Specific Guidelines and Criteria for Courses Submitted in
GEOLOGY, PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY, AND EARTH SCIENCE
Specific guidelines and criteria in the natural sciences require that courses in the natural sciences should be broad in scope and content rather than specific to an aspect of a discipline, and may include interdisciplinary science courses. Courses in the natural sciences must include laboratory experiences which emphasize the scientific method. General studies courses in Geology, Physical Geography, and Earth Science must include at least one designated period per week that involves hands-on laboratory or field experiences with emphasis on the scientific method. Courses in this area may include courses in Environmental Science. Topics covered in an introductory course in Geology include rocks and minerals, composition of Earth's interior, plate tectonics, geomorphic processes and the development of the present day landscape, natural resources, origin and evolution of Earth through time, and life on Earth through time as recorded in rocks and fossils. Topics covered in an introductory course in Physical Geography include weather, climate and climate regions, natural vegetation and vegetation regions, natural landscape processes and natural landscape regions, natural resources, soils and soil regions, and water resources.

Geography of Belize
World Facts Index Belize Map of Belize Belize is located on the Caribbean coast of northern Central America. It shares a border on the north with the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, on the west with the Guatemalan department of Petén, and on the south with the Guatemalan department of Izabal. To the east in the Caribbean Sea, the second-longest barrier reef in the world flanks much of the 386 kilometers of predominantly marshy coastline. Small cay islands totaling about 690 square kilometers, dot the reef. The area of the country totals 22,960 square kilometers, an area slightly larger than El Salvador or Massachusetts. The abundance of lagoons along the coasts and in the northern interior reduces the actual land area to 21,400 square kilometers. Belize is shaped like a rectangle that extends about 280 kilometers north-south and about 100 kilometers east-west, with a total land boundary length of 516 kilometers. The undulating courses of two rivers, the Hondo and the Sarstoon, define much of the course of the country's northern and southern boundaries. The western border follows no natural features and runs north-south through lowland forest and highland plateau. Geology Belizean geology consists largely of varieties of limestone, with the notable exception of the Maya Mountains, a large intrusive block of granite and other Paleozoic sediments running northeast to southwest across the south-central part of the country. Several major faults rive these highlands, but much of Belize lies outside the tectonically active zone that underlies most of Central America. During the Cretaceous period, what is now the western part of the Maya Mountains stood above sea level, creating the oldest land surface in Central America, the Mountain Pine Ridge plateau.

The photos will show where in the constellation the object is located by using a normal (50mm) lens and then a telephoto (300mm) lens. The nearly 50 objects will be photographed from dark sky locations frequently visited by the Astronomy class. SEDIMENTARY PETROLOGIC STUDIES: Sand samples contain a wealth of information about the environment in which they were deposited. Grain size, rounding, sorting, composition, as well as microfossils can reveal a great deal. In addition, sand is also used to determine the geologic characteristics of the source area. This project will be a collection of microscope slides containing sands from a variety of sources from around the world. Their Geologic significance and characteristics will be the nature of this projects purpose. The samples will be included in classes taught at GCC.
