Alternative Routes to obtaining a Georgia certificate while you work as an educator
Designed for "career switchers" who already hold degrees and have various life experiences, as well as former educators with expired or invalid certificates who wish to return to the classroom. These routes are not limited to, but are of particular importance when completed in high need, shortage fields such as math, science, foreign language and special education. Initial eligibility requirements lead to a Non-Renewable Certificate and remaining requirements are completed while the individual is serving as an educator in a Georgia public school. Upon completion of this route, the Clear Renewable Certificate is issued.
Traditional Routes to obtaining a Georgia certificate by completing a state-approved educator preparation program, usually at a college or university.
This process could include earning a college degree along with the state certificate, or you might complete the requirements just for a certificate after you have already finished your degree. In addition, educators who move to Georgia with an out-of-state certificate must meet Georgia's certification requirements through reciprocity procedures. For the most part, the traditional initial programs are completed prior to employment in a public school and lead directly to Georgia's Clear Renewable Certificate.

Title 20, Education, of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated (O.C.G.A.), outlines the legal guidelines which govern the state education program. Title 20 creates the Professional Standards Commission (PSC) and assigns it responsibility for providing a regulatory system for "certifying and classifying" professional employees in public schools. Title 20 also requires the professional employees of all Georgia public elementary and secondary schools to hold state certification. Certification regulations and procedures are established to evaluate the credentials of prospective teachers as well as other professional employees in the schools, to ensure they meet specified preparation standards and requirements. State certification provides a standardized base-level of professional knowledge and skills for the educators working in public schools. Like many other states, Georgia has adopted a combination of individualized requirements and some commonly used standards developed by the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC). Georgia Teacher Certification
By Lila Roe eHow Contributor updated: April 7, 2010 I want to do this! What's This? In order to become a teacher, a person must demonstrate competency in various areas. In most instances, this involves taking college courses specifically geared towards teacher certification but can involve other routes. The state of Georgia allows several routes to certification in addition to this most common one. The alternatives take into account life experience and particular types of professions, among other things. The Georgia Professional Standards Commission has designated several routes to allow schools to hire quality teachers from a diverse background. The commission provides links to everything related to the application online. Anyone with questions about requirements or the application process should contact the commission.
Traditional Route
  • The most traditional route to certication in Georgia entails attending a college or university program geared specifically towards a career in education . In one instance, a person might pursue an undergraduate degree in education as well as post-graduate training for certification. Alternately, a person might pursue an undergraduate degree in another field but choose to become a certified teacher and undergo the same post-degree program. In both cases, once a person has completed the certificate program, the school must recommend the person as a teacher and the standards commission must review the content of both the degree and certificate programs before issuing certification.

    Early Childhood Math
Endorsement programs at the graduate level are offered to teachers wishing to add areas of expertise to their current State of Georgia Teacher Certification. One of the endorsement programs is offered in early childhood mathematics through the Mathematics Department. This program is designed for early childhood teachers interested in learning how to better meet the math needs of the students in his/her classroom. The program addresses the competencies required by the Professional Standards Commission's Georgia Math Endorsement. Enrollment will be restricted to graduate students.
