Story-telling was one of the major features of Greenland culture. Writing was introduced in 18th century and the South Greenland Printing Press was established in 1857. Since 1857 Literature gained importance in Greenland. Greenland Literature is written in Greenlandic as well as Danish.
Greenlandic language is divided into three dialects such as East Greenland, West Greenland and Eskimo dialect. There are various sub dialects. Language is of great importance to the Greenlandic people, which is clearly visible from their culture. Despite considerable negative pressure the integrity of the language is maintained by them. Moreover 98% of the population is literate.

QAQORTOQ - JULIANEHÅB (GREENLAND)
With about 3.500 inhabitants, Qaqortoq (Julianehåb in Danish) is the largest town in southern Greenland. There are boat and helicopter connections to other towns and villages, though travelling in Greenland requires thorough economic and practical planning. The climate is sub-arctic, with an average summer temperature of +10 C. Good outdoors clothes are a necessity, but there are well-stocked shops, where you can get most things you need, except artists' materials. Qaqortoq also has a restaurant, an inn and a hotel, and a bank. The local currency is the Danish krone. The main languages are Greenlandic and Danish. English is spoken to some extent.
The two artists' accommodations are located on the ground floor of the South Greenland Culture Centre, which is about 1.5 km from the centre of Qaqortoq. One flat is about 35.5 m2 with toilet, bath and kitchenette, and the other 11.5 m2 with kitchenette (toilet and bath in the hall). Both flats are furnished and include linen and cooking utensils. Artists in the larger flat may, when necessary, be accompanied by a family member. The visiting artist has the right to use the studio and workshop of the Culture Centre, and its other facilities by special agreement.
A telephone (+299 642511) can be installed at an extra charge (in the smaller flat only).

Throughout his life, Greenland's most famous ethnographer and explorer, Knud Rasmussen, praised Greenland's original Inuit residents for their strength, daring, and intelligence. In fact, Rasmussen won international fame by copying the Inuit peoples' ingenious hunting and survival skills on his many trips mapping and exploring the arctic north. In his 1908 book on the people and cultures of the arctic called "The People of the Polar North," Rasmussen wrote, "On this mighty stretch of coast of more than 10,000 kilometers, where they bridged points as far apart as the East [sic] of Greenland and Alaska, the Aleutic Isles and Siberia, they have understood, as no other hunting people, the art of self-preservation, and in the midst of a merciless fight for existence they have created a culture which compels the greatest admiration of all white men." Contemporary Greenlandic society evolved after more than two centuries of Danish colonialism and more than 4,500 years of Inuit colonization of the ice-bound island. Despite a very strong European influence, mostly from Denmark, Greenlanders share a common cultural affinity with the Inuit residents in Alaska, Siberia, and Canada who Rasmussen knew so well. Modern-day Greenlanders are extremely proud of that legacy. (See the Greenland map , courtesy of the University of Texas library system.)
