(FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE NORTH EAST BRANCH OF THE WESLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY)
The Wesley Historical Society was founded in 1893 "to promote the study of the history and literature of early Methodism"
The North East of England branch of the WHS was founded in 1962 to provide a forum for those interested in Methodist history in a more regional setting. Other local Methodist groups serve most parts of the British Isles in a similar way.
The Society aims to encourage an informed interest in the life and work of John and Charles Wesley, in Methodist history in general, in chapels and their architecture, and in the broader patterns of English religious history, especially in the counties of Northumberland, Durham and Cleveland.
Spring and Autumn lectures are held each year in various venues throughout the north east, and there is an outing in the summer months. Non-members are welcome.
A substantial Bulletin (free to members) is published each March and October, containing articles, information, book reviews and reports on society activities. Non members may obtain copies, priced £2 including postage, on request.

8. British History
An illustrated introduction for tourists from Great Britain UK Information Guide, divided into time periods from the stone age to the 20th century.

British History
The British Isles have a rich history going back thousands of years. Unfortunately few of us in Britain really know much about our history. Retrospectively I think there must have been something radically flawed with history as it is taught in out schools as our history is fascinating. For this history guide, we shall divide the period of British history into four main chunks, and each of these four main chunks then subdivided into bite sized chapters that try to explain the way that things happened History is an interweaving of events and people, and its not just about kings and queens, its about ordinary people and how events influenced them, and on occasions how they influenced events. Also one has to realise that Britain is not one nation, but a hodge podge of different peoples who tend to remain distinct in spite of a millenium or more of intermarriage. I have therefore put in separate chapters on Ireland, Scotland and Wales, each with its own history

In factories, mills, and mines, workers suffered long hours and often dangerous working conditions. Work-related illnesses were common (though they were never labelled as such) and for many, life offered little in the way of material comfort. Nevertheless, in towns and villages throughout Great Britain, ordinary working men, women and children would often gather in Methodist chapels to join in joyful hymns, fervent prayers, lively preaching and careful study. Englesea Brook Chapel and Museum is a place where you can explore the story of working-class religion in the nineteenth century particularly as it was experienced by a group called the Primitive Methodists. You can discover the origins of Primitive Methodism in a traditional magic lantern show, explore the values of Victorian people through our collection of religious banners, musical instruments and other artefacts, meet some nineteenth century women who defied the boundaries of gender and took to the pulpit and much more besides.

Welcome to Epworth Old Rectory. A visit to this impressive grade 1 listed Queen Anne building set in beautiful gardens will transport you back into early 18th century life and introduce you to the remarkable family who lived here. This is the home in which the rector of Epworth, Samuel Wesley, and his wife Susanna brought up their sons John and Charles Wesley (the founders of Methodism) in their childhood years. As you tour the Old Rectory under the guidance of one of our trained staff you will see how people lived in the early 1700s: come through the front door into the impressive entrance hall, visit Samuel's study and Susanna's kitchen, enjoy the space of the family drawing room, see the family bedrooms and then spend some time in the peaceful gardens. The history of 18th century England will be brought to life, and you will learn about the huge influence the Wesleys had on it. John was not only a preacher and writer, but was active in many social spheres ranging from prisons to slavery, from education to herbal medicines. His brother Charles was the greatest of English hymn writers, many of whose 7,000 hymns are still popular today. There's plenty for all the family at Epworth, so step back in history and experience the gentle tranquillity of this Lincolnshire town and its Old Rectory which brought to birth such an amazing family.
