General Information about Santorini Island Greece Amorgos Andros Antiparos Ios ... Tinos SANTORINI HISTORY
Santorini was formed by a series of volcanic eruptions which affected the whole Aegean, all the way to Crete. Originally, the island was named Kallisti (the beautiful one) and Strogyli (the round one). Many people inhabited the island, starting from the Pre-Hellenes, then the Phoenicians and the Dorians, who named the island Thira, after their King Thiras. During the 16th century BC, the Minoans settled on the island, which became an important center of the Minoan civilization.
Around 1550 - 1500 B.C. a violent volcanic explosion caused the submergence of the central part of Santorini, creating a huge basin of 83 square miles, called the Caldera. During the Persian Wars, the island sided with the Athenian Alliance. Later Santorini came under the rule of Sparta.
In the Byzantine Era and under the rule of Constantinople, Santorini adopted the Christian faith and appointed its own bishop and organized its Christian church. In 1204 AD, after the Fall of Constantinople, the Venetians took over the island and it was during this time that the island was named Santorini, after Santa Irini. In 1207, Santorini was handed over to the Duke of Naxos and although it was taken by the Greeks for a short while, it remained under Venetian Rule until 1579, when the island came under Ottoman Rule. It had relative autonomy during this period, to the point that Santorini had an elected delegate who represented the Santorinians before the Turkish Authorities. The island finally gained its independence in 1821 and joined the Greek Republic in 1830 with the signing of the London Protocol.

Introduction to the Greek History
The first evidence of human life in Greece dates back to the Palaeolithic period between 120,000-10,000 B.C. However, it was not until the Neolithic period dated approximately 7,000 - 3,000 B.C. that Greek civilisation grew and flourished. Many remains of settlements and burial chambers of this period have been discovered in Thessaly, Macedonia and the Peloponnese. The first urban centres appeared during the Bronze Age (3,000-1100 B.C.) Evidence of these have been found all over modern day Greece, for example, in some North Eastern Aegean islands, the Cycladic islands, Crete and the Greek mainland.
During the Minoan period in Crete (approximately, 2nd millennium B.C.) a more sophisticated, organised society developed with a culture specific to that region. The first scripts were invented and communication opened up between the Minoans and people from the East Mediterranean countries. This led to an exchange of culture and ideas which became not only established as part of Minoan culture but spread to influence cultures, religion and government all over the Aegean islands and mainland Greece. During this time Crete became the main exporter of jewellery, skilled craftworks, oil and wine as well as importers of food and raw materials. It was during this time in Crete that the first major mercentile navy was developed.

The Archaic Age - Athens
The actual history of Athens, or Kekropia as it was then known after the King Kekropos, who had the body of a snake, begins at around 3000 BC. On top of the Acropolis, a huge hill standing some 150 meters above sea-level and measuring around 330 meters in length was the place where Athens began. With attacks from other parties a very real possibility, it made sense that Athens should be situated at the very top of the Acropolis where it was very easy to defend against outside attack. Though as previously mentioned the history of Athens started at around 3000 BC, it was in fact inhabited at around 8000 BC by the Pelasgians. These original inhabitants are credited with the building of the oldest walls around the rock of the Acropolis. They are known today as either the Pegasgian or Cyclopean walls. Many other ancient temples are also credited to them. As well as King Kekropos being credited to the introduction of monogamy and the ritual of buring the dead, he was also present in the Council of the Twelve Gods of Olympus, when Poseidon and Athens were staking their claim to Attica. Mythology tells us that Poseidon struck the rock of the Acropolis with his trident and a horse leapt out from that point along with a stream of rushing water.

