Sultana Parvanta, Ph.D Educator and Counselor Dr. Sultana Parvanta was Director for Communities In Schools at the California Leadership Training Center on the campus of California State University in Monterey Bay. Sultana has been involved in teacher education for more than two decades nationally and internationally. She served as Director of Curriculum and Training for the State of Georgia Alternative Schools programs, planned and coordinated statewide teacher training institutes, conferences and published a bi-annual Teachers Tip for teachers in the state. Dr. Parvanta taught at Emory University, Georgia State University, Indiana University and California State University in departments of Education, Teacher Training, Policy Studies, and Wellness. She was researcher at the Center for Research on effective Schooling for Disadvantaged Students at the Johns Hopkins University.
Currently, Sultana is an active volunteer, and continues to study and teach Qigong, and serve as a counselor and teacher in her community.

  • school image by dinostock from Fotolia.com Alternative schools offer a more flexible environment than traditional public schools Alternative schools are public schools that provide a substitute for students who have been removed from regular classrooms due to repeated disruptive behavior. Prior to the Education Reform Act of 2000, Georgia offered grants to local school systems to operate alternative schools, called Crossroads Schools. Grants are no longer offered and each school system is required to provide an alternative program. However, the new regulations allow the use of in-school programs including in-school suspension to meet the requirement, so many school systems, including the Gordon County Schools and the City of Calhoun Schools have closed their freestanding alternative schools.
