These also inspired artists to depict them on pots and other surfaces. The national product of Greece is olive oil, citrus fruit, nuts and feta cheese. The economy of the country is mainly based on tourism, which is a very important income source especially during the summer months. Mountainous areas are filled with numerous small villages but the population there is on the decline, in contrast with seaside areas which are crowded. Even the cities and towns nearby those areas are all densely populated. Generally, Greece is not a densely populated country due to the morphology of its land. Holidays in Greece Popularity: 3%

Ancient Greece Geography
The geography of ancient Greece actually relates to the lands traversed by the nomadic Stone Age man. It was only later, when the hunters and farmers settled down to establish civilizations that the terrain was further defined by the Minoan and Mycenaean kings...
Enlarge Image The ancient Greek civilization continues to have an enormous impact on the world, even today. The terrain marked and consistently demarcated by wars and invasions was unique in its topography and cultural diversity. The invasion of what the world knew as the 'jewel of the Mediterranean' was roughly defined by the Dorians. They invaded the region in 1100 BC, from the north and extended the territory along the west coast.
Ancient Greece Geography
Way back then, the geographical extent of Greece was defined according to its location in the Balkan Peninsula. The Greek islands lay to the southeastern corner of Europe and were segregated into two peninsulas, Peloponnesus and Attica. Athens , the capital, was located in the peninsula of Attica, while Sparta, a very famous city-state was within the Peloponnesus peninsula. In ancient times, Greece comprised mountainous terrain and a very rugged coastline. This added to the strategic importance of the place, since it offered the citizens good protection from foreign invaders. However, this very aspect of ancient Greece geography also made it quite difficult for communication and trade.

Greece - Geography
1 Greece is a wonderful country. It is full of many interesting places. Many are very old and very big. Some of Greece's most interesting places are huge old buildings. They were built thousands of years ago.
2 Greece is a peninsula. It is in southern Europe. What is a peninsula? A peninsula is a part of land that has water on three sides. The Aegean, Mediterranean, Ionian Seas surround Greece. Many islands are part of Greece. Try to imagine this: There are 1,400 islands around Greece! Some are big, like Peloponnesus. Many islands are tiny.
3 There are many mountains in Greece. Mount Olympus is one of them. This mountain is very important. Greeks thought that mount Olympus was the home for the gods. They believed there were many gods. They also believed that there was a king of all the gods. His name was Zeus.
4 One of Greece's hills is also very famous. It is called the Acropolis. The Acropolis is in Athens. Athens is one of Greece's largest cities. The Greeks built a huge building on top of the Acropolis. It was called the Parthenon. The Parthenon was a temple, which was a place for people to worship gods.
5 The Parthenon was built out of heavy stones. It has huge columns. The columns support a huge roof. It was built for the goddess Athena. A lot of the Parthenon has fallen down. Some of the building is still standing. You can still see part of it. There are also many other very old buildings and temples in Greece.
