Overview
Geological Setting
NMSU's location in the southern part of the Rio Grande Rift affords excellent opportunities for geophysical field studies of rift structures. The climate is dry and mild (8.5' annual rainfall, daily high temperatures about 65 degree Fahrenheit in the winter and 92 degree Fahrenheit in the summer), allowing field work to be conducted year-around.
The Graduate Program
The Department of Physics offers graduate study with concentration in geophysics leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. level degrees in either Physics with a concentration in Geophysics or in an interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree. Our recommended curriculum for the masters's degree requires 24 credit hours of course work in geophysics, geology, and physics, plus six hours of thesis credit. The Ph.D. degree requires publishable thesis research. With the present faculty, research will occur principally in the following areas: Mineral physics; seismic studies of lithospheric and upper mantle structure; seismic tomography; seismotectonics involving earthquake and remote sensing data; and geodynamics and planetary physics.
Facilities
Geophysical equipment available to students includes a broadband seismic recording system, a LaCoste gravimeter, a proton magnetometer, DC resistivity gear, and a down hole temperature probe. In-house geophysics computing facilities include 10 Ultra Sun workstations, and several assorted personal computers. The physics department as well as NMSU also offer additional computing facilities. Laboratory space is commodious.

Core Capabilities These six areas are considered the Geophysics Department's Core Capabilities
Historical Background
Geophysics has been a core science at Berkeley Lab for over 30 years, predating the 1977 formation of the Earth Sciences Division (ESD) within the Lab. During the world energy crisis of the mid-1970s, keen interest arose in finding alternative sources of energy. Thus, a number of UC Berkeley/Berkeley Lab scientists began exploring the possibility of finding geothermal energy sources using advanced geophysical techniques. This interest led to geothermal field explorations in Northern California, Nevada, and Mexico. Such projects soon expanded into geophysical studies of potential nuclear waste storage sites, and were the beginnings of ESD. Since then, in addition to continuing and expanding its geothermal studies (in response to the abiding interest in locating and developing alternative energy sources), the ESD Geophysics Department (ESD Geophysics) has expanded its mission and now conducts work on a wide variety of geotechnical problems for energy and environment. This work includes remediation projects at contaminated DOE sites, CO

Archaeological Geophysics
Introduction
Surface geophysics methods are utilised for delineation of various phenomena including; buried walls, ditches, burial mounds, graves, ancient water courses, field boundaries and generally for forensic applications. The primary motivation for using geophysics is to identify 'key' areas for detailed investigation and/or as follow up to conventional archaeological dig.
Techniques
SURFACE geophysical methods used include; fluxgate magnetic gradiometry, resistivity profiling, 2D resistivity imaging, electromagnetic profiling and ground penetrating radar.

An Introduction to Geophysics
G eophysics is the study of the earth’s properties by applying physical theories and using instruments for measurement. Since antiquity men have been studying the earth’s properties in order to predict earthquakes, but real progress happened in the 1500’s and has continued since then. Scientists began working to understand how magnetism and gravity are related to earthquakes. Magnetism is an attraction to metals such as iron, nickel, cobalt, and their alloys. Its main character is a magnetic force. Though metals are more strongly influenced by magnetism all materials are under its influence to a degree. One of its particular manifestations in physics is that it’s a component of electromagnetic waves. Light is an electromagnetic wave. Magnetism is now used to help predict the frequency of earthquakes by utilizing the fact that earthquakes happen in clusters. They can’t yet use this information to predict exactly when an earthquake will occur, but when there is an earthquake statistics show others will follow. Heat is a factor in magnetism and when the heat in an atom is at an intermediate temperature according to “Curie temp,” then instead of the clusters of atoms moving in different directions like when under high temperature, aligned clusters form and these groups move in the same direction, though there is more than one grouping.
