Write down the names of all older relatives who are still left in the family; such relatives can be a mine of information.
They may have birth, marriage and death certificates, in which case, borrowing copies of these will save you time and money.
Perhaps they will also have family bibles containing family history information going back many years, or photo albums or other documents that could help.

Getting Started Before you can begin your search in the archives of the Czech Republic, it's necessary to have, at the very least, the name of your Czech ancestor and the name of the village where they lived prior to emigrating. If your ancestors hailed from Prague or one of the larger cities, an exact address will greatly increase your chances of finding your Czech roots. Any additional data, such as date of birth, will also be very helpful. Ship passenger lists often list the village where the people lived prior to embarkation. They're an important resource for locating your ancestor's origins. Leo Baca's Czech Passenger Lists If your ancestor is not listed in Leo Baca's Czech Passenger Lists, you will need to do a lot more leg work to track down your ancestor's passenger records. Arnie Lang's is a good place to start your search for these records. The Ellis Island web site is another fantastic resource for finding your ancestors' passenger records. The center's free database contains records for over 22 million passengers arriving in America between 1892 and 1924. High-quality scans of the passenger records can also be downloaded from this site. A high percentage of the records in the Ellis Island database contain major spelling errors the vast majority of these appear to be transcriptional errors from when the data was entered into the computer. If the person transcribing the passenger record misspelled your ancestor's name, it can be very difficult to locate the person for whom you're searching. In this case, the

Ann Sharp originally posted this letter to Roots-L, a genealogy based e-mail service, on November 22, 1995, in answer to someone who inquired about how to get started on the road to genealogy. Wish I had this when I first started.
Here's how you start. You need: a three ring notebook to keep your charts and notes together, and a suitable place to store certificates, documents, and xerox pages.
If you are a beginner, start with yourself, then work outwards from what you do know to what you don't. To begin, your object is to find the information to fill out a four generation pedigree chart; from you to all your great grandparents.
If your grandparents, like mine, were born before birth certificates, ask what they used instead. People in defense jobs during World War II produced birth information for security investigations, so you may find photocopies of family Bible entries, "delayed registrations," affidavits to establish identity, christening records, and so on.
To record your findings, you will need two kinds of charts: Pedigree charts and family group sheets instantly clarify the identities and relationships of three James Smiths. You can either draw your own and xerox them, or buy from a genealogy supply outlet. If you draw your own, leave space to

Essentials Genealogy Getting Started FamilyTree Crafts Hobbies
Since genealogy is my hobby, my profession, and my passion, many people ask me how to get started. What are the essentials to doing a family search Here are some tips that should help you discover your family under the best possible conditions.
Get organized: I started working on my family tree almost 30 years ago by writing down names on a brown paper bag. Now there are 20,000 people in my tree about 3,000 proven to my satisfaction. Your tree may not grow that large, but organization is important regardless.
  • Papers: I suggest that you get a three-ring binder with tabbed dividers to hold documents that you find. It doesn't have to be fancy, but you can add binders when one is no longer adequate. If you are like me, you may have to graduate to file cabinets later.
Software: You really must have some sort of electronic filing system as well. There are a number of good software packages available at very competitive prices and some for free. There are good choices for both Macintosh and PC type computers. Just be sure that the software you pick includes these features . . .
    • Gedcom file compatibility: Gedcom is a standard file format used by all genealogy programs and you can tell one of these files by the .ged extension associated with the file. If you get lucky and find a relative who has already done the work, you will want to import their data into your computer. For that reason, your software must be able to handle it.
