Greece Culture: Information about the culture of Greece and the Greek Islands
Greece is a country of a great interests and diverse cultures, influenced by its location, at the junction between the East and the West and by the many occupations endured by the Greek people throughout history.
In general, the Greeks are particularly proud of their culture and speak of their country with an intense passion, feeling that their Greek culture is a definition of their national and ethnic belonging. Traditions, religion, music, language, food and wines are the major composites of the Greece culture and constitute the base for those who wish to visit the country. Links Home About Greece Destinations in Greece Greece Pictures ... Greece Forums
Traditions in Greece and Greek Islands are either of a religious character or coming from paganism. Furthermore, most of the traditions and festivals still followed and celebrated today are religious. That is why so many panygiria are organized in the country, which are actually religious celebrations of saints followed by traditional music and dance in the square of the village.
Many Greeks are very superstitious people and believe a lot in religion as well as in supernatural or paranormal phenomenon. This impresses many visitors who travel in Greece. For example, some people believe it is bad luck to see a black car, it is 7 years bad luck to break a glass or mirror, while others knock their fingers against wood if they have a bad thought.

    Island of Crete
Crete is the biggest island in Greece and the second biggest (after Cyprus) of the East Mediterranean. It lies at the Southern Aegean Sea and at the crossroads of three continents Europe, Asia and Africa. Crete covers an area of 8.336 sq.km. The length of the island is 260 km, but the shore-length is 1.046 km A high mountain range crosses the island from West to East, formed by three different groups of mountains. To the West the White Mountains (2.453 m), in the middle the mountain of Idi (Psiloritis-2.456 m) and to the East the mountain of Dikti (2.148 m). These mountains gifted Crete with fertile plateaus like Lassithi, Omalos and Nida, caves like Diktaion and Idaion cave, and gorges like the famous Gorge of Samaria. There are also quite a few valleys and small plains. The largest and most important plain is that of Messara located between Psiloritis and Asterousia mountains at the centre - south of the island. Steeped in Homeric history and culture, scented by wild fennel and basil, Crete spoils visitors with its wealth of myths, legends and history, a blessed and dramatic landscape, an extraordinary fusion of past and present, and an abundance of choices and experiences.

Most of Greece has a mild climate. Summers are warm and dry, particularly in the southern coastal areas. Rain is heavy during the winter months, with some mountain areas getting snow.
    Communications
Adequate and modern communication networks reach all areas. Mobile phone network coverage in general is good in most parts of the country. The main operators are Vodafone, Cosmote and Telestet. You can purchase locally inexpensive phone cards for international calls and sim cards which will enable you to use your mobile phone locally. There are also many internet cafes in Athens and on most tourist destinations and Greek islands.
    Culture
The majority of people in Greece are of Greek heritage with small populations of Turks, Bulgarians and other Europeans. Although more than half the population is classified as urban, rural life retains a powerful influence. A strong sense of community and family ties prevail even in the busiest of metropolitan centres.
    Customs
You may plan to visit some churches or monasteries during your stay in Greece. As a sign of respect men and women should dress conservatively when visiting these places. In some monasteries it is not appropriate to expose bare arms or entry is not allowed to men or women wearing shorts.

    Masticulture of Chios
How would you like to take home a piece of the Greek isle of Chios? You can do so by experiencing first hand the daily life of the island : participate in the cultivation of mastic trees, press grapes, collect olives, harvest wheat and bake your own bread. Grow organic vegetables. Dance like the people of the island of Chios. Eat like the people of the island of Chios. Masticulture organizes activities for people of all ages, for families, for small and large groups alike. Dare to immerse yourself in our culture and you might indeed leave our island with a small piece of it in your heart, if not in your luggage. Where do these activities take place? In Mesta , the liveliest of Chios’ medieval castle villages. Time has stopped here, as though it wants to protect the local traditions. The place where everything starts is the Masticulture office, located in the center of the village. Experience Mesta ! Our unique castle village is a significant part of the island’s scenery, nestled among olive trees, grape vines, fields of wheat and, naturally, groves of mastic trees. Experience the hospitable people, the excellent food, the local products. Live in one of various rooms ranging from simple traditional accommodations to modern luxurious suites. Mesta is a family paradise. Children may play and roam around freely in the exclusively pedestrian paths of the village while parents enjoy the Greek cuisine worry free at one of the village’s tavernas or cafes. The only likely danger is the donkeys, the village’s sole means of transportation in the winding narrow paths of the village.

An Archeological Site Sometimes Referred to as the "Minoan Pompeii"
As in Pompeii, the volcanic covering of the archeological site at Akrotiri on Santorini , has kept an ancient settlement from disintegrating over time. The site was found by accident when the Suez Canal was being constructed in 1860. Workers quarrying Santorini's volcanic ash discovered the ruins, but serious excavations at the site didn't begin until 1967. An unfortunate collapse of the roof in 2005, which killed a British tourist, caused the site to be closed. It's scheduled to be reopened sometime after 2010. Greek bureaucracy has brought the repairs of the building to a halt, which has caused Santorini's tourist industry to suffer.
Akrotiri is referred to by some as the "Minoan Pompeii" because of the similarities of the destruction by volcano and the advanced forms of architecture and plumbing. It's one of the most important prehistoric settlements in the Aegean Sea. By analyzing the different items found in the ruins, archeologists were able to pinpoint which countries traded in the port at Akrotiri up until it was covered by lava around 1450 BCE.
