Home Library Education Encyclopedia Many benefits accrue to investments in women's schooling, which range from social payoffs (such as lower fertility rates, improved children and women's health, greater life expectancy for women and men, and higher schooling attainment by new generations) to individual improvements (such as older age at marriage, reduced teen pregnancy, greater participation and productivity into the labor force, and a greater sense of independence in economic and political decisions). For education to have a positive effect, particularly in wages, it appears that women must reach a threshold of attainment between four years of primary-level schooling and completion of primary schooling. Access to Schooling Women's access to schooling is far from equal to that of men, with considerable variation among developing regions. Official statistics for enrollment tend to underestimate the dimension of this problem; nonetheless they indicate that there are between 120 million and 150 million children ages six to eleven out of school. This group is mostly poor, and about two-thirds are girls. In South Asia, the Arab region, and sub-Saharan Africa, about 600 million boys and girls attend school, but 42 million fewer girls than boys are enrolled at the primary level and 33 million fewer at the secondary school, as reported in 1999 by Shanti Conly and Nada Chaya. Due to low access to basic education when young, twothirds of the 900 million illiterates are women. The literacy gender gap has been narrowing over time, except in South Asia.

26. The Gender Fallacy
William C Dowling of Rutgers argues that, once a poem is spoken or published, it belongs to the public and it is about the human being, not specific to the gender of the author.

The Gender Fallacy
William C. Dowling
The genetic fallacy as I want to consider it is usefully exemplified in an analysis of Eloisa to Abelard undertaken a few years ago by Ellen Pollak in a feminist study of the poetry of Pope and Swift. Eloisa to Abelard poses a genuine problem for feminist criticism precisely because Eloisa has to so many generations of readers seemed so real "as a woman." Crying out from the lonely walls of the convent to which she has been exiled by their tragic love affair, speaking to an absent and imagined Abelard with all the passion that she must have felt when she was younger and they were together, Eloisa has always been a poetic voice behind whom it has seemed difficult or, what is perhaps the same thing, irrelevant to hear the voice of an "actual" Alexander Pope. There are several logical problems here. The first is that it is hard to see how, insofar as it begins from a notion of male writers as in some necessary sense misogynist, a properly feminist interpretation of Eloisa to Abelard could come to any other conclusion. Pollak herself explicitly raises this issue as part of the question whether Pope or Swift might not, in this or that isolated instance, have registered a genuine empathy with female experience. But it is not a suggestion she wishes to entertain. Even "to argue whether or not the texts of the two poets are misogynist is," she points out, "already to entertain the possibility that they (or some of them) may not be." And, "since these texts are the products of a phallocentric culture and of its authorizing sign-systems and codes" (183), it is something like an a priori certainty that they will mirror their misogynist origins.

Most intellectuals like to find ways of joining in the struggle of the weak against the strong. So they hope that their particular gifts and competences can be made relevant to that struggle. The term most frequently used in recent decades to formulate this hope is "critique of ideology." The idea is that philosophers, literary critics, lawyers, historians, and others who are good at making distinctions, redescribing, and recontextualizing can put these talents to use by "exposing" or "demystifying" present social practices. But the most efficient way to expose or demystify an existing practice would seem to be by suggesting an alternative practice, rather than criticizing the current one. In politics, as in the Kuhnian model of theory-change in the sciences, anomalies within old paradigms can pile up indefinitely without providing much basis for criticism until a new option is offered. "Immanent" criticism of the old paradigm is relatively ineffective. More specifically, the most effective way to criticize current descriptions of a given instance of the oppression of the weak as "a necessary evil" (the political equivalent of "a negligible anomaly") is to explain just why it is not in fact necessary, by explaining how a specific institutional change would eliminate it. That means sketching an alternative future and a scenario of political action that might take us from the present to that future.

Gender Issues
"Because with boys failure is attributed to external factors and success is attributed to ability, they keep their confidence, even with failure. With girls it's just the opposite. Because their success is attributed to good luck or hard work and failure to lack of ability, with every failure, girls' confidence is eroded. All this works in subtle ways to stop girls from wanting to be astronauts and brain surgeons. Girls can't say why they ditch their dreams, they just "mysteriously" lose interest." Mary Pipher

Hilary M. Lips For the last several years, I have been asking, mostly through questionnaires, but also in some interviews, university students about their views of powerful people and of potentially being powerful themselves. Here is a list of what one group of Radford University students said when I asked them to imagine who they would be as powerful persons. [OVERHEAD: LIST OF POWERFUL PERSONS, USA].
Obviously, these students have no shortage of ambition, but are there differences in the visions of the women and the men? No man expects to marry power. No woman expects to get it through sports. The women may seem to be more helpful or people-oriented in their visions, perhaps? If so, it is not an overwhelming impression. The differences between the responses of women and men are not dramatic. However, I find that when I read further, or when I have interviewed my respondents, careful reading/listening to what the women say suggests that they have not actually made their peace with the idea of power, that they feel a great deal of ambivalence about powerful women in general and themselves as potentially powerful women in particular. Before looking further at what they say, let us take some time to look at the possible sources of this ambivalence.

Gender Issues in Performance Evaluation
By Shane Dayton eHow Contributor updated: October 30, 2010 I want to do this! What's This?
  • Alistair Berg/Digital Vision/Getty Images Many issues exist when it comes to performance evaluations. Many employees and employers alike look at performance evaluations as a necessary evil. While the point of any performance evaluation is to give a fair and accurate picture of how individual employees have performed, these evaluations sometimes have a reputation for having gender issues. Gender bias can especially exist in companies or industries typically dominated by one gender.
  • Gender of Rater
  • One gender issue that sometimes arises during performance evaluations is the gender of the rater. Sociological studies show that people often subconsciously prefer what they're most familiar with, and that means the gender of a rater often creates a subconscious tendency to rate employees of the same gender higher than individuals who are of the opposite gender. Many companies have training to point this out, hoping recognizing this issue can prevent it.
  • Built-in Bias
  • Some performance evaluations suffer from a built-in gender bias. This often is an issue with old evaluations that were made decades ago when gender bias was not considered a major

What kind of mother are you?
Marketing mavens dissect moms for eager advertisers.
By Lisa Moskowitz A ccording to Sales and Marketing Management magazine, women in the United States control 80 percent of all household buying decisions. In the category of single-parent households headed by mothers, the percentage is even higher. These are heady numbers, the kind that drive advertisers to probe, speculate and scramble to find images that will compel women to buy lots of stuff. Traditionally, advertising geared toward mothers has been watered down to appeal to broad marketing stereotypes such as "Supermoms" or "Happy Homemakers." As established categories readily accepted in consumer circles, they were easy to keep using until recently. Motherhood is now being acknowledged as a package that requires more diverse wrapping than the history of advertising might suggest, according to Denise Fedewa, a vice president and planning director at Leo Burnett, one of the world's largest advertising firms. As part of LeoShe, a team at Leo Burnett that profiles women to find out what kind of marketing messages prompt them to get out their wallets, Fedewa says that mothers, like any other consumer group, are now defined not just by motherhood, but by income, age, upbringing, employment and marital status.
