Paternal DNA Ancestors
Men have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome (the Y making them male). While women have two X chromosomes and no Y. It is the Y that is passed from father to son, to son, to son, etc.
So, by looking at your Y chromosome type and comparing it to Y chromosomes types found all over the world and in all the different races, we can evaluate where your great paternal ancestors originated from and where they are distributed in the world today.
Because this test uses the Y chromosome, only men can have this test. A woman wanting to trace her fathers genetic ancestry could gain this information by using a sample from her fathers close relative ie brother, son etc.
The DNA Father wallchart portrays the story of your ancient ancestors, based on scientific analysis of DNA you inherited from your father. It traces your genetic line back to the beginnings of humanity in Africa and follows your ancestors' progress over tens of thousands of years as the human race gradually peopled our planet. A map showing the particular route your own ancestors took during these epic migrations illustrates their story.
The wall chart also identifies the genes that distinguish your own genetic line and shows how your ancestors' story fits into the vast family tree that unites the human race.

Lawless Gene-Testing Industry Needs a Sheriff
By Brandon Keim Editor's note: This story has been updated. Think twice before you act on the recommendations of a genetic test. That's the warning from genetic-industry watchdogs, who note that there's no independent oversight of the fast-growing DNA testing industry. As a result, advice given by these tests for instance, on what drugs might be beneficial to you based on your genetic profile does not necessarily have a sound scientific basis. "Testing has a place in this society but oversight needs to catch up so that the public doesn't get misinformed," said Sara Katsanis , an analyst at the Genetics and Public Policy Center at Johns Hopkins University. In an article published today in Science , Katsanis and her colleagues describe a burgeoning industry flying under the regulatory radar, sending customers down paths blazed as much by marketing as science. More than 1,000 genetic tests are now available, many promising to help people pick drugs and dosages. In a few cases, as with the blood-thinning drug Coumadin and certain breast cancer treatments, the tests have proved useful. But experts say these are the exception rather than the rule: Data on other gene-drug interactions remains limited.

An Icelandic company named deCode Genetics discovered the gene. DNA Direct has a contractual relationship with deCode.
The test works, so it passed my beta test. You might say, however, that I failed it, because the test show that I am genetically at risk of having diabetes by carrying two copies of the variant.
If I were planning on raising a family, this knowledge would be even more important. If I were married and if my wife also tested positive for the diabetes gene, we might think twice about having children. When both parents have two copies each of diabetes gene, their children are at a greater risk than when one parent has it.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Genetic Mutation
Testing Service for Cats
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common form of heart disease in the cat. In many breeds it is an inherited disease. Our laboratory has identified two mutations responsible for the gene in some cats. One genetic mutation is found predominantly in Maine Coon cats and the second genetic mutation is found predominantly in Ragdoll cats.
It should be noted that in human beings with the same disease, there are many different genetic mutations which can cause this disease. It is likely the same in the cat but additional mutations have not yet been defined. Very importantly, the absence of the mutation in a cat DOES NOT mean that it will never develop the disease. It means that it does not have the only known mutation that can cause the disease in the cat at this time. In the future, additional mutations may be identified that may be tested for as well. Our laboratory offers two different genetic tests. One test is for the mutation predominantly found in Maine Coons. The other test is for the mutation predominantly found in Ragdolls. Please be certain to mark the submission form to designate which test you choose. Test your cat
