    A HISTORY OF GREECE
    History of Greece
The word Greek , according to Aristotle, comes from the word Graikoi which was the pre-historic name of the Hellenes . The people who we call the Greeks , and live in a country we call Greece , actually call themselves Hellenes and live in a country called Hellas . This is their story. This page started as an historical overview for my Greece Travel Guides and not meant to be a detailed account of Greek history though there are some areas where my interest in a topic enabled me to go into more detail. For those of you who want to know more about Greece and what makes it such a unique and fascinating country this should serve as an introduction. You can click on most photos in my history to see them full size. To return to this index page you can click on the History of Greece link at the top and the bottom of each page.

    Greece History
Greece (and the Greek Islands) is a country with a particularly rich history and famous personalities
Excavations show that the first settlement dates from the Palaeolithic era (11,000-3,000 BC). During the second millennium BC, Greece gave birth to the great civilization of the Minoans (2600-1500 BC), the Mycenaeans (1500-1150 BC) and the Cycladic civilization.
The Classical Period of the Greek history (6th-4th centuries BC) is the most famous worldwide. The peak of the classical period is the 5th century BC, when the foundations of western civilization were put in Athens. This city-state became the greatest naval power of Greece that time and developed all domains of culture, including philosophy, music, drama, rhetorics and a new regime, democracy.
Then, the history of Greece is a succession of various invasions and dominations. In 334 BC, Alexander the Great invaded the Persian Empire and his army conquered all the way till India. However, in 323 BC, the great general dies in Babylon and his Macedonian empire is torn apart and governed by his heirs. In 168 BC onwards, the Romans conquer Greece and a new period starts for the Greek history.

    Ancient Greek History
One of the great civilizations in the world during the 4th and 3d millennium BC was the Minoan culture of Crete . The Minoan culture is divided in three periods: old, middle and late. The old period was synchronized with the Old Kingdom of Egypt. There were connections between the two cultures through trade, and these influences can be found in the art in both Crete and Egypt. During the middle period, about 1900 BC, the great palaces of Knossos and Phaestos were built. There are debates whether these buildings were housing kings or priests, but it is thought there was a religious association to them. The Great Goddess, perhaps called Rhea was worshipped, and her priests and priestesses had the highest position in the society. During the second millennium BC a series of natural catastrophies plagued the Minoan civilization. At 1700 BC there was a terrible earthquake that destroyed the old palaces, and a second one occurred at about 1450 BC destroying most of the buildings of that time. The Volcano at Thira ( Santorini ) erupted at this time, causing half the island to sink.

    Athens 101: Athens Greece History
Athens in Greece has a history dating back to antiquity. Several path breaking ideas and concepts were born and developed in Athens in Greece. History of Athens, Greece is not just for the Greeks to take pride in, it is a legacy for the whole world to cherish and savor. Athens and Greece have evolved together as conjoined entities and Athens which started life as hill-top fortification grew to become the greatest of all city-states in ancient Greece. Athenian civilization reached its zenith after the city-state won the Persian Wars in the 5th century B.C. Till date; military historians study Athenian tactics in the battles of Marathon and Salamis. Victory in the Persian Wars made Athens the leading Greek city ahead of Sparta. This golden age marks the apogee of imperial and cultural achievements for Athens. This was the age of Themistocles, Aeschylus, Sophocles and many more luminaries. The decline of Athens as a Greek power began with the Peloponnesian War which the city fought with Sparta. The end of the war was a low point for Athens, Greece. History tells us that the city’s population was reduced by half and its once proud naval fleet was left with only a dozen ships standing. Modern Athens became the capital of the newly independent Greece in 1834; thereby continuing its centuries old bond with the region known as Greece. Today one witnesses an Athens in which the Greece of history can still be experienced through the various monuments left behind by the ages. The Acropolis, Parthenon, temple of Nike, ancient stadiums, etc remind us of the power that Athens once was and the influences such as Spartan, Roman, Egyptian, and Turkish, which it has borne through the ages.

By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Greek legend tells that the Aegean Sea was named after the king of Athens, Aegeus. His son Theseus was one of the great heroes of ancient Greece. He was going to fight the Minotaur, a monster of Crete that had the body of a man and the head of a bull. Theseus promised his father, Aegeus, that on the way home he would replace the black sail on his ship with the white one if the journey were successful. But he forgot his promise; Aegeus saw the black sail far out in the sea and threw himself off a cliff.
Washed by the waters of three seasthe Aegean, Ionian, and MediterraneanGreece was a crossroads for different cultures. Its history began on the island of Crete about 6,000 years ago. Major seaways, power, religion, and law were the basis for Crete's developed commerce and trade. At the heart of that civilization was a huge palace at Knossosa city in ancient Crete. Knossos was the capital of the legendary King Minos. This civilization of Crete is also called the Minoan civilization because of him.
The history and culture of ancient Greece is closely tied to the seas and natural forces. Around 1,500 BC, a terrible earthquake happened not far from Crete and destroyed much of the island. Scientists supposed that was one the main causes of the end of the great Crete civilization. It was not completely gone, though. Art, culture, and traditions of Crete had a very strong influence on those of mainland Greece.

After the decline of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, Otto of Bavaria was installed as king (helped by European powers), followed by George I of Denmark in 1862.
During WW1 Greece sided with the Entente powers against Turkey and the other Central Powers which led to the victorious powers awarding parts of Asia Minor to Greece after the war. Several conflicts between Turkey and Greece boiled over in the years after with territorial battles between them spilling over into the Greco-Turkish War of 1919 - 1922 (also known as the War in Asia Minor). The outcome of this was to establish a Turkish state and return Greece to it's pre-WW1 borders.
During WW2, despite heavy resistance the country fell to Germany in 1941 after which many people fled for Australia, Canada and the United States. Even after liberation, Greece and its people suffered further with the outbreak of a bitter civil war between communist insurgents and the right-wing government forces which continued until 1949.
The Greek economy recovered rapidly after the war with the aide of the US's Marshall Plan loans and later through the emergence of the tourist industry.
