Climate Impacts and Adaptation The Climate Impacts and Adaptation Initiative addresses the challenge of understanding and adapting to unavoidable impacts of climate change. In the world of contemporary American politics, the dangers of climate change remain hazy and indistinct. But among scientists a consensus has formed: We must act. Although there is still much we don't know, an overwhelming majority of scientists who study the issue believe that global warming is already changing our climate, with dangerous and potentially deadly consequences for the future.
The threat of climate change cuts across all of the Pacific Institute's programs and has been a focus of our work from the beginning. The Climate Impacts and Adaptation Initiative is dedicated to studying the impacts of climate change, educating policymakers about the dangers, and creating real-world solutions to slow or reverse this threat. The Hidden Dangers of Global Warming
Many researchers have brought attention to the better-understood impacts of climate changes like rising sea levels and changes in weather patterns. The Global Change program has contributed to these efforts while also drawing attention to hidden, but critical, threats.

USGS Office of Global Change: Welcome
What is Climate Change?
The USGS strives to understand how the earth works and to anticipate changes in how the earth functions. To accomplish this, USGS science aims to understand the interrelationships among earth surface processes, ecological systems, and human activities. This includes understanding current changes in the context of pre-historic and recent earth processes, distinguishing between natural and human-influenced changes, and recognizing ecological and physical responses to changes in climate. Global Change
Global Change research at the U.S. Geological Survey aims to reveal the consequences of global change, including climate change and variability, on ecosystem processes, structure, and function. Climate change and its effects on natural resources and human communities are among the most challenging issues confronting our Nation. Understanding and communicating the nature of climate change impacts can be equally challenging because of the complexity of the processes that influence global and regional environmental change. Rates of change in temperature, sea-level rise, growing season length, sea ice extent, permafrost decline, the habitat of multiple species and many other climate-related variables are expected to accelerate through 2100. Global change research in biology focuses on the response of ecosystems and biological communities and species to climate change and assesses future global climate change impacts. Projects support our partnership with the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP).

USGS Global Change Science
The earth's surface does not exist in a static, unchanging "natural" condition interrupted only by the work of humans, but instead it is a dynamic system of which humans are a part. Knowledge about changes to the Earth's surface and the underlying processes that induce them has enormous impact on how society responds to these changes and, ultimately, the cost of responding to change. USGS Global Change Research activities strive to achieve a whole-system understanding of the interrelationships among earth surface processes, ecological systems, and human activities. Activities of the program focus on documenting, analyzing, and modeling the character of past and present environments and the geological, biological, hydrological, and geochemical processes involved in environmental change so that future environmental changes and impacts can be anticipated.

Global Change
Most of the isolated peoples that anthropologists studied around the world in past generations are now in dismal situations. Small indigenous societies have suffered as a consequence of the spread of w estern culture over the last century. Some of these peoples have died out, while most are in terminal phases of the stressful process of rapid acculturation. This radical, often painful culture change is occurring mostly in underdeveloped nations today. These countries have persistent low levels of living that can be linked historically to the manner of their integration into the world economic system. They usually provide cheap raw materials and labor. Their natural and human resources are bought cheaply by rich nations and transnational corporations It is quite clear that small indigenous societies have not been the only ones experiencing rapid, dramatic culture change over the last century. People in all societies have faced unprecedented changes in their lives. There has been a globalization of economies so that the entire world is now economically tied together by complex webs of interdependence. Most manufactured items that we buy have components produced in several countries on different continents. Fresh produce in our supermarkets often was grown elsewhere, especially in the winter. Corporations regularly outsource their tech support and other phone based services to India. Manufacturing jobs also progressively move to China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and other nations where labor is comparatively cheap. In a very real sense, geograph

Integrating federal research and solutions for climate and global change
  • Home About Us Program Overview The U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) coordinates and integrates federal research on changes in the global environment and their implications for society. The USGCRP began as a presidential initiative in 1989 and was mandated by Congress in the Global Change Research Act of 1990 (P.L. 101-606), which called for " a comprehensive and integrated United States research program which will assist the Nation and the world to understand, assess, predict, and respond to human-induced and natural processes of global change ." USGCRP's Vision and Vision:
    Our Vision:
A nation, globally engaged and guided by science, meeting the challenges of climate and global change
    Our Mission:
To build a knowledge base that informs human responses to climate and global change through coordinated and integrated federal programs of research, education, communication, and decision support Thirteen departments and agencies participate in the USGCRP, which was known as the U.S. Climate Change Science Program from 2002 through 2008. The program is steered by the
