Golf History
Everyone knows golf originated in Scotland, right?
Well ... yes and no.
It's definitely true that golf as we know it emerged in Scotland. The Scots were playing golf in its very basic form - take a club, swing it at a ball, move ball from starting point to finishing hole in as few strokes as possible - by at least the mid-15th Century.
Interesting enough, the earliest known reference to golf comes from King James II of Scotland, who, in 1457, issued a ban on the playing of golf and football (errr... soccer). Those games, King James complained, were keeping his archers from their practice. After that, James III in 1471 and James IV in 1491 each re-issued the ban on golf.
But the game continued to develop in Scotland over the decades and centuries, until 1744 when the first known rules of golf were written in Edinburgh. Golf as it was then played would be easily recognized by any modern golfer.
So can it be said that the Scots "invented" golf? Not quite, because there's strong evidence that the Scots were influenced themselves by even earlier versions of games of similar nature.
USGA Museum about the issue: "While many Scots firmly maintain that golf evolved from a family of stick-and-ball games widely practiced throughout the British Isles during the Middle Ages, considerable evidence suggests that the game derived from stick-and-ball games that were played in France, Germany and the Low Countries."

COLLEGE SPORTS SAFE SEARCH The origins of and information about golf The Early Romans played a game very similar like golf by hitting a feather-stuffed ball with club-shaped tree branches. Pictures in books also show the Dutch playing a similar type of game on their frozen canals during the 1500's. Cross-country versions of the game were also popular in France and Belgium. It is interesting to note that even though Scotland is the father and mother of the game of golf, it was also banned there for a time. this ban was in place during the middle part of the fifteenth Century when Scotland was preparing to defend itself against an English invasion. History tells us that many people in Scotland became so obsessed with golf that they neglected the military training that would be required if the English were to be driven back so the Scottish Parliament of James II quite literally banned the game. Although the ban was reintroduced in 1470 and 1491 its popularity continued to grow - the Scots simply ignored the ban
Scotland is the home of the world's oldest golf course, St. Andrews, which was used as early as the sixteenth century.

Posted October 25, 2010 12:33:00 The 17-year-old Matteo Manassero picked up a first prize of $466,000. (Getty Images: Stuart Franklin) Italy's Matteo Manassero, 17, has become the European Tour's youngest winner, capturing the Castello Masters title by four shots in Valencia. The previous youngest Tour winner was New Zealand's Danny Lee, who was 18 when he triumphed at the Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth in February 2009. Manassero, aged just 17 years and 188 days, started the final round two shots behind leader Gary Boyd but a red-hot homeward nine and a collapse by the Briton set up victory for the teenager. He closed with a 4-under 67 for a 16-under total of 268 to win comfortably from Spain's Ignacio Garrido (68) whose late spurt earned second place. "It feels fantastic, I've always worked for this moment and I've finally done it," Manassero told Sky Sports.

Timeline Of Golf History, 1353 - 2003
The first recorded reference to chole, the probable antecedent of golf. It is a derivative of hockey played in Flanders (Belgium). A Scottish regiment aiding the French against the English at the Siege of Bauge is introduced to the game of chole. Hugh Kennedy, Robert Stewart and John Smale, three of the identified players, are credited with introducing the game in Scotland. Golf, along with football, is banned by the Scots Parliament of James II because it has interfered with military training for the wars against the English. The ban on golf is reaffirmed by the Parliament of James III. The golf ban is affirmed again by Parliament, this time under King James IV. With the signing of the Treaty of Glasgow between England and Scotland, the ban on golf is lifted. James IV makes the first recorded purchase of golf equipment, a set of clubs from a bow-maker in Perth, Scotland. Queen Catherine of England, in a letter to Cardinal Wolsey, refers to the growing popularity of golf in England. The first commoner recorded as a golfer is Sir Robert Maule, described as playing on Barry Links (near the modern-day Carnoustie).

Palmer, Player, Nicklaus, Watson, Faldo and Woods. PRE 1400: THE ORIGINS OF THE GAME Throughout recorded history, every civilisation has played a game with a club and a ball. Pangea for example, as described by Roman scribes, would appear to be the father both of modern hockey and the Celtic games of Shinty and Hurling. In one form or another, the variant games of present day golf were clearly enjoyed throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. The game persisted over the centuries and the form that it took and rules that were applied varied as widely as the terrain the game was played over. In short, the game consisted of knocking a ball from one pre-designated place to another where the ball was to be struck off a predetermined object in the least number of blows. Games often extended from village to village.

Golf History
Golf is a very ancient sport that has been around more than 900 years. Its exact country of origin is unknown but the most commonly accepted theory is that it came from Scotland in the 1100's. A game somewhat similar to golf was recorded by the Chinese in the 11th century. Also, a game where players hit a leather ball with a stick was recorded in the Netherlands in the year 1297. Modern golf is believed to be an entirely Scottish tradition. This is because the rules for a game called golf were mentioned in the 15th century. A game of putting a small ball into holes in the ground was played in the Netherlands in the 17th century. The oldest playing golf course in the world is The Musselburgh Old Links Golf Course. Evidence shows that golf was played here as early as 1672. Golf courses as we know in modern times have not always been 18 holes. In fact, one of the most esteemed golf courses, St. Andrews in Fife was originally 22 holes. However, some of the holes were found much too short for actual play and were cut out of the course. This made the number of holes 18 which every game of golf is judged by today.

The Romans during the reign of Caesar played a game resembling golf by striking a feather-stuffed ball with club-shaped branches. Book illustrations show the Dutch playing a similar game on their frozen canals around the 15th century. Cross-country variations became popular in France and Belgium. Golf became firmly established in Great Britain by the 17th century when James VI of Scotland, later James I of England, was attracted to the sport. In 1860 the first British Open was played at Prestwick, Scotland. The competition was opened to both professionals and amateurs the following year. The first permanent golf club in North America, Canada`s Royal Montreal Club, was founded in 1873. St. Andrews, one of the oldest golf clubs in the United States, was established as a 3-hole layout in 1888 at Yonkers, New York. During the next few years numerous 6, 8, 9, and 12-hole courses were opened in the East. The first 18-hole course in the United States, the Chicago Golf Club, was founded near Wheaton, Illinois in 1893. George S. May, the founder of the company, played a major role in popularizing the game of golf. In the 1940s and 1950s he was the preeminent golf promoter in the world, staging a number of annual tournaments at his country club, Tam O'Shanter, located in Niles, Ill. While George S. May was a golfer, he became more interested in the business behind the game, not just the playing of the game. Mr. May became known for his keen business insights, promotional flair, innovative ideas and vision for the future of golf. Among his honors is the fact that George S. May is listed as one of Golf magazine's 100 Heroes of American Golf. The book "Chicago Golf: The First 100 Years" by Tom Govedarica includes a chapter entitled: The George S. May Decade: 1951-1960. Mr. May was inducted into the Illinois Professional Golfer's Association (PGA) Hall of Fame on October 9, 1992. His award plaque reads: Illinois Professional Golf Association Hall of Fame Award Citation Honoring Mr. George S. May Many of today's standard procedures regarding tournament golf on the PGA Tour are the result of the many innovations made by George S. May. From 1941 to 1958, May played host to the game's greatest players for the 10 days each year at his Tam O'Shanter Country Club in Niles, Ill.
