Action Alert: Opportunity for Global Warming Activism
A message from the Carolinas Coalition for Clear Air on Jan 27, 2007: please write to the NC Utilities Commission and the Charlotte Observer to express concerns about Duke Energy's proposed new coal-fired power plants at the Cliffside site. Details below.
ACTION ALERT!! 1) Public comments still being taken on the Cliffside Coal Plant Send your comments ASAP to the NC Utilities Commission at vance@ncuc.net * Cliffside will be a global warming machine emitting over 11 million tons of carbon dioxide into the air annually. * Duke Energy hopes to have Cliffside exempted from any future carbon regulation by the federal government, but that is not a sure thing. * Even though the price of Cliffside has jumped from $2 billion to close to $4 billion Duke still has not considered energy efficiency or renewable energy as a less expensive option for ratepayers.

Seeing the gibbons in this
Seeing the gibbons in this photo instantly brought me to the zoo, especially seeing them with the rope like this. It makes me remember looking in at some of the animals who were looking at me and wondering what they were thinking. Was I as interesting to them as they were to me? Somehow it made sense then, though I highly doubt I was particularly exciting to the monkies, primates, and penguins that I loved so much at the zoo. With all that said, however, I think that this is a very good image for bloggers. It would work well with blogs covering anything from evolution to zoos to primates to conservation efforts of the habitat of these gibbons.

Gibbons are small (20-30 pounds ) apes of the above taxonomic classification which have a diploid chromosome number of . They are popular in zoos due to their great agility and brachiating ability. Gibbons are naturally found in the treetop s of the rainforests of South-East Asia and Indonesia . They are much faster in the trees than on the ground, and thus spend the majority of their time there. Being quite closely related to humans, Gibbons are anatomically very similar. They are posessed of the same internal organs, and the same bones as humans, but appear quite drastically different due to different proportions, and the much greater quantity of fur which gibbons have. This fur is usually grey, white, black or cream, but patterns vary dramatically between species . Gibbons have very long arms for their body length. These enable the gibbon to swing through the tree s faster than a man can run. Like the great apes , and unlike the monkey s gibbons do not have developed tails, but this in no way impedes their acrobatic ability. Their legs are more in proportion, and used for walking along branches.
