The Best Ancient Greek Sites
Five thousand years of history have obviously left a mark on the Greek landscape. Many ancient Greek monuments, cities, and landmarks have traveled through the eons under the sun and some have even remained in use (like the Acropolis for instance), while many others fell into obscurity and were buried under the ground only to be unearthed by archaeologist in the past two hundred years. Such ancient sites appear today as monuments to the Greek ideas and culture that influenced the subsequent generations of the western civilization. For those brought up immersed in the western civilization, to study the ancient Greek monuments is to study one's own heritage and self. Many visitors have made it a point to return to Greece year after year to enjoy the sun, the culture, and to study the ancient monuments. For those, Greece has unlimited resources to offer. Thousands of ancient sites, large and small, await to be seen, and unknown numbers await for the archaeologists' brush to uncover them. But for those visitors who plan only one trip to Greece what should they see? What ancient sites should they visit?

Enlargements: THERE'S A good reason we haven't heard about this epic discovery in the New York Times Scientific American , or any other legitimate publication, and that is that these photos, like the one circulating since 2004 purporting to show a giant skeleton found in the Middle East, are fakes. As if it weren't preposterous enough to claim that one 15-foot-tall fossilized human skeleton had turned up without media fanfare, we're asked to believe that archaeologists recently dug up four of them in a single location (Greece). In point of fact, each of the photos appears to have been taken at a different time and place. So far I've only been able to locate the original of one of them, but it serves as clear proof that Photoshopping took place. Image #4 was created by inserting an outsized human skull into a photo of a 1993 University of Chicago dinosaur dig in Niger, Africa (see the original

    for National Geographic News
December 14, 2007 The National Geographic Society has not discovered ancient giant humans, despite rampant reports and pictures. (Photo Gallery: "Giant Skeletons" Fuel Web Hoax) By 2004 the "discovery" was being blogged and emailed all over the world—"Giant Skeleton Unearthed!"—and it's been enjoying a revival in 2007. The photo fakery might be obvious to most people. But the tall tale refuses to lie down even five years later, if a continuing flow of emails to National Geographic News are any indication. (The National Geographic Society owns National Geographic News.) Perpetuating the Myth Helping to fuel the story's recent resurgence are a smattering of media outlets that have reported the find as fact. An often cited March 2007 article in India's Hindu Voice monthly, for example, claimed that a National Geographic Society team, in collaboration with the Indian Army, had dug up a giant human skeleton in India. "Recent exploration activity in the northern region of India uncovered a skeletal remains of a human of phenomenal size," the report read.

    http://history-world.org/archeology.htm
Archeology The International History Project Date:2003 Archeology is the scientific study of past human culture and behavior, from the origins of humans to the present. Archaeology studies past human behavior through the examination of material remains of previous human societies. These remains include the fossils (preserved bones) of humans, food remains, the ruins of buildings, and human artifacts—items such as tools, pottery, and jewelry. From their studies, archaeologists attempt to reconstruct past ways of life. Archaeology is an important field of anthropology, which is the broad study of human culture and biology. Archaeologists concentrate their studies on past societies and changes in those societies over extremely long periods of time. popups must be enabled or IE users press and hold the control key while clicking With its focus on the ancient past, archaeology somewhat resembles paleontology—the study of fossils of long-extinct animals, such as dinosaurs. However, archaeology is distinct from paleontology and studies only past human life. Archaeology also examines many of the same topics explored by historians. But unlike history—the study of written records such as government archives, personal correspondence, and business documents—most of the information gathered in archaeology comes from the study of objects lying on or under the ground Archaeologists refer to the vast store of information about the human past as the archaeological record. The archeological record encompasses every area of the world that has ever been occupied by humans, as well as all of the material remains contained in those areas. Archaeologists study the archaeological record through field surveys and excavations and through the laboratory study of collected materials.

iants! The very stuff of myth and legend, giants live in the gray area between myth and history, flitting about on the periphery of human memory like the shades of departed spirits. Like the mysterious sea serpents However, this was not always the case. Prominent references in the Bible and numerous other religious and historical texts from around the world make prominent mention of a time in mankind's distant past wherein giants walked the Earth. At one time the belief in giants was as prevalent as the belief in angels, but now the belief in things unusual and supernatural in general seems to be increasingly falling prey to the relentless onslaught of the modern age of rationalism and almighty science. It appears it is now up to these shadowy beings to make themselves known once more, or else disappear forever into the ranks of myth and legend. Ironically, it may be science, that implacable enemy of myth, that may resurrect the very giants whose existence it had sought in vain to erase from the memory of man.

    Chili Peppers and Southwestern Cuisine
Friday November 12, 2010 When you think of the American southwest, you instantly think of chili peppers: chili rellenos and huevos rancheros, yum! But archaeologists have long been aware that the people of the American southwest didn't use chili peppers in their recipes until after the Spanish colonization in the 16th century AD.
Santa Fe Chili Peppers. Photo by Mr T in DC Now, chili peppers are an American domesticate: they were domesticated in both south and central America some 6000 years ago. And other American domesticated cropscorn, beans, squash and cotton, for examplebecame important parts of Southwestern Pueblo life long before the Spanish came. But not chili peppers. Read what researchers Paul Minnis and Michael Whalen believe convinced the people of southwestern United States and northern Mexico to add chili peppers to their cuisines, an essential part of the
