101. Ice Age Explanation
Briefly describes what caused them, how the ice built up, and what later made it melt.
http://culter.colorado.edu/~saelias/glacier.html
What causes ice-ages? How does the ice build up? Throughout the Quaternary period, high latitude winters have been cold enough to allow snow to accumulate. It is when the summers are cold, (i.e., summers that occur when the sun is at its farthest point in Earth's orbit), that the snows of previous winters do not melt completely. When this process continues for centuries, ice sheets begin to form. Finally, the shape of Earth's orbit also changes. At one extreme, the orbit is more circular, so that each season receives about the same amount of insolation. At the other extreme, the orbital ellipse is stretched longer, exaggerating the differences between seasons. The eccentricity of Earth's orbit also proceeds through a long cycle, which takes 100,000 years. Major glacial events in the Quaternary have coincided when the phases of axial tilt, precession of equinoxes and eccentricity of orbit are all lined up to give the northern hemisphere the least amount of summer insolation. What makes the ice melt when the glaciation is over? Major interglacial periods have occurred when the three factors line up to give the northern hemisphere the greatest amount of summer insolation. The last major convergence of factors giving us maximum summer warmth occurred 11,000 years ago, at the transition between the last glaciation and the current interglacial, the Holocene. During the late Pleistocene, the Rocky Mountain regions of Canada and the regions farther west were almost engulfed in the Cordilleran Ice Sheet, while most of Canada east of the Rockies and the north-central and northeastern United States were covered by the Laurentide Ice Sheet. The divide between the two ice sheets lay east of the Rockies, with the two ice bodies meeting near the U.S.-Canadian border in eastern Montana. The Laurentide ice sheet is thought to have been as much as two miles thick at the center.

Waterton-Glacier Tour
Introduction
St. Mary Lake, Glacier National Park In September, 1999, I toured the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park and the adjacent area. This UNESCO World Heritage Site consists of Waterton National Park in Alberta, Canada and Glacier National Park in Montana, USA. This was a one week solo self-contained camping tour. I camped in public campgrounds and cooked most of my own meals. I cycled through Northwestern Montana, Southeastern British Columbia and Southwestern Alberta. I crossed the Continental Divide at Crowsnest Pass (4,434 feet) and again at Logan Pass (6,680 feet). I scheduled the trip for the week of Labor Day to avoid the bicycling restrictions on Going to the Sun Highway in Glacier National Park. Due to the time of year and the climate, I carried more clothing and gear than usual. I estimated the weight of my combined rig (bike and gear) at well over 100 pounds. The first half of 1999 had been a been very difficult for me. On New Year's Eve, I was laid off. About a month later, I took a management position with a small start-up company. This turned out to be an extremely demanding position. I found myself working 60 plus hours a week in a job that I didn't particularly enjoy. As a result, I was unable to train on weekdays. I had less than half my usual mileage for the year. My fitness suffered. After a few months, I began questioning my career direction and priorities.

2010 Field Season 2010 Field Season Featured a mixture of positive and negative glacier balances. A warm winter with modertate precipitation led to low snowpack on the glaciers as of early March. However, the spring was cool and wet returning higher elevations regions to a respectable snowpack. This was more pronounced in the northern part of the range. Avalanche fed glaciers in particular fared poorly. Summer melt conditions were some of the lowest of the last 27 years resulting in an equilibrium mass balance for glaciers overall in the North Cascades.

Like to live here?
You can even if you're not Grizzly Adams. The property (173) acres) located 31 miles south of the Canadian border off Montana Hwy 89, on the East side of Glacier National Park along the N. fork of Cut Bank Creek, is 100% unimproved at this time. We hope to balance all the work with recreation though (volleyball? massage? sweatlodge? painting?) and great food. Accommodations will be tents at first until we get more permanent dwellings built. Bring your own so there'll be enough to go around. We have a few. Our Mission Statement is outlined on page 2 of this site. Paul's article in Macrobiotic's Today Magazine really helps provide a basis to what we are all about. Next Page
