Travel Considered West Africa ’s most welcoming country, Ghana offers sun and sand, vital modern and traditional expressions of culture and a lesson in the fault lines created when far-flung villages come up against the forces of modernization. Ghana is generally flat: in fact, the whole country lies below 1000 meters. The northern two thirds are a low plateau. The country’s major asset is 500 kilometers of coastline, stretching from Cote d’Ivoire to Togo. Dominating its eastern flank is Lake Volta , the world’s largest artificial lake Ghana is one of the most densely populated countries in West Africa. Compared to other countries in the region, Ghana has a diverse and vibrant economy. The bulk of the country’s labour force is employed in agriculture, which accounts for 37 percent of its GDP and 35 percent of its export earnings. Attempts to diversify the economy and reduce Ghana’s dependence on gold and cocoa have led to increased exports of timber, shea-nut butter, tobacco, cotton and pineapples.

Ghana -geography Information sourced from wikipedia.org Ghana is a country located on the Gulf of Guinea, only a few degrees north of the Equator, therefore giving it a warm climate. The Greenwich Meridian also passes through Ghana, specifically through the industrial city of Ghana-Tema; so it is said that Ghana is geographically closer to the "center" of the world than any other country. Côte d'Ivoire is located to the west of Ghana while Burkina Faso and Togo are located to its north and east respectively. The coastline is mostly a low, sandy shore backed by plains and scrub and intersected by several rivers and streams. A tropical rain forest belt, broken by heavily forested hills and many streams and rivers, extends northward from the shore. North of this belt, the land is covered by low bush, park-like savannah, and grassy plains.

Climate
tODAY'S wEATHER
The climate of Ghana is tropical, but temperatures vary with season and elevation. Except in the north two rainy seasons occur, from April to July and from September to November. In the north the rainy season begins in April and lasts until September. Annual rainfall ranges from about 1,100 mm (about 43 in) in the north to about 2,100 mm (about 83 in) in the southeast. The harmattan, a dry desert wind, blows from the northeast from December to March, lowering the humidity and creating hot days and cool nights in the north. In the south the effects of the harmattan are felt in January. In most areas the highest temperatures occur in March, the lowest in August.
The average annual temperature is about 26 o C (about 79 o F).

Ancient Ghana
GEOGRAPHY

Despite its name, the old Empire of Ghana is not geographically, ethnically, or in any other way, related to modern Ghana. It lies about four hundred miles north west of modern Ghana. Ancient Ghana encompassed what is now modern Northern Senegal and Southern Mauritania.
ORIGINS
Nobody is sure when Ghana came into being. But some time at the beginning of the first millennium AD, it is thought that a number of clans of the Soninke people, (in modern Senegal) came together under a leader with semi-divine status, called Dinga Cisse.
There are different accounts of who he was, but all reports emphasise that he was an outsider who came from afar. It is likely that this federation of Soninke was formed possibly in response to the attacks of nomadic raiders, who were in turn, suffering from drought, and seeking new territory. Further west was the state of Takrur in the Senegal valley. It was linked to the north via a coastal route leading to Morocco via Sjilmasa.
GOLD
What is clear, is that the Empire derived power and wealth from gold. And the introduction of the camel in the Trans-Saharan trade boosted the amount of goods that could be transported.
