Ghana like most other African nations has rich traditional cultures that differ from one ethnic group or tribe to the other. This cultural diversity is evidenced by the plethora of festivals , which are a good way to gain exposure to the dance, music, fashions and food of the indigenous people. Ghana has a festival every month of the year, and each one commemorates a Rite of Passage, a Change of Season, a Migration or a Festive Occasions. Some of the festivals celebrated annually include the DIPO PUBERTY RITES festival, which takes place in March/April, and the HOMOWO festival which is celebrated in August/September to celebrate the end of an historical famine. Ashanti Kingdom Kumasi, the capital of the erstwhile Ashanti Kingdom now known as the Ashanti region is a hotbed for individuals interested in the history and traditions of the Asante people. Within the city, one can visit the Kumasi Cultural Center and the Manhyia Palace and Museum. These two sites provide visitors with insights to the historical events, which made the Ashanti Kingdom a great one.Of special interest in the region are the royally designated art and craft villages, which produce arts, crafts and fabric for the Asantehene's Court. BONWIRE, is home to traditional artisans who still practice the age-old art of weaving KENTE Cloth. The name Kente is derived from the Akan word KENTEN, which means basket. This cloth is worn on festive and important occasions and is usually worn by traditional dancers who perform ADOWA. In close proximity to Bonwire is ATONSU, a village where ADINKRA Cloth is produced.

Ghanians come from six main ethnic groups: the Akan (Ashanti and Fanti), the Ewe, the Ga-Adangbe, the Mole-Dagbani, the Guan, and the Gurma.
    Ashanti Tribe
The Ashanti tribe of the Akan are the largest tribe in Ghana and one of the few matrilineal societies in West Africa. Once renown for the splendour and wealth of their rulers, they are most famous today for their craft work, particularly their hand-carved stools and fertility dolls and their colourful kente cloth. Kente cloth is woven in bright, narrow strips with complex patterns; it's usually made from cotton and is always woven outdoors, exclusively by men.
The village is a social as well as an economic unit. Everyone participates in the major ceremonies, the most frequent of which are funeral celebrations which typically last several days. Attendance at funerals is normally expected from everyone in the village and expenditure on funerals is a substantial part of the household budget.

In general, Ghanaians emphasize communal values such as family, respect for the elderly, honoring traditional rulers, and the importance of dignity and proper social conduct . Individual conduct is seen as having impact on an entire family, social group and community; therefore, everyone is expected to be respectful, dignified and observant in public settings and in most every aspect of life. Naming ceremonies puberty initiations, marriage and death are all marked by family ceremonies, and while Ghana has the highest percentage of Christians in West Africa , belief in traditional animist religions is still common. Seasonal festivals serve to bring a whole tribe or clan together in spectacular fashion.

CULTURE The Republic of Ghana evokes both the ancient Empire of Ghana and the riches of the "Gold Coast," as the area was called by the British. The historical abundance of Ghana's gold, timber, and kola nuts drew Europeans to its shores first to trade these goods and then to buy slaves. Ghanaians remain proud of the armed might with which the Ashanti people resisted the British until 1900. In 1957, Ghana became the first sub-Saharan nation to achieve independence, and its first president, Kwame Nkrumah, funneled state resources into the expansion of traditional arts and culture. Nkrumah also introduced strong support for pan-African ideas, and Ghana has been a leader in researching and celebrating African culture in its largest sense as well as in its most local traditions.

Ghana Ghanaians speak a distinctive West African version of English as a standard form, involving such usages as chop (eat) and dash (gift). English is invariably a second language. Mother tongues include over sixty indigenous languages. Akan is the most widely spoken and has acquired informal national language status. In addition to the large number of native speakers, many members of other groups learn Akan as a second language and use it fluently for intergroup communication. Ga-Adangme and Ewe are the next major languages. Hausa, a Nigerian language, is spoken as a trade language among peoples from the north. Many Ghanaians are multilingual, speaking one or two indigenous languages beside their native dialects and English. Although Ghana is bounded by francophone nations on all sides, few Ghanaians are proficient in French. Symbolism.

Culture in Ghana
Ghana comprises two distinct major cultures: one belonging to the peoples of the northern savannas, the other to the peoples of the southern forests and the coastal savanna. Northern peoples generally speak languages of the Gur family and southern peoples generally speak Kwa languages. Matrilineal inheritance and political succession is typical of peoples who inhabit western Ghana particularly Akans, Dagara and etc. Patrilineal inheritance and succession is common among the eastern people such as the Dagomba and the Adanbge. ( LaVerle,1995, p.83-90
Marriage in northern Ghana is normally very local, that is, the couple lives with the husband's family. It involves a degree of public celebration, often including the ritual kidnapping of the bride. Marriage is potentially polygynous, unless the husband is a practicing Christian. Elaborate puberty ceremonies are not common, but some people in the north practice clitoridectomy. The death ceremony in the northern Ghana, as in the rest of the country is the funeral. This is a major social event and
may last for several days. Traditional religious practices in the north focus on domestic shrines. Islam is also well entrenched in the larger towns. (

This is because of different classifications of varieties as either languages or dialects. As with many ex-colonies in Africa, the official language of Ghana is the colonial language, English. Nine languages have the status of government-sponsored languages: Akan, Dagaare/Wale, Dagbane, Dangme, Ewe, Ga, Gonja, Kasem, Nzema. However, two dialects of Akan, Twi and Fante, although not government-sponsored, are also widely-spoken in Ghana. Hausa is widely used as a lingua franca by Muslims in Ghana.

Ghana : Culture
Ghana, formerly the british colony of the Gold Coast, lies on the West African coast, just north of the equator. Its warm, humid climate is typical of the tropics. Ghana covers an area of around 239,000 square kilometers, much of it drained by the Volta River system. The population speaks languages that belong to the Kwa and Gur subfamilies of the Niger-Congo language group and is separated into more than 100 linguistic and cultural units. Ghana's population, as in most sub-Saharan African countries, consists of urban and rural workers, herders, traders, and fishermen. Matrilineal, patrilineal, and double-descent systems of social organization as well as villages and chiefdoms contribute to the national mosaic. In the 1980s, the governing Provisional National Defence Council tried to address the nation's education problems by introducing a system that emphasized vocational and technical training for all students. A rural electrification program was also initiated. At the same time, village- and community-based primary care organizations enhanced child-care and nutritional programs aimed at illiterate mothers and those who held orthodox notions about marital relations. Although it is difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs in the short term, at least some major problems have been recognized and steps have been taken to deal with them. The success of such programs, depends on the extent to which indigenous and modern institutions and cultural values are balanced and, particularly, on the manner in which conflict is resolved.

Ghana is quite a big country and there are six ethnic groups found in the country. The main group is the Ashanti and it is the most popular too. The others are the Ewe, Gurma, Guan, Adangbe and the Dagbani.
Every tribe has its own culture that is distinctive from the other and they speak their own language. The language and the culture are closely related to each other. The Ashanti is the biggest tribe and they exist all over West Africa. They have also become extremely popular for their craftsmanship. Several things made by the Ashanti tribe like clothing, wooden items and furniture, hand carved items and complex patterns are sold all over the world. Their main source of income is handicrafts. They even make explicit pottery using animal symbols. The Ewes are the lesser known tribe and they worship more than 600 deities. In their culture, they weave the popular Kente cloth and mostly use geometrical patterns that are complex to create. This tribe is mainly from the South Eastern part of Ghana. This tribe also has farmers who breed livestock and cultivate land.
