Extension Entomologist Grasshoppers are among the most widespread and damaging pests in Texas. Approximately 150 species of grasshoppers are known to exist in the state; however, the following five species cause 90 percent of the damage to crops, gardens, trees and shrubs: Differential grasshopper, Melanoplus differentalis . Adults are 1 1/8 to 1 3/4 inches long. Black chevron markings on the hind femur help identify this grasshopper. Black individuals may occur. Moving in from weedy borders, they are very destructive in cultivated crops. They are seldom found in grassland. Red-legged grasshopper, Melanoplus femurrubrum . Adults are 7/8 to 1 1/4 inches long. The hind tibia are red. They are especially damaging to alfalfa and other legumes, but can be an important pest in other crops. They are of very little importance in grassland. Migratory grasshopper

      Grasshoppers
Goggy Davidowitz Observant hikers in the Sonoran Desert soon notice grasshoppers jumping near their feet or flitting between bushes and cacti. These are among the most frequently encountered and easily observed of the Sonoran Desert insects in the late summer. Grasshoppers have a fairly simple body design. The rounded head capsule contains the compound eyes, chewing mouth parts, and the short thread-like antennae, which are always shorter than the body (hence the name “short-horned” grasshoppers, in contrast to another suborder, the katydids or “long-horned” grasshoppers). The middle thoracic segments and part of the abdomen are covered by a shield-like pronotum that extends from the first thoracic segment. The forewings are leathery and not used for flight. Instead they protect the delicate hind wings, which are folded accordion-like beneath the forewings until they are unfolded for flight. However, all immature stages and the adults of many species lack wings altogether and cannot fly. The most noticeable feature of grasshoppers is their long, jumping hind legs, which enable them to leap well over 20 times their body length (imagine a 6-foot tall person jumping 120 feet!). However, while the powerful jumping muscles of the hind legs provide the force necessary for leaping, they cannot propel the grasshopper in these impressive leaps unaided. Most of the kinetic energy to do this comes not from the muscles, but from the semilunar crescent located in the knee of the hind leg. This crescent-shaped organ is made of elastic fibers that store energy in preparation for a jump; they release this energy explosively, propelling the grasshopper forward many times its body length.

Grasshoppers
Hosts : Most green plant material. Symptoms : Ragged leaf feeding (defoliation ) often beginning on field margins early in the season. More pronounced in dry years. Grasshoppers are most likely to damage wheat in the fall. They eat leaves and stems as they emerge from the ground. They typically move in to field margins, which suffer greatest damage. In late spring and early summer, they may climb stalks and chew on kernels causing damage that resembles granary weevil feeding. They can also clip heads like armyworms. Control : Please contact your local county extension office for current information. Return to Main page

Grasshoppers are insects that can hop, walk, and fly. Many male grasshoppers make noise by rubbing their back legs together. There are about 10,000 different species of grasshoppers. Metamorphosis : Grasshoppers undergo simple (or incomplete) metamorphosis; eggs hatch into nymphs, which look like little adults without wings and reproductive organs. Nymphs molt many times as they grow to be adults. Anatomy : Like all insects, the grasshoppers have a three-part body (head, thorax and abdomen), six jointed legs, two pairs of wings, and two antennae. Their body is covered with a hard exoskeleton. Grasshoppers breathe through a series of holes called spiracles; they are located along the sides of the body. Most grasshoppers are green, brown, or olive-green. The biggest ones are about 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) long.

    How to Manage Pests
    Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
    Grasshoppers
Published In this Guideline: Grasshoppers are sporadic pests in gardens. However, in some years large populations may build up in foothills and rangelands, especially after a wet spring and then migrate into nearby gardens, often defoliating everything in sight. Over 200 species of grasshoppers occur in California, but only a few of these cause significant problems in gardens. The devastating grasshopper Melanoplus devastator, and the valley grasshopper, Oedaleonotus enigma, are the most widespread and destructive.
    IDENTIFICATION AND LIFE CYCLE
Grasshoppers are readily distinguished from most other insects. Their hind legs, with greatly enlarged femurs, are well adapted for jumping. Their bodies are robust and their antennae relatively short. In contrast, two other common garden pests in the order Orthoptera, crickets and katydids, have long antennae. Most grasshoppers are winged and many are good flyers, although a few species are flightless.

