These myths document aspects of the ancient Greek religion and provide one of the earliest bases of literature. Though most accounts were passed down through the oral-tradition, Greek mythology as it is understood today derives from the written works of such authors as the Greek writer Hesiod, the Roman poet Ovid, the Greek playwright Sophocles, and the Greek poet(s) Homer. Such creatures as the cyclops, satyrs, and centaurs have their origins in Greek myth. This mythology has been used as a source of humor in several Muppet productions, and as a basis for more serious adaptations in

This corpus of material includes a large collection of narratives, some of which explain the origins of the world, and others that detail the lives and adventures of a wide variety of gods, goddesses, heroes, heroines, and other mythological creatures . These accounts were initially fashioned and disseminated in an oral-poetic tradition, though they are known today primarily through written Greek literature. Greek mythology has exercised an extensive and profound influence on the culture, arts and literature of Western civilization. Indeed, Greek mythological themes have remained continually relevant throughout western literary history. Though the ancient Greek religions based upon these tales have long since faded into obscurity, Greek myths remain the archetypal sources for much of Western

Greek mythology is taught at biology classes at Greek schools where it has achieved a status of a serious alternative explanation as opposed to the theory of evolution created by Darwin in the 19th century. The main points of the Greek mythology theory are:
  • The world is too chaotic to have come to being through the evolutionary process. How do dumbass dinosaurs evolve into something as sophisticated as pigs and amoebas? I mean come on! The world is too chaotic to be created and ruled by a single deity. There is no hell or heaven . Instead, dead people go to the Underworld ruled by Hades . These accounts were initially fashioned and disseminated in an oral-poetic tradition; our surviving sources of Greek mythology are literary reworkings of this oral tradition. Greek mythology was also reflected in artifacts, some of them works of art, notably the repertory of vase-painters. The Greeks themselves referred to the myths and associated artworks to throw light on cult practices and ritual traditions that were already ancient and, at times, poorly understood.

In the wide variety of legends and stories that constitute ancient Greek mythology, the deities that were native to the Greek peoples are described as having essentially human but ideal bodies. Although each god's physical appearance is distinct, they have the power to take on whatever form they choose. The few composite or chimerical beings that occur, such as the Sphinx, had their origins in Anatolia or the Near East and were imported into the Greek culture.

The Theoi Project profiles each deity and creature of Greek Mythology on a separate page, incorporating an encyclopedia summary, quotations from a wide selection of ancient Greek and Roman texts, and illustrations from ancient art. Analysis of the texts and interpretation of the stories of myth is currently beyond the scope of the project. For such detailed analysis, I would suggest consulting some of the good books available on the subject. Transliterated forms of Greek names are used throughout the biography pages of the site rather than their Latin forms, e.g. Kirke instead of Circe, Ouranos for Uranus, Apollon in place of Apollo, etc. The index and introduction pages, however, use the Latin name-forms for ease of reference.
