"Equality is not just women taking on the privileges that men have, but none of the responsibilities. It’s not just women saying 'We want to fly jets and get the big salaries that come with being officers,' but not being subject to the draft the way men are. That’s not justice. That’s not equality. That’s just trading one set of privileges for another. But this other idea of gender justice, gender diplomacy, egalitarianism, balance and fairness in relationships brings about another hope. Gender Issues
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves "who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?" Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you... As we let our light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence actually liberates others. Marianne Williamson, as quoted by Nelson Mandella in a 1994 Inaugural Address. Gender
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search This article is about the distinction between male and female entities and concepts. For the use of gender in languages, see Grammatical gender . For the use of gender in hardware and electrical connectors, see Gender of connectors and fasteners . For other uses, see Gender (disambiguation) Gender is a set of characteristics that are seen to distinguish between male and female . Depending on the context, the discriminating characteristics vary from sex to social role to gender identity . In 1955, sexologist John Money introduced the terminology distinction between biological sex and gender as a role ; before his work, it was uncommon to use gender to refer to anything but grammatical categories However, Money's meaning of the word did not become widespread until the 1970s, when feminist theory embraced the distinction between biological sex and the social construct of gender. Today, the distinction is strictly followed in some contexts, like feminist literature, and in documents written by organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO)

An Educator's Guide to Gender Bias Issues
gender bias / accessibility funding hearing disability visual disability ... other disabilities Introduction: Technologies should be equally accessible to male and female students. Yet, as girls enter adolescence, large numbers of them tend to lose interest in science, math, and computer science. Girls are narrowing the gender gap in science and math, but not in technology (Closing the Gender Gap: Gender Gaps Fact Sheet, 1997). Overall girls' test scores and course enrollments have risen in these areas, with the exception of computer science. In order to attempt to address this issue, the cause of the discrepancies between males and females in computer use must be established. Several issues need to be addressed:
  • What is gender bias? What evidence is there that a technology gender gap and gender bias exist? Why are girls in their adolescent years losing interest in computers? What are the differences and similarities between how males and females perceive and use technology? What technologies are out there? For whom are they intended?

GENDER ISSUES IN JAPAN
PART ONE: THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG-DISTANCE RUNNER
(originally sent to Fukuzawa, ISSHO, and Friends Sun, 11 Oct 1998) Fellow Fukuzawans: I know there's recent stuff on the list by Richard, Joe and Olaf on Academic Apartheid that I should be dealing with, but I'm feeling a bit abstemious at the momentdue to a different essay topic burning in me. That of: MEN AND WOMEN IN JAPAN
PROLOGUE:
"Y'know, I really hate Japanese women." Thus spake my friend, a Caucasian American woman, on a hike up a Hokkaido mountain we took with the Boy Scouts some years back. I gasped incredulously and asked her why. "Because they're so competitive. I'm approaching thirty and losing all my friends. With my outdoorsy personality most of my friends are males, both Japanese and foreign, and at this age they're getting married to Japanese women. Which means that all contact gets severed. Why? Japanese wives hate their husbands hanging out with a single womanmeno matter how long we'd been friends in the past. So once they get their claws in their menpoof! I have to start all over again, finding guys who are willing to get used to my personality, without the wrong idea about my being single. "And that's getting harder and harder as I get olderfewer guys my age are single anymore. And more and more people ask when I too am going to get married these days, looking at me funny because I don't follow the established patterns of lifestyle. Sure, I've got nothing against marriage, but I don't see any prospects. Again, because of Japanese women.
