The Gastroenterology practice at Boston Medical Center offers comprehensive, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services for a variety of gastroenterological disorders as well as for diseases of the liver and pancreas. Our leadership in the field, which began in the 1940s under the direction of world-renowned Gastroenterologist Franz J. Ingelfinger, continues today in clinical care, teaching and research. We work closely with BMC’s Center for Digestive Disorders which combines the expertise of gastroenterologists, gastrointestinal surgeons, oncologists, and other clinical experts to provide a multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment for a wide range of digestive disorders.
Our world-renowned physicians are at the forefront of testing emerging new technologies and pharmaceutical agents for the treatment of digestive disorders, and have made important contributions to the work of the National Institutes of Health and the United States Food and Drug Administration in this area. Drawing on both clinical experience and research, our physician-researchers publish frequently in prestigious scientific and medical journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine , the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), and

Education The University of Utah and Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center have the only accredited three-year fellowship program in Gastroenterology in the Intermountain West. Two new positions are offered each year. Approximately 500 new and return patients are seen each month and approximately 900 endoscopic procedures are performed each month. GI Fellows experience a rich training environment with rotations at the University of Utah Medical Center, Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Huntsman Cancer Hospital. All areas of GI and hepatology are provided through the fellowship program, including therapeutic endoscopy, liver transplant, motility, and endoscopic ultrasound. A GI/Hepatology multidisciplinary CME accredited conference is held each week and is open to gastroenterologists, surgeons, pathologists, and radiologists. There is also a monthly research seminar and monthly conferences in GI motility, physiology and radiology. The teaching programs are of the highest quality. The students and residents repeatedly have outstanding scores on national exams and the fellows consistently score well on subspecialty board exams. Administration Research The research interests of the Division are extensive and include: tumor biology, genetics of GI cancers, hepatitis C, mechanisms of drug-induced liver disease, chemoprevention and treatment of GI malignancies, gastrointestinal motility disorders, pulmonary complications of gastroesophageal reflux, Helicobacter pylori research, pancreatic cancer, eosinophilic esophogitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and esophageal cancer.

Welcome to the web site for the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. We hope that this site will become a beacon of information about our division to both academicians and to the general public. Over the past 12 years, we have experienced a tremendous amount of growth. During this period of time, outpatient encounters have gone from 600 per year to over 1200 per month. Research funding has grown from none in 1990 to approximately 1.5 to 1.7 million dollars per year over the last five years; these monies have come from numerous NIH grants and contracts, the Veterans Administration, and from several contracts from the pharmaceutical industry. The faculty has grown from three members in 1990 to a high of 15 in 2002, with a major recruiting effort underway to currently add an additional 4-5 faculty. This expansive growth has come with an infusion of new resources provided by the Joint Coordinating Council of Saint Louis University and Tenet Health Systems, making available approximately 2.25 million dollars for program development over these next several years.

Donate Now Spotlight Congratuations to Declan McCole, Ph.D.!!!! Dr. McCole will receive one of the first new grants under the Biomedical Research on the International Space Station (BioMed-ISS) initiative. It's a collaborative effort between NIH and NASA. Dr. McCole's research will look at excessive alcohol use, which is a leading lifestyle-relate cause of death in the US. A major factor in alcohol-related disease stems from the ability of alcohol to compromise the natural barrier function of cells in the GI tract, increasing the movement of toxins from the intestine to other organs of the body. Using microgravity 3-D cell culture models, he plans to study the barrier properties of the intestines and to explore how the absence of gravity affects alcohol's ability to diminish the barrier.
