Who were the Ancient Greeks?
Information on ancient Greece and the ancient Greeks The earliest Greek civilizations thrived nearly 4,000 years ago. The Ancient Greeks lived in Greece and the countries that we now call Bulgaria and Turkey. The Ancient Greece empire spread over Europe as far as France in the East. The Greek Empire was most powerful between 2000 BC and 146 BC
The ancient Greeks developed new ideas for government, science, philosophy, religion, and art. Ancient Greece was split into many different states, each one was ruled in its own way. Each state had its own laws, government and money but they shared the same language and religion . The two most important city states were Athens and Sparta Legacy of the Ancient Greeks - (How Ancient Greece influenced modern day culture.) The influence of the Ancient Greeks are still felt by us today. The major impact in our lives today are in the arts, in philosophy, and in science, math, literature and politics.

Sorry, I just took a moment to remember how great my vacation to Lefkada was and I drifted a little. It's been twenty years since then but I still recall it like it was yesterday. It was July and it was with my family, Rena (my brother's girlfriend at the time) and Hope, one of my best friends. My parents have a habit that they've passed on to me: whenever they travel to a place they've never been before, they buy a book about it and finish it before they leave. Well, it may not seem weird to you, but most Greeks don't do that when they travel inside the country. For example, when an Athenian goes to Crete, they won't buy a book about it, mostly because it's still Greece so they don't realize there are things to see. But my parents always bought books, which is why they have a big library full of them, among other things. Anyway, I got that from them early on, which is why I read a couple of things about Lefkada before we left. One thing that I never forgot is how the book said that my first impression would leave me disappointed but later I'd realize how beautiful the island is. The island is indeed beautiful, but I was expecting to see something that would throw me off, because of what the book said. Guess what? I loved it from the very first instant. Now I don't know what the book meant by that but I'm repeating it even though I don't really agree with it because you might get that feeling it described and I don't want to risk it.

The Life and Work of Homer:
Homer was the most important and earliest of the Greek and Roman writers. Greeks and Romans didn't count themselves educated unless they knew his poems. His influence was felt not only on literature, but on ethics and morality via lessons from his masterpieces. He is the first place to look for information on Greek myth and religion. Yet, despite Homer's prominence, we have no firm evidence that he ever lived.
    Quote About Homer:
Homer and Hesiod have ascribed to the gods all things that are a shame and a disgrace among mortals, stealing and adulteries and deceiving on one another.

The Life of the Blind Bard:
Because Homer performed and sang he is called a bard. He is thought to have been blind, and so is known as the blind bard, just as Shakespeare, calling on the same tradition, is known as the bard of Avon. History of Greece Museums in Greece Lifestyle of Greeks ... Peloponnesian War Economy and Society In Classical Greece The economic and social structure of classical Greece, including the colonies it sent out around the Mediterranean, had many features in common with other agricultural civilizations. It particularly resembled other civilizations in which an invading, warlike group settled down to agriculture. Thus, while 8th-century Greece depended clearly on farming, it had an aristocracy based on ownership of large estates and special claims to military service. At the same time many farmers were independent, owning their plots of land and claiming some political and social status just as tribal soldiers had once done. But - again in a common pattern - the Greek economy evolved, particularly as trade rose and cities grew. Social structure became accordingly more complex, and inequalities widened in many ways.

Ithaca History, Greece: Information about the history of Ithaca, Ionian
Ithaca has been inhabited since the prehistoric times, as the other islands of the Ionians. Proofs of an early life in ancient Ithaca are provided by the shards found at Pilikata, with inscription in Linear A, writing dating back to prehistoric times. In 1479, the Turks took the command of Ithaca by force, killing its inhabitants and destroying the villages. Most of the inhabitants of the island left their homeland fearing the Turkish occupiers. Those who stayed hid in the mountains. In 1807, according to an agreement with Turkey, the Ionian Islands returned under the rule of the French, who prepared to face the powerful English fleet by fortifying the town and capital of Vathy.
All seven Ionian Islands have the same rich history, mostly due to their location on the trade and invasion routes to and from the Balkans, Italy and the Levant.
The island of Ithaca met its greatest glory around 1000 BC, when the kingdom of Ithaca was constituted by all the Ionian Islands and a part of the coast of Acarnania, in the mainland of Greece.
