Rivers are affected by the geology and topography of the areas they flow through, because the slope of the land and the soil and rocks determine how fast water flows, how much of it soaks into the ground, how much runs into river and stream channels, and how quickly the rocks and soil erode. The eroded soil and rock are carried downstream until they settle out in a calm stretch of the river or until they reach the ocean. Water which soaks into the ground enters the groundwater system, and may help recharge one of the aquifers underlie the surface soil.

How may we assist you?
Since commencing operations in April 2001 we have investigated more than 500 projects throughout the 'top-of-the-South' Island. With combined geotechnical experience of more than 40 years we bring broad local, regional and international experience to all projects – large and small.
Our geo-referenced site plans provide clear, accurate and transferable data in the preferred GIS platform adopted by the authorities we deal with. Data for these site plans are seamlessly compiled in a geodatabase (see Project Index map below).
WE CAN HELP IF:
  • You require a thorough, considered review of all your geotechnical options. You expect upfront appraisals of geotechnical costs for your project, avoiding unanticipated β€œadd-on” costs. You want to get it right the first time.

Careers: Geology - general
Expert: Keith Patton Question I am currently attending a university and I am having a problem finding my exact interest or major. I like the study of the earth whether it be the oceans, land, or atmosphere but I am looking for something that is needed. There are counselors here at my school but they just don't have the answers I am looking for. Do you have any suggestions? Answer Thomas: Your question is a bit general. There are lots of specialty areas in the geosciences, but they require a lot of math and science (up to calculous and physics) and then to get a decent job you need a Masters degree (something the pukes at the university departments fail to tell you out of: 1) ignorance 2) disregard for the students in their zeal to fill undergraduate seats so the professors can get paid 3) being out of touch with reality since most of them have never had a real job but left school only to go directly into teaching.)
