http://www.hydroexplore.com/geology.htm
S S Exploration welcomes you to the geological world of India. The study of geology is of paramount importance for the exploration and allied activities in the field of ground water. We have tried to show a brief picture of Geology of India below for you. The general geological information is useful from Ground water point of view. However, for detailed analysis and understanding we request you to mail us at info@hydroexplore.com
Geology of India is as diverse as its geography and people. It contains rocks covering almost the entire spectrum of the Geological Time Scale. It has rocks severely deformed and metamorphosed as well as recently deposited alluvium which are yet to experience diagenesis. Even the fossil record is extremely diverse and includes the earliest stromatolites, invertebrates, vertebrates and plant fossils. Rock type and mineral deposits of many varieties can be found in this country. Legend Recent- Quaternary Tertiary Paleocene- Cretaceous Mesozoic Gondwana Early Palaeozoic

GENERAL GEOLOGY OF DULUTH
A variety of rocks are exposed in the Duluth area. They range in age from the 1.8 to 1.9 billion old Thomson Formation to the 800 m.y. old sedimentary rocks of the Fond du Lac Formation . Volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the North Shore Volcanic Group were formed from the Mid-Continental Rift system about 1.1 billion years ago. The main groups of rocks in Northern Minnesota include:
1. The Thomson Formation, which is exposed at Thomson Dam in Carleton County, Minnesota
2) North Shore Volcanic Group overlays the Thomson Formation and is exposed from Duluth at Ely's Peak, north to Grand Portage.
Duluth Complex
intrudes the North Shore Volcanic Group and is exposed from Duluth at Bardon Peak north to Grand Marais and as far west as Babbitt forming a crescent shaped body.
4) Sedimentary basin infill of the Fond du Lac formation exposed at Fond du Lac in the vicinity of Mission Creek. The Keweenawan (upper Precambrian) lavas in the Superior region were deposited at different times in overlapping accumulation. There are 100's of lava flows. The North Shore Volcanic Group is 6000-9000 meters thick ( Picture 3 ). The lowest (oldest) basalts are exposed at two ends. One is near Duluth and the other is near Grand Portage (

The rake was developed to obtain a greater number of small rock samples than could be obtained using the tongs (AS-17-134-20425). Note the sample bags attached to the PLSS of the crewman. Since he could not reach his own sample bags, each crewman had to place samples in the other persons sample bags. See also the rake and scoop mounted on pallet at the rear of the LRV.
This view from Apollo 12 shows the hand tool carrier and a core tube, attached to the extension handle, being emplaced into the soil (AS-12-49-7243). Numbered sample bags are held in the hand tool carrier. Additional core tubes are visible in the carrier. This towering mass of water and ice shook the ground as it thundered towards the Pacific Ocean, stripping away soils and cutting deep canyons in the bedrock. With flood waters roaring across the landscape at 65 miles per hour, the lake would have drained in as little as 48 hours. Facts about Quicksand
This is from the document
'/news-archives/sci/geo/geology/general'.
contributed by: ert@gly.bris.ac.uk (Reggie) Quicksand is a a condition which occurs when an otherwise static body of sand is "aggitated" in such a way that the grains lift away from one another. As friction is transferred through the sand body via grain-to-grain contacts the separation of grainscauses a dramatic reduction in the shear strength of the material and it starts to behave in a liquid-like manner, i.e. the sediment liquifies. There are a number of "aggitation" processes:
  • The upward passage of pore fluid exerts a drag force on the individual grains. If the drag force is great enough it will balance the weight of the grains and they will no longer rest on their neighbours. This processes is often called "fluidisation". Vibrations cause grains to move laterally, colliding with their neighbours as they do so. If the vibration energy is great enough the collision rate and grain velocities increase such that the majority of grains are moving and colliding rather than resting statically on their neighbours. The sediment then becomes liquified. During earthquakes and other large vibration activity (e.g. storm waves, impact of dense flows, etc.) vibration can causes an initial movement of grains, compaction and pore waters are expelled. The action of the expelled water is combined with the vibration behaviour to produce a complicated liquification process which is often called "liquefaction".
