OneGeology is a project that uniquely mobilises geological surveys around the world, as part of an ongoing IYPE2008 contribution, to act as the drivers and sustainable data providers of a global geological map dataset. This project is not only making geological map data more easily accessible it is also using this geoscientist-friendly vehicle of creating a tangible geological map to accelerate progress of an emerging global geoscience data model and interchange standard and take forward interoperability. Last but certainly not least it is exchanging information and transferring know-how between developed and developing countries around the world and at the same time making accessible geoscience maps and data that can attract interest and investment. The Brighton "Accord" agreed in March 2007 kicked off "OneGeology", and the initiative now has the support of 78 nations and geological surveys. The geological map data is being made available as a distributed web service, using the latest web map and web feature service approaches. Geological Surveys are dynamically 'serving' the data for their territories to a web portal. OneGeology is accelerating the global introduction of the foundation technologies necessary for dynamic interchange of geoscience data and is facilitating real time access to the latest version of information and knowledge from the geological surveys of the world.

Geological Surveys p p For instance, the Soviet Union helped Algeria to set up the Central Combined Research Laboratory for the Survey and Development of Oil and Gas Deposits with the latest equipment at its disposal. When in I960 Algeria nationalised the mining industry and foreign specialists began leaving the country, Soviet geologists helped it to set up the National Society for Prospecting and Exploiting Minerals (SONAREM). Later the Algerian Government set up a Central Geological Base with chemical, spectral and mineral and petrographic laboratories outfitted with Soviet equipment. p The Central Mineral Raw Materials Laboratory in Egypt is also outfitted with Soviet equipment. On top of that, Soviet organisations supplied Egypt with 20 mobile laboratories for analysing and taking samples of raw materials in the field. p In Guinea geological surveys were made solely by foreigners in the first years of its independent development. Since the establishment of Soviet-Guinean cooperation a polytechnical institute was founded in the country. Since that time Guineans have gained experience in geological surveying. In 1971 the Guinean National Geological Organisation assumed responsibility for prospecting for mineral resources. At the same time Soviet organisations continue actively to assist the Republic in this sphere, and among other things helped in the establishment of the Central Geological Laboratory.

Home Library US History Encyclopedia From 1824 until about 1860, state geological surveys contributed significantly to the development of the economic and intellectual life of the American states. Even at the time they were made, these surveys were regarded as part of the nationwide campaign for internal improvements, and they were closely related to the transportation revolution. The reports of geological surveys influenced the routes of roads, canals, and railroads by describing natural features that assisted or hampered construction and by indicating valuable mineral deposits to which transportation lines could be run in anticipation of profitable business. In turn, railways and canals created cross sections of rocks for geologists to study and provided easier access to all corners of the states. Construction engineers were often hired as state geologists (and vice versa), and there was an easy two-way flow of information about topography and geological formations between engineers and state scientists.

Bedrock and mineral deposits in the Bergslagen region
The Bergslagen region in south-central Sweden forms one of Europe's important provinces for the exploitation of metallic mineral deposits. The synthesis of the bedrock geology in this region, presented by SGU in the report 'Synthesis of the bedrock geology in the Bergslagen region, Fennoscandian Shield, south-central Sweden' (Ba 58), complements the regional geophysical and geological maps that were published by SGU during 2002 and 2007, respectively. Geological Surveys
A geological survey is the term used to describe a number of tests that are taken out by geologists on a specific area of ground. The survey here is designed to map out the geological formation and characteristics of the area in question.
Geological surveys have a variety of purposes. They can, for example, tell us what kind of structure or formation the land has and they can identify areas such as natural resources and so on. These kinds of geological surveys are also used to build up in depth geographical models and maps that give us a better understanding of the land that we live in.
A geologist that is carrying out a geological survey will use a variety of methods to complete his/her task. They will, for example, carry out what is often termed a 'walk over' survey where they will assess the land from a surface and visual perspective to see what they can find. They can also use a variety of other methods to assess what is going on underneath the ground such as sinking holes and utilising remote sensing technologies. Other technologies that can also be used here include satellite images and aerial photography.
The term geological survey can also be used to describe a national institution that is responsible for managing the geology of an area/country. The organisation that does this in the UK, for example, is called the British Geological Survey.
