Welcome
Welcome to the web pages for the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, at the University of Sheffield.
We are one of the largest biological sciences Departments in the UK devoted to the study of whole organism biology, and together with the Departments of Biomedical Science, and Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, we form a biological sciences grouping with over 100 academic staff.
Our Research
Our research ranges from seeking to understand the mechanisms of evolution using molecular genetics, through to predicting the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss on ecosystem function.
Our Teaching
We teach seven degree courses in the Department, and a further course jointly with the Department of Geography. Most of these are available as either 3-year BSc or 4-year undergraduate Masters courses.

Since then I have seen other organizations use the terms "tools for change," "world tools," and so on. The original definition for Global Change Tools is "any medium that raises the spiritual consciousness of an individual." The word spiritual is key in my definition of a Global Change Tool. The following are two defintions according to Microsoft Bookshelf '95 Dictionary under the word medium: plural media a. A means of mass communication, such as newspapers, magazines, radio, or television.

Activity 3.3 and other Soils Components
Introduction and Rationale S oil erosion is a very widespread phenomenon, and is usually irreversible. Once the nutrient-rich surface soil has been lost, the ability to sustain plant growth is severely reduced, and increased runoff from the more impermeable subsoil results in a decrease in plant-available water. Furthermore, erosion brings various associated "off-site" problems, including reduced water quality from increased sediment loads and poorer air quality due to dust. T he severity, frequency and extent of erosion will be altered by changes in rainfall amount and intensity, and by changes in wind. Global change will thus amplify many current problems of soil erosion, and as certain soil thresholds are exceeded, potentially new and different problems could arise. It is therefore crucial to understand the potential impacts of global change on soils to allow the developments in predictive capability necessary to improve their management in the future. The GCTE Soil Erosion Network is dedicated to this goal, and forms a key component of GCTE's soil research.

SEARCH AFFILIATES ... News/Events The MIT Center for Global Change Science (CGCS) addresses fundamental questions about the environment and climate processes with a multidisciplinary approach. The Center's goal is to improve the ability to accurately predict changes in the global environment. The CGCS was founded in January 1990, and in 2006 became an independent center in the School of Science The CGCS seeks to better understand the natural mechanisms in ocean, atmosphere and land systems that together control the Earth's climate, and to apply improved knowledge to problems of predicting climate changes. The Center utilizes theory, observations, and numerical models to investigate climate phenomena, the linkages among them, and their potential feedbacks in a changing climate. The Center builds on existing programs of research and education in the Schools of Science and Engineering at MIT. The CGCS is not a degree-granting academic unit. A student enrolled in any department may become involved, which normally occurs through participation in research that is coordinated by a faculty advisor who is affiliated with the CGCS.

The reports earned the panel the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, shared with Al Gore, a leading environmentalist and former U.S. vice president. Raymond Bradley, Mathias Vuille and Douglas Hardy were all contributing authors to the IPCC reports. In addition, former Climate Center members Caspar Ammann (now at the National Center for Atmospheric Research) Michael Mann (now at Pennsylvania State University), Mark Serreze (CIRES, University of Colorado) and Pavel Groisman (National Climate Data Center, Asheville, N.C.) also contributed to the reports. PhD student Kinuyo Kanamaru has been awarded a DOSECC (Drilling, Observation and Sampling of the Earths Continental Crust) internship to examine the origin and composition of marine sediments from Saanich Inlet, British Columbia in order to help understand the impact of seismic activity on the long-term sediment flux.
