The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) is the hub of the Human Genome Project and one of the 24 institutes that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the largest biomedical research facility in the world. For accurate information about all aspects of the Human Genome Project and a wealth of carefully compiled resources, including a glossary of genetic terms and an extensive guide to other genome-related Web sites, visit the NHGRI site.
Glossary of Genetic Terms
http://www.genome.gov/10002096

Have you ever wished your dictionary could speak to you? The NHGRI's genome glossary offers a definition for almost any genetic term you can think of, provides a clear illustration of the term, invites you to explore related terms, and - ta da! - you can hear each term explained aloud by a specialist in the field of genetics.

Our lab is interested in growth control and morphogenesis in zebrafish development. Thus, we study the pigment pattern and the control of size and regeneration of the fin. Our basic approach is to identify mutations that affect adult pigment stripe pattern or fin growth and regeneration and analyze the mutations in singly or multiply mutant fish to identify the tissues and genetic pathways affected. Additionally, we are trying to identify the genes affected by the mutations, and are working to develop genetic and physical maps that will lead to isolation of these genes
Research Interests
Melanocyte stem cells
Between 2 and 4 weeks of development the embryonic pigment pattern is replaced by the adult pigment pattern. Analysis of mutations indicates that the melanocytes of the adult pigment pattern develop from multiple populations of undifferentiated precursors or stem cells that are presumably derived from the embryonic neural crest. Adult melanocyte stem cells are activated to develop at distinct stages of development, as the animal grows, or in regenerating fins following amputation. We are now working to identify the different populations of stem cell in the adult tissue.
Proportionate growth
Zebrafish grow throughout their lives, slowing the rate of growth after reaching maturity. The rates of growth of the fins and the body are regulated to achieve constant proportion of fin length to body length at all stages. From phenotypes of mutations that affect fin size, we infer that the long fin mutation relieves the coupling between fin growth and body growth, and the short fin mutation retains coupled growth, but changes the proportionality constant. Identifying the affected genes by positional cloning or candidate gene approaches will shed light on the mechanisms that impose proportionate growth on the different tissues and organs of vertebrate animals.

    Influenza Genome Resources
There are a number of resources that provide information about influenza, but perhaps the most useful is the Influenza Virus Resource from the National Center for Biotechnology Information . This website gathers Influenza sequences from the NIAID Influenza Genome Sequencing Projects, and provides access to the data free-of-charge, as well as useful tools for both annotation and analysis of the seqences. Furthermore, you can easily access good information about Influenza viruses, as well as links to other Influenza sequence databases. Another useful resource is the Fluwiki . This site also brings together many different resources (with links), as well as providing information on Influenza virus and pandemics. The National Instutitue of Allergy and Infectious Diseases ( NIAID ) also has a good website on Influenza virus, both for lay people and for reserachers.

    Human Ageing Genomic Resources
The Human Ageing Genomic Resources (HAGR) is a collection of databases and tools designed to help researchers study the biology and genetics of human ageing using a variety of genomic approaches. GenAge Database of Ageing Genes A major resource in HAGR is GenAge , which includes a curated database of genes related to human ageing and a database of ageing- and longevity-associated genes in model organisms AnAge Database of Animal Ageing and Longevity Another major database in HAGR is AnAge . Featuring over 4,000 species, AnAge provides a compilation of data on ageing, longevity, and life history that is ideal for the comparative biology of ageing. Other Datasets, Tools and Projects Other projects we are involved in include evolutionary studies genome sequencing , and gene expression analyses . The latter allowed us to identify a set of genes commonly altered during mammalian ageing which represents a conserved molecular signature of ageing In addition to developing datasets and performing numerous analyses we develop computational tools and software , including a Perl toolkit entitled the Ageing Research Computational Tools (ARCT) , and a method to calculate the rate of ageing of a given population based on demographic parameters If you are interested in the genomics of ageing, please spare a moment to read our
