    History
The Monastery of Christ in the Desert, Abiquiu, New Mexico, U.S.A., was founded in 1964 by Fr. Aelred Wall, OSB, with monks of Mount Saviour Monastery in New York state. In 1983 the Monastery of Christ in the Desert was received into the English Province of the Subiaco Congregation as a Conventual Priory and in 1996 became an autonomous abbey. From its beginning the monastery has followed the Benedictine life with no external apostolates, but maintains a guesthouse for private retreats where men and women can share the Divine Office and Mass in the abbey church with the monks. Besides maintaining the guesthouse, the monks engage in agriculture, craft, maintenance and computer work at the monastery. A gift shop is also part of the monastery's income, which includes a mail-order department of books and other religious items in the gift shop.
Christ in the Desert has two dependent monasteries in Mexico: La Soledad, near San Miguel de Allende, and St. Mary and All the Saints, in Xalapa, as well as a dependent monastery in the USA, Holy Cross, in Chicago. All of these monasteries likewise observe the Benedictine life without apostolates other than a guesthouse.

DOD, Defense Visual Information Center, March Air Force Base, CA Location, location, location The Middle East is at the junction of trade routes connecting Europe and China, India and Africa, and all the cultures of the Mediterranean basin. Many of these routes have been documented from as early as 5,000 years ago, and the presence of so many different people and products over the years has had a profound effect on the region's culture, politics, and economy.
More than deserts and camels The landscape of the Middle East is more diverse than the deserts that dominate movie screens and novels would suggest. Rivers allowing for productive agriculture were the key factor in the settling of cities. Mountain ranges kept cultures in separate areas, providing natural barriers to imperialist agendas. Thank You
April 1994 - July, 2005 The Ancient World Web is now closed. Thank you to the people who contributed links, fixes, updates, technology suggestions, and to those who used (and loved) the site over the past eleven years. I've appreciated it very much, and enjoyed getting to know you. I'd like to send a special shout-out to Dawn Kirkland - the first person to stumble across the list of bookmarks I put on my website for my own convenience, and the first person to suggest a link I hadn't seen before. Shuttering the Ancient World Web was a difficult and sad decision for me. As the demands of the site have increased with its age and size, I simply haven't been able to keep up. I've been ignoring all of my other web projects to try and catch up over the past few months, but I find myself behind again before I even finish the maintenance routine. (That routine includes: hand-verifying links (to track down sites that have turned to porn, or are no longer what they once were), fighting hackers and spam, digging through the suggested links (98% of which are inappropriate), rooting out fraud (people will try all sorts of things to improve their ratings or site hit counts), and trying to keep abreast of the latest news and information to figure out what new sites to add.) I now need to dedicate that time to finding a new job (my current contract is up in October, and I'm looking for interesting, challenging UI work), finishing some key projects, and the assorted minutiae of life.

delete Mount Pelion is straddling an inverted L-shaped peninsula whose length runs from north to south along the Aegean coastline of the Prefecture of Magnesia , which is located in the plain of Thessaly right in the heartland of Greece . The base of the peninsula turns in a right angle due west to embrace the Pagasitikos Gulf . Due to the fact that the mountain runs all along the peninsula, the term Pelion is also used for the peninsula itself. The north to south axis has a length of approximately 45 klm while the west to east axis ranges between 25 and 10 klm
The main bulk of the mountain is in the north. Both the eastern and the western slopes are quite steep and as the highest peak is at an altitude of 1624 meters 5354 feet Pelion looks as if it is a great natural fortress rising straight to the sky. Toward the south the peaks lose height and the slopes become gentler. The awesome gorges, deep ravines and hidden valleys of the north give place to rolling hills and fairly low land that will soon start rising to a respectable yet not forbidding height as the traveller reaches the tip of the peninsula.
