Right now I'm doing anything to procrastinate from doing my Geometry homework. I really DO NOT like Geometry at all. Also, I realized that I have to come up with a timeline for my science project with my other partners. We're doing the effects of worms on pH levels in soil. :O Any advice will make you my best friend.
Also, I've gotten into watching so many new shows. It's really sad, because I have to keep up with all of them. They're: Lie To Me and Human Target. Along with my other shows I've been keeping track of, it's getting overwhelming but I HAVE to watch them all. Do you guys like crime shows? Recommend some! :D Posted on February 21st, 2010 at 07:29pm

  • Bones! I LOVE that show!! krazykat , February 22nd, 2010 at 02:03:03am I know what you mean about Geometry. I just had a week off from school but luckily my teacher was nice enough to not give us homework. I don't really know what to say about the worms. Sorry. I had a pet worm once...it died. but anywhoooo
I like Lie to me as well thought i haven't been keeping up with it. I like the original CSI you know like..."LVPD OPEN UP!" and all that. I also like Bones. It is AMAZAZING!

Related articles How Children Learn Geometry Lesh, Post, and Behr (1987) proposed a model describing the acquisition of a mathematics concept by a learner. They identified five representational modes the learner needs to negotiate to claim acquisition of a concept: concrete modeling, pictorial modeling, real-world situations, symbolic representations (the "written" language of mathematics), and the oral language of mathematics. Their research suggested that children who have difficulty translating a mathematical concept from one representation into another are the same children who exhibit difficulty with problem solving and computation comprehension. Thus any attempt to strengthen children's abilities to negotiate among these representations improves the growth of their conceptual understanding (Van de Walle, 1998). Although facility with the language does not guarantee facility with the associated concepts (Yokochi, 1990), neither does facility with the concepts guarantee facility with the language (Pickreign, 1993). This point is often reflected in instruction with the use of substitute language in geometry; for example, to speak of "points" rather than vertices, or "square corners" rather than right angles. In grammar instruction, one would not speak only of "person words" rather than nouns or in science education speak only of"bugs" rather than insects. Nelson-Herber (1986) suggested that substitute words can be detrimental to comprehension of concepts. A connection between the "common" phrases and the technical vocabulary is necessary for more complete understanding.

What Should I Know About Learning and Teaching Geometry?
Teaching and learning geometry seem to be just as difficult for educators, as it is for students. Students have varying learning styles and habits, and those who fall behind may have a challenge catching up. Teachers can find different educational methods at the following websites:
  • Teacher Learning
Search through teacher learning projects, publications or events with the Education Development Center. Some of the Division of Mathematics Learning and Teaching works include Connecting with Mathematics and Finding a Mathematical Voice.
