ALEXANDRITE
Overview:
Alexandrite is used as a gemstone. Faceted Alexandrite gemstones with good color change are considered very valuable, even when visible inclusions are present. Alexandrite is the variety of chrysoberyl that displays a change-of-color from green to red. A distinct color change is the primary qualification for a chrysoberyl to be considered Alexandrite. The strength of the color change is related to the difference in the areas of transmission, relative to the absorption in the yellow. The greater the difference, the stronger the color change.
Usage: Alexandrite is said to help balance one's emotional state, to provide confidence, to increase self-esteem and to help bring about change. It is also said to bring happiness and success, and to intensify feelings of love and sensuality. Alexandrite is said to be useful to help treat pancreatic disorders, swollen lymph nodes and ailments of the spleen, as well as in the treatment of afflictions occurring with leukemia. Legend: Alexandrite was named after Prince Alexander because it was discovered in 1830 on the day of his coming of age. Russian legend has Alexandrite being discovered in the Ural Mountains in 1831. It was a favorite in Russia until the Bolshevik Revolution. In 1987, a new find of Alexandrite was made in Brazil at a locality called Hematita. The Hematita Alexandrite shows a striking and attractive color change from raspberry red to bluish green.

Gemology Glossary
Gemstone Properties:
The transparency or opacity on a mineral is referred to as its "diaphaneity," which describes the quantity of light that is able to travel through a material. The quantifying of this physical attribute can be subjective as there are several factors which can inhibit light transfer, none of which are directly related to the chemical/physical composition of the mineral itself. These factors include:
  • Thickness of the specimen
  • Presence/absence of inclusions
  • Alteration, tarnishing or weathering
It goes without saying that the thicker/larger a translucent specimen is, the more opaque it will seem. For a mineral to be considered as "transparent" it must be totally clear (not the same as colorless), with no interference in the transmission of light.
Very opaque minerals such as lapis lazuli malachite or pyrite (above, right) rarely occur in fully transparent form, but relatively opaque minerals such as Jade due exhibit translucency. Minerals such as > agate carnelian and chalcedony all appear as translucent when the specimen is cut thin enough to transmit light.

In addition to the classification of gem minerals by crystalline structure (crystal systems) and chemical composition (mineral or chemical classes), Schumann (1997) provided a commercial classification which determined the arrangement of gemstones in his book (p. 69). The categories are best known, lesser known, gemstones for collectors, rocks, and organic gemstones, and are listed below. The best known gemstones include diamond, corundum (ruby/sapphire), beryl (emerald and other varieties), chrysoberyl (alexandrite/cat's eye), spinel, topaz, garnet, zircon, tourmaline, spodumene (kunzite/hiddenite), quartz (many varieties), opal (many varieties), jade (jadeite and nephrite), peridot, zoisite (tanzanite and other varieties), hematite, pyrite (marcasite), feldspar (moonstone, sunstone, and other varieties), rhodochrosite, rhodonite, turquoise, lapis lazuli, sodalite, azurite, and malachite. Most of these gems have high hardness and/or a tough tenacity and are detailed in your textbook, Schumann (1997), on pages 70-177 in my edition. Best known multicolored sapphires from Montana

Missouri "Mozarkite" !
Mozarkite was adopted by the Missouri State Legislature as the official state rock on July 21, 1967. At the same time Galena was named the State's official mineral, the same material that Wisconsin selected. An attractive rock, Mozarkite appears in a variety of colors, most predominantly green, red or purple. The rock's beauty is enhanced by cutting and polishing into ornamental shapes for jewelry. Mozarkite is most commonly found in Benton County. Mozarkite is a form of Chert. The name is a contraction of Mo (Missouri), zark (Ozarks), and ite (meaning rock). Mozarkite consists essentially of silica with varying amounts of Chalcedony. It has won distinction as a particular form or variety of Chert because of its unique variation of colors and its ability to take a high polish. It has the hardness of 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale, which qualifies it as a suitable material for a semi-precious gemstone, Typically, the colors are different hues of red, pink, and purple with varying tints of green, gray and brown. It is collected and admired by lapidarists across the country.
Interest in collecting Mozarkite in Missouri started in the early 1950s, in Benton County. It is found primarily in west-central Missouri, south of the Missouri River, and west of the Lake of the Ozarks. Mozarkite occurs in the Cotter Dolomite of Ordovivian age, which means it is some 450 million years old. It is found in residual boulders in the soil on hill slopes, along ditches, and in roadcuts where the boulders are exposed in the soil formed by weathering of the Cotter Dolomite.
