    Introduction
This page is a guide to geological surveys in the David Wilson Library , University of Leicester. Different surveys are available for different parts of the world within the Library's collections. There are some differences in the referencing style, formats and locations. For further details see the various sections on this page.
    British Geological Surveys
All of the British Geological Surveys (BGS) held by the Library are kept on Floor 1 at Geological Surveys 553-554.3 They are divided into sections as follows:
    • Geo/Sur 554.2 - 554.236 Geological Surveys covering Scotland - Geo/Sur 554.13 - 554.131 Geological Surveys covering Ireland - Geo/Sur 554.15 Geological Surveys covering Northern Ireland - Geo/Sur 554.16
Within these sections the BGS are then usually arranged alphabetically according to place name.

Geological Surveys Before the Civil War
Figure 1. Gentlemen engaged in geological pursuits, 1836. In 1824, as the number and scope of internal improvements increased, Federal policy was changed as a matter of practical necessity. Congress authorized the Army Engineers to make engineering surveys to prepare estimates for roads and canals for national military, commercial, or postal purposes. Science in general, and geology in particular, however, remained almost exclusively the province of the States or private individuals for another decade. Olmsted's first report, published in 1824, provided the inspiration for establishment of geological surveys on another basis. Olmsted devoted several pages of his report to the gold mines of North Carolina and in 1825 published a paper on the gold deposits in Silliman's American Journal of Science and Arts. Gold-bearing rock in place was discovered in North Carolina that very year and later in Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia as well. The more practical-minded geologists seized upon the gold discoveries in the Southeastern States as a better means of promoting the establishment of geological surveys than either the improvement of agriculture or the need for internal improvements. During the early 1830's, several of the Eastern and Central States established State surveys "to examine the geological structure, mineral resources, and products" of their part of the national domain.

Using Aircraft for Geological Surveys Geology has a great role in the determination of relevant information for the existence of earth and living beings in it. Geologists perform various studies and research for locating materials below the earths surface. They have a crucial role in finding out the presence of oil and other valuable resources in the underground of earth. Geology uses aircrafts at various stages of these surveys. The shots obtained from aircrafts are used for geological surveys. Aircraft are used to take photographs of earth and its surface. Some detailed shots are taken which are capable of exploring the underground of earth up to around hundreds of meters. Such aerial and satellite shots are highly informational for the determination of the presence of oil there. For the survey of lakes, geophysics department mainly relies on aircrafts. They generally use winged aircrafts and helicopters for detecting and conducting surveys.

Geological surveys
A geological survey is an important part of every archaeological field report. The requirements of this part of the fieldwork or desk-based assessment will vary for each project. Even a full study of the geological background is by far the cheapest element of the field research and could save time and effort later in the project - and hence reduce costs overall. By determining essential information on landscape, sediment and preservation potential amongst many other factors, the archaeological team are assisted by a well informed geological background. The full potential of the site may include information from the following list: geological overview as a basis for understanding the site - with or without a map or cross-section water resources (past, present or future)

Geological Surveys
Geological surveys are designed to enable the mapping of underlying geology, mineral deposits and water resources. This information is used to inform quarrying, mineral extraction, hydrogeological projects and to aid geotechnical engineering. We have over 25 years experience in carrying out projects in Ireland and overseas using a range of geophysical techniques to aid all your project requirements. A combined gravity and gamma-ray spectrometer survey Typically geological assessments include desk-based research, reporting on the sediments and bedrock underlying a particular area, mapping outcrop and assessment of the geological conditions in a survey area. Geophysical surveys provide a platform to gain this information without the need for soil or rock disturbance. Traditional methods include Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES), Electrical Resistivity Tomography and Ground Penetrating Radar although other methodologies can also be used enabling a complete assessment to be gained of the geological conditions relating to a site. Earthsound Associates expertise in a wide range of different survey types also allows the intergration of archaeological assessments into the geological surveys, often important when developing quarrying or mineral extraction projects.
