Establishing a Nurse-Client Relationship
By Cheryl Forchuk, RN, BA, BScN, MScN, and Barbara Brown, RN, BA, BScN, MScN
Reprinted from the Journal of Psychosocial Nursing 1989, vol.27,no.2
Publication of Hildegard Peplau's book Interpersonal Relations in Nursing (1952) heralded the introduction of the first systematic theoretical framework for psychiatric nursing and focused on the nurse-client relationship. Her theory has been described as drawing from developmental (Blake, 1980) interpersonal (Peplau, 1952) and learning (Lego, 1980) theories. Peplau (1952) has defined nursing as, "a significant, therapeutic, interpersonal process that aims to promote a patient's health in the direction of creative, constructive, productive, personal, and community living" (page 16). Peplau considered the relationship between nurse and client the key to the nursing process (Peplau, 1962; 1965). She conceptualized the nurse-client relationship as developing through phases: orientation, identification, exploitation, and resolution. The nurse and client have changing goals and roles as they pass through each phase. Peplau (1952) described the phases as "overlapping" and "interlocking" (page 17). For example, the nurse and client may return to an earlier phase. After initial issues have been resolved during exploitation they may return to problem identification to identify new issues to work on. Within this theory, awareness of the current stage of the-relationship is essential for the nurse to plan appropriate interventions.

The Effects of Goal Setting on Basic Cognitive Processes of Kids
By Susan Corey eHow Contributor updated: August 4, 2010 I want to do this! What's This? Focus your child's thinking skills on goal setting for achievement. writing image by Alison Bowden from Fotolia.com Cognitive processes, or thinking skills, involve obtaining, discriminating, and using knowledge from information taught. Kids use thought processes continuously in school , at home, and in every environment they encounter. Kids who set goals can achieve more success by applying cognitive processes in learning.
Effects
  • The effects of setting goals and achieving them will likely help your child feel more capable of his abilities for achieving higher accomplishments in anything he wants to do. The effects can increase his level of motivation and direct his cognitive processes on goal setting for any life accomplishment.
  • Goal Setting
  • Teach your child how to set goals and reach them tangibly. For instance, if she is having difficulty learning math, help her to describe in writing exactly what she will do to learn it. An example goal is, "I will practice learning math by using flash cards presented to me until I recall them by memory." Now she has a plan to follow, helping her to avoid feeling preoccupied with failure by focusing her thinking processes.

    Positive Thinking for Children
By Victoria Gregory eHow Contributor updated: September 4, 2010 I want to do this! What's This? Positive thinking can help children to feel confident. Happy Child image by Mat Hayward from Fotolia.com Positive thinking uses techniques such as affirmations, optimism, self-motivation, target-setting and visualization in order to supposedly create the right mindset for success. According to Louise Hay, seen as one the founders of self-help and positive affirmations, a positive outlook on life means the mind will expect success, good luck and happiness. What the mind expects, it will supposedly find or create. Through this, she claims, people can improve their life and even heal themselves.
    Praise
  • The first place that parents can start is with praise, also known as positive reinforcement. Even before you can teach a child positive thinking, you can reinforce a positive outlook with simple praise. Praise your children for everything, even the smallest achievements; never tell your child they are bad. Instead let them know what they have done wrong and why it is wrong. This lets them know they are good and clever and worthy of affection and praise. It increases self-esteem and confidence from an early age.
