Mississippi State University, founded in 1878, is a land-grant and sea-grant institution, a Carnegie Doctoral/Research-Extensive institution, and the largest university in Mississippi. The university adjoins the city of Starkville, with a population of about 22,000. MSU enrolls approximately 16,000 students, 20 percent of whom are graduate students; has about 1,000 faculty members and approximately 4,000 total full-time employees; has a total operating budget of more than $515 million; and has annual research expenditures of about $160 million. The university offers 181 bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees in 94 academic programs through colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Architecture, Business and Industry, Education, Engineering, Forest Resources, and Veterinary Medicine. The academic calendar is based on fall and spring semesters and a 10-week summer term. MSU is a member of the Southeastern Conference for intercollegiate athletics, offering six intercollegiate sports for men and eight for women. Approximately 25 percent of students live on campus, and a free shuttle bus system carries about 3,000 riders daily over four campus routes. The nearly 300 campus student organizations include 29 social fraternities and sororities, Army and Air Force ROTC, and a variety of intramural and club sports. The campus and adjacent agricultural research lands comprise about 4,000 acres.

You say genomics, I say genetics...
Ricki Lewis Training as a geneticist or genomicist today involves mastering a lot more than the mendelian ratios, central dogma and population equations of times past. Not only has the conceptual focus shifted from genes to genomes, but that change has added the new realm of bioinformatics. As a result, today's genetic scientists have skill sets that dwarf those of their mentors. "Back in my day, the ability to manipulate a large amount of data was only for population geneticists. No longer. Molecular geneticists do this today too," says Joann Boughman, executive vice-president of the American Society of Human Genetics in Bethesda, Maryland. Over the past few years, familiarity with, if not expertise in, bioinformatics has become not just desirable, but expected. "Classical and molecular genetics are still part of the training, but it is hard to believe that anyone with a PhD in genetics nowadays would not also have a background in bioinformatics," says Richard Gregory, director of research at Genzyme in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After half a century of single-gene quests, the ability to sequence genomes has reframed research in the much broader context of gene interactions. But the distinction between geneticist and genomicist remains fuzzy and perhaps artificial, for the two titles represent a continuum that differs more in scope than skills. "I think of genetics as disease-gene hunts," says Claire Fraser, president and director of The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) in Rockville, Maryland. "That's never been what we do at TIGR. We look at whole genomes and do comparative analyses." Since TIGR's debut in 1992, researchers there have sequenced the genomes of more than 200 species.

    Careers in Animal Genetics
The birds and the bees aren’t quite what they used to be. Increased scientific intervention in animal reproduction poses many social and ethical questions.
    What are Genetics?
Genetics are about the study of inherited DNA, an identification pattern unique to each individual. Genes are passed on from parents to offspring (heredity) and determine factors such as colouring patterns, fertility and reproductive genes, but they also pass on inherited diseases and disorders. Genetic engineering involves making changes to the DNA of a cell for the improvement of plants and animals bred by man.
    Why Mess with Nature?
The science of animal genetics is not new, it started in the 1800s during the agricultural revolution! Cross-breeding (within the same species) to improve milk yield in dairy cattle, ovulation rates in poultry; both are examples of manipulating animal genetics. Studies provide genetic information about animals, not only so they may be improved upon to meet market demands, but also to aid the conservation of genes and investigate the genetic components of farm animal diseases like foot and mouth. Here in the UK, for example, we have around 130 rare native breeds of farm animals, the majority of which are endangered species. Animal genetics is not necessarily about creating monsters, it can be used to preserve the integrity of breeds that may otherwise face extinction.

The Future of GeneticsCareer Opportunities for Young Scientists
By Elisabeth Pain September 29, 2006 Scientists prepared to deal with a wide range of topics and to help translate findings from the laboratory to the clinic hold the future of research on human genetics and disease in their hands. C ompleted in 2003 after a 13-year international effort, the Human Genome Project placed the 25,000 or so genes that constitute the human genome within easy reach of researchers. But the accomplishments of the project extend beyond genetic data: The Human Genome Project also pushed forward the technology we need to look deep into our genes. Still, although recording all those genetic letters and developing the tools to search and sort them are breakthroughs of historic importance, those genetic blueprints have little value unless we can read them. The challenge scientists now face has shifted from acquiring data to understanding how genetic information governs the structure and function of cells and whole organisms.
