Grammar – Conjunctions By Stuart Ackerman
Conjunctions connect words or parts of sentences. It is important for students to learn how to properly use conjunctions in their writing. Conjunctions contribute to the flow (i.e. the readability) of sentences. There are 3 main types of conjunctions: coordinating correlative , and subordinating
Coordinating Conjunctions

Coordinating conjunctions connect equal parts of sentences. That is, they connect words to words, phrases to phrases, and clauses to clauses.
For example:
John and David went to the soccer game. ( noun to noun)
John spent the day practicing soccer and doing his homework . (phrase to phrase)
David didn't like baseball so he decided to play soccer instead . (clause to clause)
Some coordinating conjunctions are: and, or, but, for, so, nor, yet.
Correlative Conjunctions Correlative conjunctions also connect equal parts together. Correlative conjunctions come in pairs and work together For example: Either David or John would play forward. John wanted to play both forward and defence.

I. Conjunctions
A conjunction is a word that connects words or groups of words to each other. Here are some common conjunctions: and, or, but, so
These words are called coordinating conjunctions because they connect equal parts of a sentence.
When you want to join words or phrases together, use the conjunction and

English Grammar 101: Conjunctions
by Maeve Maddox A conjunction joins words and groups of words. There are two classes of conjunction: co-ordinate or coordinating and subordinate or subordinating Co-ordinate conjunction s: Subordinate conjunctions that, as, after, before, since, when, where, unless, if Mother and Father are driving me to New Orleans and is a coordinate conjunction joining words of equal significance in the sentence. I painted the walls but Jack painted the woodwork. but is a coordinate conjunction joining clauses of equal significance in the sentence. Either clause could stand alone as a sentence.)
Since is a subordinate conjunction joining a less important thought to a more important thought. The main clause, , can stand alone as a complete thought. The subordinate clause, , is an incomplete thought. It is dependent upon the main clause for meaning.) NOTE : The relative pronouns who, whom, which , and that are used in the same way that subordinate conjunctions are. The difference is that the relative pronouns serve three purposes at once: 1) they stand for a noun in the main clause
2) they connect the clauses
3) they serve as a subject or object word in the subordinate clause: He is the man who invented the hula hoop.

CONJUNCTIONS There are two types of conjunctions, coordinating and subordinating
A. Coordinating Conjunctions
  • Coordinating conjunctions coordinate clauses of the same type (two or more main clauses or two or more dependent clauses). denn, aber, sondern are normally preceded by a comma, and followed by subject and then the verb. Other than that there is no special word-order rule; the basic rules apply
  • The most common coordinating conjunctions are: und
    oder
    denn
    aber

    sondern
    and
    or
    for, because
    but

    but (instead)
    Beispiele
  • Wir kommen nicht heute, sondern morgen. Machst du das oder machst du das nicht? Er hat mir gesagt, er Savannah besucht hat und dort zu River Street gegangen ist
This example shows the coordination of subordinate (dependent) clauses: und coordinates the two dependent clauses; the auxiliary verbs ( hat ist ) are at the end of the respective clause. Both clauses are dependent on the main clause; applies to both.
  • B. Subordinating Conjunctions
  • Subordinating conjunctions introduce a subordinate (dependent) clause A dependent clause is one that requires an independent (main) clause to be fully understood.

    Grammar - CONJUNCTIONS
CONJUNCTIONS According to our textbook*, "A CONJUNCTION is a word used to connect words, phrases, or sentences. There are three kinds of conjunctions: COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTIONS The Language of Literature: American Literature (2006), page 1314 COORDINATING CONJUCTIONS connect words or word groups that have the same function in a sentence: and / but / or / for / so / yet / nor Coordinating conjunctions can join nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositional phrases, and clauses in a sentence. Examples: 2 noun objects = I have many friends but few enemies 2 prepositional phrases = We ran out the door and into the street 2 predicates (with predicate adj) = They are pleasant yet seem aloof 2 clauses = We have to go now or we will be late CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTIONS are similar to coordinating conjunctions. However, correlative conjunctions are always used in pairs. Examples: Both Tom and Mary are planning to go. Either Tom or Mary is planning to leave.

Filed in English Grammar Conjunctions are words that join other words or clauses together.
    • God made the country and man made the town. He was poor but he was honest. She must weep or she will die. John and Mary got married.
Conjunctions not only join clauses together; they also show how the meanings of the two clauses are related.
    • I decided to consult a doctor because I was not feeling well. (cause) He is slow but he is sure. (contrast) Ann wrote the letters and Peter posted them. (addition) Either take it or leave it. (alternative) He is very wealthy, yet very unhappy. (contrast) You can have tea or coffee.
A conjunction and its clause can sometimes stand alone. This happens, for example, in answers.
    • When are you going to start? When I am ready. Why are you crying? Because John beat me.
