USGS Education
The USGS and Science Education
The U.S. Geological Survey provides scientific information intended to help educate the public about natural resources, natural hazards, geospatial data, and issues that affect our quality of life. Discover selected online resources, including lessons, data, maps, and more, to support teaching, learning, education (K-12), and university-level inquiry and research. What's New, What's Happening Educational Resources Of Special Interest Featured Topic The Great Missoula Floods : A Journey Through the Landscape of Earth's Greatest Floods 12,000 years ago, glacial Lake Missoula (the size of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario combined) burst through its ice dam and exploded downstream. This towering mass of water and ice shook the ground as it thundered towards the Pacific Ocean, stripping away soils and cutting deep canyons in the bedrock. With flood waters roaring across the landscape at 65 miles per hour, the lake would have drained in as little as 48 hours. Learn about the Lake Missoula floods in a one-hour public lecture by USGS geologist Richard Waitt. Find more information at the USGS Glacial Lake Missoula Web site