due to their short antennae. They are different from locusts in that locusts change their color and their behavior during high levels of population while grasshoppers do not exhibit these behaviors.
Grasshopper Identification The antennae on a grasshopper is shorter than the rest of its body. Long hind legs are give grasshoppers their great leaping ability. Grasshoppers have wings but their front wings are not used for flight. Females are identified by their size (they are larger than the males) and by the presence of short ovipositors.
Some species of grasshoppers rub their hind legs against their forewings or abdomen to make noise. They also create sounds by snapping their wings together when in flight. Some species of grasshopper have a tympana, a hearing

Acrididae, ORTHOPTERA
DESCRIPTION (several species)
Adult - Full-grown grasshoppers range in length from 19 to 38 mm. The differential grasshopper is basically brownish-yellow or olive green with contrasting black markings. On the hind femur, these markings resemble chevrons. The redlegged grasshopper has a reddish-brown back, a yellow belly, and bright red hind legs. The twostriped grasshopper is greenish-yellow with contrasting black or brown markings. It has two light color stripes which run from the head to the tips of the wings. Color plate Egg - Grasshopper eggs occur in oval, elongate or curved pods made out of soil particles. Often the size of kernels of rice, eggs may be white, yellow green, tan, or various shades of brown. Nymph - Newly hatched nymphs are white. However, after several hours of exposure to sunlight, they assume the distinctive colors and markings of adults.
BIOLOGY
Distribution - Grasshoppers occur throughout the continental United States. Extensive grasshopper damage, however, is confined primarily to subhumid, semiarid areas of the country from Montana and Minnesota southward into New Mexico and Texas. The differential grasshopper is most injurious in the Great Plains, upper Mississippi Valley, and southern states. The redlegged grasshopper prefers areas of low, moist soil. The twostriped grasshopper is common throughout North America.

Grasshoppers
In Colorado there are several species of grasshoppers, but 90 percent of damage to plants is caused by grasshoppers in the genus Melanoplus. Females of one species in the genus can lay up to 400 eggs in a single season, depending on the weather. Fewer eggs are produced in cooler and wetter weather. Some grasshoppers prefer one food source, such as corn or alfalfa, but when food is scarce they eat a variety of plants, shrubs and trees. A grasshopper will eat its own weight in green food in about 16 hours. In fact, seven grasshoppers per square yard over 10 acres will eat the same ration as one cow. Grasshoppers have several natural enemies including birds, rodents, spiders, skunks, several species of flies and horsehair worms. Horsehair worms are long and whitish and live inside a grasshopper. As they feed on their living host, they cause sterility in female grasshoppers. When the worms complete their growth inside the grasshopper, they kill the insect by forcing their way through the body wall. Grasshoppers ingest hair worms when they eat leaves where hair worm females have laid eggs. There are several insecticides that control grasshoppers. Carbaryl, sold as Sevin, and Malathion can be used as a spray. A granular formulation of Sevin can also be used as a bait. A microbial insecticide called

Life Cycle
Figure 1. Grasshopper life cycle. Grasshopper eggs are laid beneath the soil surface in pod-like structures that the female deposits from her abdomen. Each egg pod consists of 20 to 120 elongated eggs securely cemented together; the whole mass is somewhat eggshaped and covered with soil. A female grasshopper produces from eight to 25 egg masses. The species of grasshoppers that cause major crop loss overwinter in the egg stage, although a few other noneconomic species overwinter as nymphs. In the Northern Plains, grasshopper egg hatch normally begins in late April to early May. The peak hatch occurs about mid June and the hatch is usually nearing completion by late June. Cool and extremely dry springs may delay the hatch, allowing it to continue into July.

Grasshoppers As summer heats up the extension office is receiving a growing number of inquiries about grasshoppers and the damage they are doing to gardens and agriculture. Infestations are spotty around the county but if you are in an area where a population explosion is occurring damage can be considerable. Here is some basic information and some web site links with more detailed information. The following information is from http://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/PDF/grasshopper.pdf Life Cycle
There are three stages in a grasshopper's life cycle, the egg, nymph (the young grasshopper), and the adult. Most grasshopper species over-winter as eggs, which are laid in clusters in late summer and early fall and hatch in spring, when soil temperatures warm up. Although grasshoppers are difficult to control, their impact can be minimized by preventive management over the long term.
