Culinaria Germany from Christine Metzger
Culinaria Germany from Christine Metzger.
"Culinaria Germany" is a great resource for anybody interested in German food. However don't expect just an ordinary recipe collection. This book is much more than that.
(Thats what Lilac Lily wrote about this great book)
The authors divided the book in 16 chapters- one for each of the 16 German states. Every chapter explores the food history and traditions of that particular state and features its most popular recipes. Some of my favorite recipes include: Koenigsberg Meatballs, Potato dumplings, Kasseler with Sauerkraut, Soleier (Pickled eggs), Baumkuchen squares, Kaiserschmarn and Doughnuts.
The authors also do a great job explaining different main ingredients, thus making it a delight for beginning as well as experienced cooks.
"Culinaria Germany" is illustrated with many detailed pictures of food and people. Granted some of the pictures of the actual Germans are a little dated but that's what gives this book even more charm.
Overall a great addition for your cookbook collection.

Metric Conversion Chart for Cooking and Baking
    Conversions for
In German (European) cooking, recipe ingredients tend to be measured by weight , rather than volume (US). If you don't have a , or kitchen scale, to measure cooking ingredients, here's a conversion chart that can help. The following tables allow you to convert units of weight (grams) to units of volume (tablespoons, teaspoons) for use with the recipes in our collection. There is also a Celsius to Fahrenheit table for oven temperatures How to Use the Metric Chart : Find the ingredient you want to measure, and then the English unit you want to convert to. For example, if you want to convert 130 grams of flour to the English system, you first find Mehl on the chart. Go across on the chart to find "HTS" ("heaping tablespoon") and the number of grams in a heaping tablespoon (15). 130 grams of flour = 8.6 heaping tablespoons (130/15=8.6). For larger amounts, use the cups conversion chart (for liquids). Note : These conversions are only approximate measures. For best results use a kitchen scale or a liter measuring cup.

Many cooking appliances available in the U.S. and around the world have been engineered, if not manufactured, in Germany. They go by names most would recognize, including AEG, Bosch, Miele, Siemens and Neff. These companies make ovens, ranges, cooktops and small appliances for cooking, as well as other residential appliances, such as washers, dryers, vacuum cleaners and dishwashers.

Ninety percent of Miele's appliances are still manufactured in Germany. In the cooking world, Miele makes cooktops and ovens utilizing either gas, electric or induction methods. Standard oven features are touch control pad, multi-lingual display, metric/English conversion, convection, residual heat cooking, infrared broiling and self-cleaning. AutoRoast, Intensive Bake and Sabbath are trademark modes of the Miele oven.

Welcome to our website. We are an empty nest couple that has been around the world through many military assignments. Creating this business has allowed us to develop a closer relationship together through our work. When we are not working around our house or small farm, we are always in the kitchen kneading a batch of dough or cooking something that smells good. This business has offered the opportunity to involve our extended family with us in our business. We are a family that has a cultural background in cooking and baking still on a regular basis. As our parents involved us in helping in the daily preparation of meals, we have continued this tradition weekly with our grandchildren which connect us with the next generation. This also allows us to expose the grandchildren to the German baking and cooking along with the holiday traditions that we learned growing up.

Posted 11/13/2010 @ 7:05:50 pm by todaysgermancooking.com A friend sent me this recipe twenty five years ago when we were traveling in the military. I usually bake these tiny tarts for the holidays but they are a hit any time of the year. I shared the fuggy pecan tartlets with many wives while traveling in the military with my husband. They are easy to make, fuggy and moist. Every one loves them every time I make them. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
