Cereal grains are grown in greater quantities and provide more food energy worldwide than any other type of crop; they are therefore staple crops . Grain is both a fruit and a vegetable. In their natural form (as in whole grain ), they are a rich source of vitamins minerals carbohydrates fats , oils, and protein . However, when refined by the removal of the bran and germ , the remaining endosperm is mostly carbohydrate and lacks the majority of the other nutrients. Alternative Grain Crops
Organic farms must have diverse crop rotations. To achieve a rotation of more than two years, crops other than corn and soybeans (or soybeans-wheat double crop) should be considered. This page is intended to be a resource for farmers interested in expanding their rotation to include some grain crops that are in demand in North Carolina and in the eastern US. Sunflower Seed Organic sunflower seed is used in bird feed, for sunflower oil and the meal for livestock feed. Sunflowers are a summer annual crop that can be managed similar to other summer grain crops. The links from this page lead to production information for sunflower seed, though not necessarily organic sunflower seed production. There is no information available on organic sunflower production in North Carolina, so adjustments to the management systems recommended must be made to fit in a certified organic operation. Buckwheat Buckwheat is a summer annual broadleaf grain, and is used to produce food-grade flour and sometimes livestock feed. It thrives in cooler climatic conditions, but is not frost-tolerant. Buckwheat is fast growing and is probably best planted for production in early summer (after the last frost) or in late summer (about 8-10 weeks before the first frost) in North Carolina, although it can be grown anytime in the summer. The links from this page lead to production and marketing information for buckwheat. There is little information available on organic buckwheat production in the southeast, so adjustments to the management systems recommended must be made to fit NC's climate and into a certified organic operation.

One of the Driest Years Ever in Kentucky
Tom Priddy, University of Kentucky Ag Weather Center
According to preliminary data, since August 1st through November 9, the state has only received 6.10 inches of rain, which is over 5 inches below normal. Some west and west-central locations are 9 to 10 inches below normal for that time period.
Here's the latest map of US Drought Monitor for Kentucky: http://www.drought.unl.edu/dm/DM_state.htm?KY,MW
Rank Value* Year * Value is total rainfall (inches) between August and November.
Two rainfall events are in the forecast...Saturday, November 13, 2010 and again late Monday/Tuesday. The latest models indicate the Saturday event is weak and falling apart. Tuesday's event looks very promising. Also, the winter outlook is calling for above normal rainfall for Kentucky: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/long_range/seasonal.php?lead=02

  • Fig. 1 Two hundred years ago, grasslands occupied major portions of the North American continent. These native grasslands have been classified into seven major associations based on climax vegetation (Gould 1968). The two largest grassland associations, the true or tall grass prairie and the mixed-shortgrass prairie, covered major areas of the Midwest and Great Plains of the United States and the prairie provinces of Canada. Except for the desert plains grassland association, these grasslands have been converted into major grain crop production areas of the United States and Canada. Although much of this grassland area has been plowed for crop production, relict prairie sites exist throughout the area and can be used as a germplasm base for the native prairie grasses. The North American grasslands contained hundreds of species of plants (Gould 1968; Weaver 1954). Sunflower (

The main connector for all towns is now the Mallee Highway, but previously it was the railway corridor which saw grain produced from fertile Mallee soils capable of being shipped out of the district prior to road freight becoming the predominant way to shift fresh produce.
We have 336,000 hectares of conservation parks that provide walking trails, native birds, wildflowers, camping and rest facilities and four wheel drive tracks. (For more information, go to the Tourism link)

    Grain crops recover from floods
By Laura Poole from Glenorchy 3385 Tuesday, 05/10/2010 Crop stubble snagged on fence lines is one of the few signs there have been floods. It's already a month since crops near rivers right across Victoria were underwater. At the time farmers thought the worst. There was nothing they could do, and they were adding up the damage bill. But now floodwaters have receded, they've been pleasantly surprised. Banyena farmer Don McAllister had about 700 acres submerged when the Richardson River broke its banks in western Victoria. He prepared for the worst. "In hindsight, you do get a feeling of despair." The water engulfed Mr McAllister's crops for about one week. "The cereals and canola have handled it pretty well really. "They've jumped back and look excellent." The river has left behind some damage in grain paddocks. "Low lying areas where the river has broken through and created a river of its own there's a lot of dead crop but nowhere near as wide as I thought it would be." Mr McAllister says legumes, lentils and kaspa peas, have suffered the most.

    I. History:
    Annual Canarygrass ( Phalaris canariensis
    II. Uses:
The primary market for canarygrass is currently birdfeed, but other uses, including human food have been proposed. As a birdfood, the florets are sold and the birds dehull the florets before consumption. It is widely recognized as a superior canary-feed. Annual Canarygrass seed is similar to oat in mineral composition. The caryopsis is higher in ash, oil, and phosphorus but lower in fiber than concentrations common in corn, pea, or fieldbean. Canarygrass caryopses have higher concentrations of all eight essential amino acids than does wheat or corn, and are higher in sulfur-containing amino acids than pea or fieldbean. In spite of this encouraging nutritional profile, the value of canarygrass in human food has not been adequately explored.
