Few individuals in human history have been born to such a privileged position and had such a promising beginning in life only to have their lives come to such a tragic end as did Mary Queen of Scots. Mary was born to Scottish Royalty with family ties through her mother to the most powerful families in France,The House Of Guise, and through her first marriage to the Dauphin to one of the most powerful families in Italy, the House of Medici.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The origins of golf are unclear and much debated. However it is clearly one of a family of similar and possibly related club and ball games that were recorded across medieval Europe, and many of the unique elements of golf evolved in the port towns around the Firth of Forth in eastern Scotland from the medieval period onwards.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews Ming Dynasty emperor Xuande (r. 1425–1435) A golf-like game is recorded as taking place on 26 February 1297, in the Netherlands , in a city called Loenen aan de Vecht , where the Dutch played a game with a stick and leather ball. The winner was whoever hit the ball with the least number of strokes into a target several hundred yards away. Some scholars argue that this game of putting a small ball in a hole in the ground using golf clubs was also played in 17th-century Netherlands and that this predates the game in Scotland. There are also other reports of earlier accounts of a golf-like game from continental Europe.

Golf is one of the few ball games that does not require a standardized playing area. Instead, the game is played on golf "courses", each of which features a unique design, although courses typically consist of either nine or 18 holes. Golf is defined, in the rules of golf , as "playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules." Golf competition is generally played for the lowest number of strokes by an individual, known simply as stroke play , or the lowest score on the most individual holes during a complete round by an individual or team, known as match play

      The History of Disc Golf
From a Niche Game to One of Today's Fastest Growing Sports
"Disc Golf" as it is known today began with "Steady" Ed Headrick, the father of disc golf and modern day disc sports. Headrick was the driving force responsible for the modern era of Frisbee sports. Ed founded the International Frisbee Association, established the Junior Frisbee Championship, established and organized the World Frisbee Championship and went on to create and standardize the sport of Disc Golf.

      The Discoblus
Disc golf in one form or another has been with us since the beginning of time. The early cavemen in their search for weapons to extend their ability to slay food probably found rocks before clubs. If they could kill something from a safe distance it would be much safer than a club or a sharp stick. Test of skill were a necessary pastime, closest to the target sounds familiar! Flat rocks had a different flight and flew further than round objects, skipping flat stones on the water, throwing shields, Eureka! Then came the discus that Discoblus threw which certainly resembled a Frisbee.

    A Brief History of Golf
    How the Game Evolved
There is general agreement that the Scots were the earliest of golf addicts but who actually invented the game is open to debate. We know that golf has existed for at least 500 years because James II of Scotland, in an Act of Parliament dated March 6, 1457, had golf and football banned because these sports were interfering too much with archery practice sorely needed by the loyal defenders of the Scottish realm! It has been suggested that bored shepherds tending flocks of sheep near St. Andrews became adept at hitting rounded stones into rabbits holes with their wooden crooks. And so a legend that persists to this day was born! Various forms of games resembling golf were played as early as the fourteenth century by sportsmen in Holland, Belgium and France as well as in Scotland. But it was a keen Scottish Baron, James VI, who brought the game to England when he succeeded to the English throne in 1603. For many years the game was played on rough terrain without proper greens, just crude holes cut into the ground where the surface was reasonably flat!
    Early Golf Organizations
Early golfers played at the game for many years without any thought of forming a society or club until finally a group of Edinburgh golfers in 1744 formed a club called the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers . At this time, the first rules of golf, 13 in all, were drawn up for an annual competition between sportsmen from any part of Great Britain and Ireland. A few years later the Society of St Andrews Golfers was formed and in 1834, when King William IV became the Society's patron, the title was changed to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.

The Nova Scotia Golf Association is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2010 Murray Purcell Bursary Programs
The 2010 winners of the Murray Purcell Bursary Program originate from all regions of the province. This year the NSGA received 24 bursary applications from around Nova Scotia and 8 student golfers have been awarded a total of $15,000.00. The NSGA Bursary program was created to help Nova Scotian Golfers with the increasing cost of post secondary education. This endowment program was renamed in 2007 in memory of the late Murray Purcell. Mr. Purcell worked with the NSGA for over 15 years and was instrumental in creating many of the programs that exist today, including the bursary program.
