Statement of Sunny Wang
I have two series of work; the ¡§Cell Series¡¨ and the ¡§Chinese Characters Series¡¨. In the work that is displayed at this exhibition, I have applied various glass-art techniques so that the pieces show different types of beauty and express my thoughts multi-dimensionally. Cell Series........ The cell is the basic building block of life; it also extends life. Viewed under a microscope, the purity and beauty of cells is enchanting yet untouchable. Through my work, I seek to enlarge cells and let people touch them. I hope that people will be able to touch the forms of the cells and contemplate how these tiny things are the source of life. This series represents the essence of life.
I have been developing the Cell Series for more than two years. My earlier work focused more on the texture and lines of cells. The form of the work was thus simple, and the experience of observing each piece was enhanced by touching the surface. However, the more recent work in this exhibition is based on the complicated and beautiful structure of cells. And in these, I have employed the Lost wax casting method. Because of the spherical sculpturability of Lost wax casting, the cells appear as three dimensional and rich in form. As the cells are enlarged or transformed, light is able to pass naturally through them. By observing the light passing through the cells, one witnesses a dialogue between light and glass.

Glass is an art medium with seemingly endless technical versatility and a rich, long history. Basic elements of sand and soda lime are combined with coloring agents, then melted together to produce the raw material. The raw (soft) glass prepared in Murano, Italy, has a great reputation anchored in centuries of appreciation for its high quality. Although this well deserved reputation persists today, good quality glass is produced elsewhere, particularly in the United States
(Corning, Bull’s Eye and Schott glass).
This essay will attempt to clarify technical glass jargon and to describe in simple terms the commonly used glass art techniques. Most of those are illustrated in the sculpted letters created by the artists participating in The ABC of Glass Art . References to images of their work are throughout the text.
No one knows exactly where and when experimenting with Blown Glass , began. The earliest examples are circa 100 BC. The technique spread rapidly across the Roman Empire early in the Common Era. Although glass blowing has reached a high level of sophistication, very little of the technique itself has changed since the early times. To create a blown glass object, the molten glass is

edit Common types of glass bead manufacture
Glass beads are usually categorized by the method used to manipulate the glass - wound beads, drawn beads, and molded beads. There are composites, such as millefiori beads, where cross-sections of a drawn glass cane are applied to a wound glass core. A very minor industry in blown glass beads also existed in 19th century Venice and France.
    edit Wound glass beads
Probably the earliest beads of true glass were made by the winding method. Glass at a temperature high enough to make it workable, or "ductile", is laid down or wound around a steel wire or mandrel coated in a clay slip called "bead release." The wound bead, while still hot, may be further shaped by manipulating with graphite, wood, stainless steel or marble tools and paddles. This process is called marvering, originating from the French word "marver" which translates to "marble". It can also be pressed into a mold in its molten state. While still hot, or after re-heating, the surface of the bead may be decorated with fine rods called stringers of colored glass. These are a type of lampwork beads.

March 4th, 2008 by Just Glass Online Like it? Share it: Glass art evolved from techniques developed within the glassmaking industry and craftsmannship from the old art glass movement into the modern studio art glass movement. Art glass techniques include Lampwork (using torch flame to work glass), glass bead making, casting and fusing glass, stained glass and, perhaps best known in the studio glass genre; hand glass blowing. Forms in glass art range from stained glass panels and mosaics to vases, bowls and even intricate sculptures.
The surreal creations of famed glass artist Dale Chihuly and his collaborative teams have been displayed around the world. Chiluly is perhaps best known for his floating glass globes. History of Art Glass As both a functional and decorative craft, glassmaking was practiced in ancient Egypt and Assyria, and further developed by the Romans, who invented the glassmaking method of glass blowing.

...home/courses We enjoy helping others learn about our craft. To this end, we offer an introductory course in Glass Art as well as practical courses in warm glass - such as glass fusing and glass slumping, lampworking, glass casting - as well as traditional leadlighting (or stained glass). We are also happy to recommend other studios which teach other glass art techniques. We conduct in depth workshops in specific areas such as jewellery making, mould making, raking and casting. We will even take you through the process of building your own electric kiln for glass fusing and slumping. Warm glass - predominately fusing and slumping - is the current focus of glass art development in Australia and Internationally. Warm glass artists have a unique opportunity to explore a new medium (largely without preconceived limits) These courses provide students with the essential knowledge and practical skills to undertake glass slumping and fusing. Leadlighting is a traditional art form which remains popular today. We are happy to teach this subject in the traditional way but brought up to date with modern enhancements and standards. All of the courses are very much hands on and we run them at our Canberra studio in small groups of up to 4 adults both during the day and evenings in the week and also on weekends. Each student receives a full set of course notes and has a hands-on opportunity to create their own unique glass projects.
