Hot Springs are similar to geysers, but their underground channels are large enough to allow rapid circulation of water. Rising hot water releases heat energy by evaporation or hot water runoff, while convection currents return the cooler water to the underground system, thus maintaining equilibrium. The microorganisms which live in and around the hot springs often make the pools very colorful.

Geysers, Hot Springs and Laguna Blanca (Salar de Uyuni Tour - Part 3)
3rd day and last of the Salar de Uyuni your, we had to get up very very early, 3:30a.m - 4:00a.m I think. We reluctantly woke up in the very cold morning, had a very cold fash wash and toothbrush and headed off to see natural gysers, dip into hot springs and see the Laguna Blanca before heading back to Uyuni. The geysers were very sulphuric and extremely hot and it was amazing to see amidst all this heat and pressure, there will still patches of snow and ice all over the place. After the geysers, we went to a natural hot springs to dip in before breakfast. Was a tough decision to decide whether to undress in this cold.. I finally decided for and it was a very very good decision until it was time to come out of the hot springs! It was freezing cold at above 5000 metres and froze myself up while trying to dry myself up and dress up. But a good hot chololate and pancakes for breakfast made up for the cold. After the hot springs, we went to see the Laguna Blanca, which as the name suggests, is a white lake.. the extreme concentration of salt makes it white. We checked that out, followed by many Landscapes that Salvador Dali used as inspiration for his paintings. The rest of the day was mostly driving and driving to get back to Uyuni, our starting point.

Y ellowstone is a country teeming with an estimated 10,000 thermal features. Of these only three percent are geysers. The rest are steaming pools, hissing fumaroles, bubbling mud pots or warm seeps. Most of Yellowstone's geysers are small, and sputter and splash, barely reaching ten feet in height. Only six grand geysers, those which erupt 100 feet or higher on a predictable daily basis, exist. Old Faithful, the most famous of these, erupts once approximately every 45 to 90 minutes. Beneath the thermal basins lie the mechanisms which control these features. The most essential element is magma-underground molten rock. No one knows exactly how close to the surface this body of magma lies. Geologists believe the earth's crust is less than 40 miles thick in Yellowstone compared to 90 miles under most other land areas. Intruded into this thinner crust. like bubbles, are magma intrusions-also known as plutons. These intrusions are typically at a depth of four to ten miles. In most regions of the earth's crust the temperature gradient averages about 1.4F per 100 feet. A test well drilled at Norris Geyser Basin during the late 1920s revealed a temperature of 401 F at a depth of 265 feet. Thus the ground temperature gradient at this point is an astonishing 123F per 100 feet.

31. Geysers And Hot Springs
Geysers Hot Springs Geysers are probably the most beautiful example of hydrothermal interplay. If the circulation system is restricted, and the ground water is retained

Iceland, which gave the word "geyser" to the international vocabulary, now has only about a dozen active geysers, which, in fact, would only operate sporadically without artificial assistance. The area around Geysir is amongst the main thermal centres in the country, with springs ranging between 80'C and 100'C. The Great Geyser itself is now waning after about 8000 years of activity. It erupted every half hour 200 years ago, but nowadays it only bursts out after long, irregular intervals unless it is stimulated by soap-powder. Strokkur, nearby, is kept on a bore-hole ife-support machine and can thus still spurt 20m into the air every few minutes so as not to disappoint the customers. Hot springs have a quicker, less restricted water circulation and can rise to the surface without gas or steam. Sometimes the hot waters pass through limestones as well as volcanic rocks and bring up calcium carbonate, which is then redeposited. They form the decorative organ-pipe terraces at Pamukkale in central Turkey and at Mammoth Springs in Yellowstone Park. In Yellowstone Park these springs also form superb pools, where the varying temperatures in the still water support different sorts of algae, each with a distinctive brilliant colour. Grand Prismatic Pool and Beauty Pool contain rings of red, yellow, emerald green or sapphire blue, and even the streamlets draining from them are multicoloured. Hot springs become notably muddy when the water table is lower, where precipitation is rare, or where the waters are contaminated by precipitates held in solution or suspension. They form mudpots or mud volcanoes that are usually grey, although they can be brilliantly coloured like Fountain Paint Pot in Yellowstone Park. They draw their fascination from their constant bubbling that can be as impressive as the beginning of Macbeth. Yellowstone Park has spectacular mudpots, ranging from 1 m to 20m across, that have been given picturesque names such as Black Dragon's Caldron and Cooking Hillside.
