Virginia Geology Rocks exposed in the Commonwealth of Virginia record the advance of ancient shorelines, the collision of continents, the tracks of long-extinct dinosaurs, and over one billion years of geologic history. Virginia has a diverse landscape that extends from the high rocky summits in the Blue Ridge Mountains to low-lying barrier islands exposed to the Atlantic Ocean. five provinces Term Definition Section , the Rock Cycle , and Geologic Time Table , to familiarize yourself with some of the terminology used.

Geology - Historical Flooding of Afar Triangle, Africa
Expert: Keith Patton Question I am doing a little personal research on human evolution and have read interesting but indirect evidence that the Afar Triangle region of Africa (the north end of the Great Rift Valley) was undoubtedly inundated by sea water at some point, causing huge salt deposits which are still being mined. Can you point me to some hard data or research on the dates this flooding might have happened, and for how long, so I can try to correlate it with key periods in hominid evolution? Many thanks. Answer I see that it is a Tertiary-Quaternary rift system going back 58 million years. The various epochs and their ages can be found here:

Course Context
This is an introductory-level historical geology course with no prerequisites. The course is four credit hours with two one-hour lectures and one one-hour seminar each week. Students are expected to spend approximately two hours per week in an "open lab." Typically 2-5 students are geology majors, the rest are taking the course to fill a gen ed requirement.
Course Goals:
1. Students will be able to interpret the geologic history of a rock, an outcrop, a core, an area, and a map and cross section.

Geology In The Classroom
Children are fascinated by rocks and minerals. When rocks and fossils can be studied, tested and discussed in a classroom, students tend to learn and retain more information. (Lisa Alter Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute) The focus of this paper is to provide a sample lesson plan that will cover learning objectives and activities to be used in an elementary classroom studying rocks and soil classification. This material is directed to the lower elementary grades to peak interest and form a geological foundation for future learning. Getting Started The first activity is a rock swap, to make things a little more interesting try and get another class involved, this will provide a larger variety of rocks and provide some interaction between classes. (Rock hounds) The Friday before starting the unit send home a homework announcement asking parents to please aid their children in collecting three rocks from their neighborhood along with a paper bag to store their specimens.

Historical geology deals with the historical development of the earth from the study of its rocks. Tne their structure, composition, and interrelationships and are examined for remains of past life. Historical geology includes paleontology , the systematic study of past life forms; stratigraphy , of layered rocks and their interrelationships; paleogeography, of the locations of ancient land masses and their boundaries; and geologic mapping, the superimposing of geologic information upon existing topographic maps. Historical geologists divide all time since the formation of the earliest known rocks (c.4 billion years ago) into four major divisions : the Precambrian Paleozoic Mesozoic , and Cenozoic eras. Each, except the Cenozoic, ended with profound changes in the disposition of the earth's continents and mountains and was characterized by the emergence of new forms of life (see geologic timescale ). Broad cyclical patterns, which run through all historical geology, include a period of mountain and continent building followed by one of erosion and, in turn, by a new period of elevation.

Historical geology is the use of the principles of geology to reconstruct and understand the history of the earth. It focuses on geologic events that change the earth's surface and the use of stratigraphy to tell the sequence of these events. It also focuses on the evolution of plants and animals during different time periods in the Geologic timescale Nicolaus Steno (also known as Niels Stensen) was the first to observe and propose some of the basic concepts of historical geology. One of these concept was that fossils originally came from living organisms . The other, more famous, observations are often grouped together to form the Laws of Stratigraphy . James Hutton also contributed to early understanding of the earth's history with his observations at Edinburgh concerning an angular unconformity in a rock face. He first proposed the theory of
