Greek economy is the twenty seventh largest in the world. It is the second most visited tourist destination in Europe. Greece has an extensive and well known history feeding this popularity. There are millions of visitors each month exploring both the modern and remains of the ancient Greece civilization. Unfortunately, United States’ financial problems are affecting Greece economy. As a result, Greece Gross Domestic Product declined. Like most countries Greece is currently in a recession however, according to economic forecasters, Greece's economy is heading for an even stronger recession in to 2010.
According to financial analysis, in 2008 Central Florida had a difficult time recovering from financial distress to their tourism. Unfortunately, Greece is facing a similar situation in 2010. Its budget deficit is 12 percent of its Gross Domestic Products and expected to rise to 30.5 Euros next year.

Info about tourism in Greece

Greece mainland and the Greek islands are one of the favorite holiday destinations in Europe. In fact, Greece comes in the 15th place in the world rating of tourist destinations, since, according to the National Statistical Service of Greece, it receives more than 15 million tourists every year, after countries such as the USA, China, Spain and Great Britain.
Most tourists come to Greece from Europe, especially the EU countries, and from the USA, while fewer originate from the other continents. In 1989 and 1991, approximately 90% of the tourists to Greece were Europeans, in particular German and British citizens. Until the mid-1990s, the tourism flow in Greece would not surpass 8 or 9 million; however, 1994 was a determinant year for Greek tourism because more than 10 million people chose Greece and the wonderful Greek islands to spend their summer vacations. These Greek islands form, one by one, a beauty of nature. They are the most popular Greek destinations, especially in summer. Big or tiny, green or infertile, ideal for cosmopolitan or relaxing vacations, one thing is for sure: all these islands have the necessary requirements and facilities to offer you memorable vacations!

  • Overview
Lake Prespa, Macedonia, in Northern Greece. Bordering Albania, Macedonia (Former Yugoslav Republic of), Bulgaria and Turkey, Northern Greece is often overlooked by tourists in favor of the country's Mediterranean south and islands. Made up of Epirus, Thrace, Macedonia and Thessaly, this part of the Greek mainland has many cities, natural attractions and cultural heritage spots to explore. Some highlights are its Aegean beaches, Mount Olympus National Park and the cosmopolitan city of Thessaloniki.
    Weather
As to climate, Northern Greece is more similar to the Balkans than to the country's Mediterranean south. Winters are cool and usually have only three to five hours of daylight. Inland temperatures can reach below freezing, especially in mountainous areas. In Thessaloniki, average lows between December and February range in the mid to high 30s. June, July and August see the most sunlight (11 to 12 hours on average), and average highs in the region are in the 80s and 90s. Expect thunderstorms during summer.
    Transportation
Thessaloniki is Northern Greece's regional transport hub. The city's Macedonia International Airport is well connected to other European cities, and EasyJet flies routes from Thessaloniki to London Gatwick, Basel, Milan Malpensa, Berlin and Dortmund. Check for other routes, schedules and fares with Olympic and Aegean. The European budget airline RyanAir serves Volos Airport, 18 miles south of Volos on the Aegean coast in Thessaly. To get around Northern Greece, travel by rail, bus or car. KTEL offers air-conditioned bus service throughout the region.

The prevailing religion of Greece as recognized by the constitution of Greece is the Greek Orthodox. Nevertheless, the country guarantees freedom of religious belief for all its citizens. Ninety-seven percent of the Greek citizens are identified as Greek Orthodox. Majority of these people celebrate the main religious feasts, especially the Greek Orthodox Easter called the Pascha. The government of Greece does not keep record on religious groups and religious affiliations do not take part in the censuses.
The education in Greece is free and is required for children aged between five and fifteen. The study of the English language is enforced from the third grade through high school. The university education, with the inclusion of books is free and is dependent on a students capacity to meet entrance requisites.
There is a high percentage of the population of students that search for higher education. Students registered at Greek universities count to more than one-hundred thousand and fifteen percent of this population holds a university degree. The state-administered examinations determine the admission of a student in a university. One out of four candidates is admitted to Greek universities. document.write(''); Greece Pictures Greece, the cradle of western culture, has long attracted scholars and tourists interested in its classical past; but in recent years it has also been discovered by a wider public who have come to appreciate its many other attractions. The tourists who are now drawn to Greece in such large numbers do not go only to see its ancient sites and recall the contribution it has made to European cultural and intellectual life, but to enjoy the extraordinary beauty of its scenery, the Mediterranean charm of its islands, the ready hospitality of its people and its beautiful beaches - all combining to form a marvelously seductive holiday land.
No other country is so characteristic of the Mediterranean world as Greece. Slender and intricately articulated, surrounded by a multitude of islands of all shapes and sizes, it pulls away from the more solid structure of south-eastern Europe, reaching far out into the sea to Europe's most southerly outpost, the long island of Crete. It is a land of mountains, deeply penetrated by the ubiquitous sea and wrapped in the mantle of a climate which is everywhere the same. Greek land and the Greek seas - the Ionian Sea in the west, the Aegean in the east - are parts of an indivisible whole, one of which cannot be conceived without the other. No part of the Peloponnese or central Greece is much more than 50km/30 miles from the sea, and even in northern Greece the maximum distance from the sea is not much more than 100km/ 60 miles.

Back to Greece Economy As the most internationalized subsector and one of the major industries of the Greek economy, tourism is a strong earner of foreign exchange. The warm climate, the long, scenic Mediterranean coastline, the many significant archaeological and historical sites, the traditional hospitality of Greeks, and improvements in the local infrastructure have increased the number of foreign travelers attracted to Greece. The tourist residence capacity has grown also. Between 1970 and 1990, the number of beds in tourist accommodations increased from 119,000 to 438,000. Of this residential capacity, 84 percent is located in hotels, of which Greece had 4,659 in 1992. However, the share of motels, furnished apartments, and guest houses has been increasing over the last decade. Tourist visits followed a moderate growth trend in the 1980s. In the last two decades, Greece's traditional competitors, Spain and Portugal, have been joined by Turkey and the other Balkan countries with beaches on the Adriatic and Black seas. Total nights spent by foreigners in Greece were 30.6 million in 1981 and rose to 34.5 million in 1989. Since the mid-1980s, tourist arrivals have generally fluctuated between 8 million and 9 million persons per year, but by 1994 this number exceeded 10 million. Despite long efforts by Greek governments to extend the tourist season throughout the year, Greek tourism remains concentrated in the summer months. In 1990-91, for example, three-quarters of tourist arrivals took place in the five-month period between May and September.
