    Degrees offered:
M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Interdisciplinary studies with expertise in physics, chemistry, mathematics and/or biology are encouraged.
    Program areas:

    Igneous Petrology and Geochemistry
    Applied Geophysics

    Space Geodesy
    Program description: Resources: Other perks:
New initiatives within MGG include the South Florida and Caribbean Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit SFC CESU, Center for Southeastern Tropical Advance Remote Sensing (CSTARS), and the Research Initiative on Bahamian Stromatolites.
    Requirements:
The undergraduate student wishing to prepare for graduate work in marine geology and geophysics must be well trained in the basic sciences. Applicants must take the GRE, and those whose first language is not English must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of at least 550. According to the special interests of the individual, the undergraduate major and minor should be in geology, physics, chemistry, and/or mathematics.
    Funding opportunities:
The overwhelming majority of MGG students are supported as research assistants. These assistantships, which are awarded competitively, provide a monthly stipend and cover tuition costs. Students not supported as research assistants are generally supported on special fellowships provided by their employer or, for some non-U.S. students, their home country.

If you are looking for geophysical services please go to our Contractor's page for a listing of service providers throughout the United States. If you are not familiar with doing geophysical surveys we strongly recommend you consider hiring a professional. Our rental program is structured for those familiar with the use of this type of equipment. Our broadest line of equipment is resistivity meters. From the traditional four electrodes at a time approach, all the way through resistivity imaging systems with hundreds of electrodes being sampled remotely, and everything in between, we have a system that can best meet your budget and requirements. We also have the software for resistivity inversion, both 2D and 3D, even for marine and ERT.

    T. Mark Harrison, Director The surprisingly low geotherm under which 4.2 billion-year-old zircons formed, together with inclusion assemblages characteristic of subduction-related magmas, indicates their formation in a convergent margin environment. This implies that plate tectonics initiated on Earth almost immediately following planetary formation. Spacecraft images show ‘spirals on the sea’ in sunlight and radar reflectance but none have been measured in situ . In oceanic simulations with high spatial resolution, spiral structures have been shown to emerge from the instability and wrap-up of cold surface temperature filaments undergoing frontogenetic collapse induced by surrounding mesoscale eddy currents.

The following projects are presently active in our group. Sea Level Rise - Satellite altimeter observations from the RADS database system are used for determining global and regional mean sea level trends from 1992 to the present, as well as sea level trend maps. Sea Ice Research Group - Laser and radar altimeter observations are used to determine changes in sea ice volume. Altimetric Bathymetry - Depths derived from satellite gravity data are combined with ship measurements to produce the best estimated depth maps of the world's seafloor available. Near-Real Time Analyses - Altimeter data, processed daily within 1-2 days of acquisition, are used operationally for determining ocean currents, monitoring sea level, and are assimilated in models to improve forecasts of El Nino and hurricane intensity.

Aims and scope
Near Surface Geophysics is an international journal for the publication of research and development in geophysics applied to near surface. It places emphasis on geological, hydrogeological, geotechnical, environmental, engineering, mining, archaeological, agricultural and other applications of geophysics as well as physical soil and rock properties. Geophysical and geoscientific case histories with innovative use of geophysical techniques are welcome, which may include improvements on instrumentation, measurements, data acquisition and processing, modelling, inversion, interpretation, project management and multidisciplinary use. The papers should also be understandable to those who use geophysical data but are not necessarily geophysicists. Impact Factor 2009: Near Surface Geophysics is indexed/abstracted in the ISI Alerting Service and Science Citation Index Expanded
Near Surface Geophysics is published 6 times a year.
