As Old As Stone: Geology + Physical Attributes The Great Pyramid of Giza, built of almost entirely limestone over 4500 years ago.
Wonder Material
Limestone was the essential building material of the Great Pyramid of Giza. "Stone beams some sixteen feet long" supported the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis, the Mausoleum of Maussollos, and the feet of Colossus at Rhodes were all constructed of marble. The Lighthouse at Alexandria was thought to have been built from a lightly-colored natural stone as well. Magma travels upward but becomes trapped where it cools slowly under immense pressure to form granite.
Igneous Rocks
Its immense density is also what makes granite so hard and durable. Of course with the right modern tools, you could do some pretty good damage to the ancient rock. However under proper care, granite is extremely resistant to the daily abuses it receives in its traditional human applications. A side note about igneous rock classification is that some of the darkest igneous stones, such as black "granites," are not technically granite. It's alright to still call them granite. For commercial purposes, the term refers to any stone that has a high level of resistance to scratching and abrasion. Professional geologists would technically classify the black "granites" as basalts. Basalts still form from magma but cool more quickly and on earth's surface. As with granite, basalts are mainly composed of feldspar. However, visually identifying the rest of the minerals present is trickier because basalts have a finer mineral grain. Even though they formed a little differently and have a different physical appearance, basalts are just as dense and durable as textbook granite. So don't worry if you call basalt granite, unless of course you're talking to a professional geologist.

Welcome to the Physical Sciences Department at San Diego Mesa College. The department offers courses in five disciplines: physics, astronomy, geology, engineering, and physical science (general). The physical sciences, which are part of a domain called "natural science," focus primarily on the non-living aspects of the physical world. Chemistry, a major component of the physical sciences, has its own separate department at Mesa College. The life sciences at Mesa College are organized into a separate biology department as well. The purpose of this page and the other linked pages is to furnish information about the Physical Sciences Department's programs, courses and staff. Our department offers courses that transfer to 4-year colleges and universities, including general-education courses for non-science majors, and courses (primarily in physics) that will fulfill the lower-division requirements of students aiming for careers in engineering and science.