History in Greece
Edit This The Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire began in 1821 and concluded with the winning of independence in 1830. With the support of England France and Russia a monarchy was established. A Bavarian prince Otto was named king in 1833. He was deposed 30 years later and the Great Powers chose a prince of the Danish House of Glucksberg as his successor. He became George I King of the Hellenes. The Megali Idea (Great Idea) a vision of uniting all Greeks of the declining Ottoman Empire within the newly independent Greek State exerted strong influence on the early Greek state. At independence Greece had an area of 47 515 square kilometers (18 346 square mi.) and its northern boundary extended from the Gulf of Volos to the Gulf of Arta. The Ionian Islands were added in 1864; Thessaly and part of Epirus in 1881; Macedonia Crete Epirus and the Aegean Islands in 1913; Western Thrace in 1918; and the Dodecanese Islands in 1947. Greek politics particularly between the two world wars involved a struggle for power between monarchists and republicans. Greece was proclaimed a republic in 1924 but George II returned to the throne in 1935 and a plebiscite in 1946 upheld the monarchy. It was finally abolished however by referendum on December 8 1974 when more than two-thirds of the voters supported the establishment of a republic.

The Aegean civilization had several phases, two of the most important being the Minoan civilization and the Mycenaean civilization . These cultures had disappeared by 1100 B.C. The Greek-speaking Achaeans migrated into the Peloponnesus during the 14th and 13th cent. B.C.

People of Greece Greece is made up of ethnic Greeks who accounts for more than 95 percent of the population. Besides this, there is a significant Turkish minority in western Thrace. Other minorities include Albanians, Roma (Gypsies), Pomaks (Muslim Slavs), Armenians, Macedonian Slavs, and Vlachs. The first language is Modern Greek, which uses the same alphabet that was used for the Greek language spoken in ancient times. Arts, Culture and Music of Greece Greek dances include traditional dances such as the hasapiko , the tsamiko , and the kalamatiano that are usually performed at weddings and other celebrations. The refugees from cities of the Ottoman Empire brought with them songs of the urban working class, which had a considerable influence on the development of contemporary Greek popular music, including bouzouki (a Greek stringed instrument) music. Composers such as Manos Khatzidakis and Mikis Theodorakis have done much to popularize Greek music for a wider international audience. Flag of Greece The flag of Greece consists of horizontal stripes of blue and white placed at equal intervals and they are 9 in number. These 9 strips represent the 9 syllables of the phrase which reads as follows: "eea ? Tat" this phrase means Freedom or Death.

Greece History
According to historical evidences and archaeological excavations, Greece history commences with the Stone Age Civilization. Settlements in Greece began from The Palaeolithic Age that covers between 11.000 BC to 3.000 BC. Thereafter, the civilizations of Greece began to acquire more complex structure with the formation of larger villages and new forms of social organisation. Approximately during 3.000 BC, the art of metal work emerged in Greece and this marked the beginning of The Bronze Age. The second millennium B.C saw the birth of some glorious Greek civilizations like Minoan Civilization on Crete Islands, the Mycenean Civilization on the Mainland with the Cycladic Civilization flourishing on the island of Centre Aegean.
During the 12th century BC, the Dorians descending from the North, massacred the Mycenean people, disintegrating the entire control system. With this began The Dark Age and The Bronze Age civilizations came to an abrupt end. From about 1000 BC, the Greeks again started to reconstruct their civilizations and this marked the beginning of the Archaic Period. The Classical Period that followed the Archaic Period is unanimously considered to be the Golden Age of Greece history. This period is particularly remembered as the time when some of best mathematicians and philosophers of Greece lived. It was also during The Classical Period that democracy as a form of government came into being.

The Greek War of freedom began in 1821 and concluded in 1830 when England, France, and Russia forced the Ottoman Empire to grant Greece its freedom under a European monarch, Bavarian prince Otto. He was deposed 30 years later, and the Great Powers chose a prince of the Danish House of Glucksberg as his successor. He became George I, King of the Hellenes. Greece became a member of NATO in 1952. From 1952 to late 1963, Greece was governed by conservative partiesthe Greek Rally of Marshal Alexandros Papagos and its successor, the National Radical Union (ERE) of Constantine Karamanlis. In 1963, the Center Union Party of George Papandreou was elected and governed until July 1965. It was followed by a succession of unstable coalition governments. On January 17, 1996, following a protracted illness, Prime Minister Papandreou resigned and was replaced as Prime Minister by former Minister of Industry Constantine Simitis. In elections held in September 1996, Constantine Simitis was elected Prime Minister. In April 2000, Simitis and PASOK won again by a narrow margin, gaining 158 seats to ND's 125.
