GEOTHERMAL ENERGY SITE INDEX CATAMARAN HULL SOLAR PANELS ELECTRIC MOTORS ... GOODIES G eothermal energy is a proven resource for direct heat and power generation. In over 30 countries geothermal resources provide directly used heat capacity of 12,000 MW and electric power generation capacity of over 8,000 MW. It meets a significant portion of the electrical power demand in several developing countries. For example, in the Philippines geothermal provides 27% of that country's total electrical generation, from power plant complexes as large as 700 MW. Costs of geothermal electric power are very dependent on the character of the resource and project size. The unit costs of power currently range from 2.5 to over 10 US cents per kilowatt-hour while steams costs may be as low as US$3.5 per tonne. Major factors affecting cost are the depth and temperature of the resource, well productivity, environmental compliance, project infrastructure and economic factors such as the scale of development, and project financing costs.

WHAT IS GEOTHERMAL ENERGY?
The word geothermal comes from the Greek words geo (earth) and therme (heat). So, geothermal energy is heat from within the earth. We can use the steam and hot water produced inside the earth to heat buildings or generate electricity. Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source because the water is replenished by rainfall and the heat is continuously produced inside the earth.
ENERGY INSIDE THE EARTH
Geothermal energy is generated in the earth's core, about 4,000 miles below the surface. Temperatures hotter than the sun's surface are continuously produced inside the earth by the slow decay of radioactive particles, a process that happens in all rocks. The earth has a number of different layers:

Sponsored Links: The ground beneath our feet contains a significant amount of energy in the form of heat. All of this geothermal energy has the potential to generate geothermal power to provide large amounts of electricity. People have used geothermal energy in the form of hot springs for centuries, however, the first attempt to generate electricity from this energy source did not occur until the 20th century. The production of electricity from geothermal energy sources can be a highly efficient method to generate a source of clean and renewable energy. Location is key for the development of an efficient geothermal power station, and therefore, significant levels of electricity can only be generated in certain areas. There are only a handful of locations across the world that are capable of producing viable and efficient levels of electricity from geothermal energy sources. As a result of this, in 2007, less than 1% of the worlds electricity supply was produced from geothermal sources. To harness geothermal energy and transform this into electricity, geothermal power stations are designed in a variety of ways.

Thermal energy is energy that determines the temperature of matter. Earth's geothermal energy originates from the original formation of the planet, from radioactive decay of minerals, from volcanic activity, and from solar energy absorbed at the surface. The geothermal gradient , which is the difference in temperature between the core of the planet and its surface, drives a continuous conduction of thermal energy in the form of heat from the core to the surface. From hot springs , geothermal energy has been used for bathing since Paleolithic times and for space heating since ancient Roman times, but it is now better known for electricity generation . Worldwide, about 10,715 megawatts (MW) of geothermal power is online in 24 countries. An additional 28 gigawatts of direct geothermal heating capacity is installed for district heating, space heating, spas, industrial processes, desalination and agricultural applications.

According to the Geothermal Energy Association , the geothermal power industry in the U.S. grew 26 percent in 2009, with 188 projects underway in 15 states that could produce up to 7,875 MW of new electric power - enough for about 7.6 million people. Geothermal energy involves using the heat of the earth to produce steam to drive generators that produce electricity. The federal economic stimulus, tax incentives, and the need to meet state renewable energy requirements are contributing to the growth in geothermal projects. Through the federal stimulus, over $600 million will be invested in research in 135 projects in 25 states over the next two years.
The Union of Concerned Scientists points out that the cost of generating electricity in geothermal facilities is declining, with some facilities achieving a 50 percent reduction in the price of electricity since 1980. But to take advantage of the full potential of geothermal energy, two emerging technologies need further development. One is enhanced geothermal systems and the other is the co-production of electricity from geothermal energy in oil and gas wells.

    How Does Geothermal Energy Work?
As fossil fuels cause damage to the environment and to the health of people, various alternative sources of energy have been developed by scientists to supply the world’s fuel needs. One of them is geothermal energy which comes from a natural source, the earth itself.
The word geothermal comes from two Greek terms “geo” meaning earth and “therme” meaning heat. In other words, geothermal energy refers to energy produced by heat stored in the earth’s core. Being nature’s resource, using it is bound to have no impact on the environment and to man.
    Various technologies
Geothermal energy is widely used in various applications today because of its great benefits.
    - Heat pumps. A geothermal heat pump is now popularly used in heating homes. It utilizes energy from the earth’s surface where temperature remains constant throughout the year approximately between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. This system involves a series of pipes or loops buried underneath the ground as well as a heat exchanger and ductwork inside the structure.
    - Hot water. Underneath the earth’s surface, one can find hot water and this can be piped to go directly into facilities. Its other uses include heating buildings, growing plants in greenhouses, heating water for fish farming, dehydrating onions and garlic and pasteurizing milk. In some cases, it can be used under roads and sidewalks to melt snow.

The trend toward homes that are powered by alternative energy sources , ranging from wind turbines and solar collection cells to hydrogen fuel cells and biomass gases, is one that needs to continue in the 21st century and beyond. We have great need of becoming more energy independent, and not having to rely on the supplying of fossil fuels from unstable nations who are often hostile to us and our interests. But even beyond this factor, we as individuals need to get “off the grid” and also stop having to be so reliant on government-lobbying giant oil corporations who, while they are not really involved in any covert conspiracy, nevertheless have a stranglehold on people when it comes to heating their  homes (and if not through oil, then heat usually supplied by grid-driven electricity, another stranglehold). geothermal energy facilities, as these companies see geothermal energy production as a highly profitable wave of the future. Another conclusion of Carbon Free is that solar energy hot water heating technology is an efficient technology for reducing home water heating costs in the long run, although it is initially quite expensive to install.  However, solar power is not yet cost-effective for corporations, as they require too much in the way of specialized plumbing to implement solar energy hot water heating. Lastly, Carbon Free tells us that installing wind turbines is an efficient way of reducing home electricity costs, while also being more independent. However, again this is initially a very expensive thing to have installed, and companies would do well to begin slashing their prices on these devices or they could find themselves losing market share.

by stuart on June 25, 2009 A little covered but growing alternative power source attracting large sums of both private and federal funding is geothermal energy. As working rig counts have fallen dramatically since this time last year ( Baker Hughes report Geothermal Energy Association Drilling technology is well up to the task, oil companies are capable of drilling up to 5 miles down on the continental US and most of these reserves are available at half those depths. The challenge is more in controlling the fracturing of the hot rocks and maintaining steam temperatures over the life of the project. With oil extraction costs and challenges rising it is a surprise the oil companies are not more active in a field where their hard earned skills in deep drilling should give them a clear advantage. A Unique Way To Profit From High Oil Prices
by Brian T Mikes, Managing Editor
The oil frenzy’s still building. Last week we peaked at almost $135 a barrel. According to CNBC and the talking heads, it’s the story of the century. Every tick higher on oil prices brought a new flood of information, concerns, and stories.
Now oil is off $10 per barrel.
Never fear. The story of the century is not getting away. The media has shifted their reporting. Now instead of asking if this is a new high they ask if this is the start of the fall.
Unfortunately for most of us, it doesn’t matter. Gasoline prices are now over $4 per gallon in many areas, and the trend is for higher prices still. What we need is for oil to fall by $50 not $10.
The way I see it there are a number of good ways to profit from high oil prices. The first and easiest is to invest in the oil producers. They benefit from high oil prices. The higher we go the more profits they make. Buy a basket of the biggest companies and hold on for a wild ride. Another way takes a bit more thought. -Sponsor-
