The culture in Grenada is as spicy as its exports
...And Everything Nice Grenada may not be well-known around the world, but it's had plenty of time to develop a personality of its own. Beginning with music and Carnival, Grenada's culture is a well-developed adventure in the arts.
Spoken Words
There are many linguistic nuances in Grenada, mostly due to its history. Though English is the main language, traces of French and African languages can still be heard. Folklore has also been an important spoken tradition in Grenada. The tradition of telling folk stories is alive and well here, particularly on the island of Carriacou. Three of the most popular characters from these tales testify to the many cultures that have combined on these islands: Anancy, a West African spider, trickster-god; La Diablesse, the devil-woman; and Ligaroo, from the French Loupgaroux, meaning werewolf.
Festive Occasions
The traditional Caribbean cultural celebration of Carnival is a very important festival on Grenada. Several other festivals are also important, including the celebration of the nation's independence from Britain and a national dance festival. Festival Description Carnival Unlike many other Caribbean locales, Grenada has two Carnivals. The first is on Carriacou in February, and the second is on Grenada in July or August. These two cultural events are known for their bright colors, costumes, and general festivities, including the naming of many Carnival dignitaries.

About Grenada Grenada in Depth History Culture ... Attractions
Grenada Culture
Grenadian culture is a mixture of British, African, West Indian and French influences. Though the majority of Grenadians are Roman Catholic and a French-African patois is spoken by some, the French influence on this small nation is slight compared to other neighboring islands that have oscillated between the main Caribbean colonial powers. The official language is English, and though the majority are Roman Catholic, there are plenty of Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian churches. African Creole influences come to the fore during Carnival, and a general resurgence of black pride is visible in the widespread practice of giving African names to Grenadian children. Carriacou has a unique folk troupe that performs the African-influenced Big Drum Dance, centered around the playing of drums made of small rum kegs covered with goatskin. On Grenada, steel band and calypso music are popular. The folk art of Carriacou artist Canute Caliste has gained international recognition painting visions of mermaids and sailing vessels at his home in L'Esterre. The popularity of steel hulls has made it difficult to see traditional wooden schooners being built on Carriacou. The island was already inhabited by the Carib Indians, who had migrated from the South American mainland, killing or enslaving the peaceful Arawaks who where already inhabiting the island. The Amerindians called their island Camerhogue, but Columbus renamed the island Concepcion. However, passing Spanish sailors found its lush green hills so evocative of Andalusia that they rejected this name in favor of Granada. Christopher Columbus discovered Grenada in 1498. The French then called it La Grenade, and the British followed suit, changing Grenade to Grenada (pronounced Gre-nay-da). Agressive defence of the island by the Caribs prevented settlement by Europeans until the 17th century. In 1609 some Englishmen tried and failed, followed by a group of Frenchmen in 1638, but it was not until 1650 that a French expedition from Martinique landed and made initial friendly contact with the inhabitants. The French struggled unsuccessfully to keep the island from falling into the hands of the British for the next ninety years. Fort George and Fort Frederick, which still command the heights overlooking St. George's harbour, are relics of that fight. Having gained stable possession of Grenada, the British immediately imported large numbers of slaves from Africa and established sugar plantations.

Victoria Bus ... CLICK TO BUY Introducing one of Grenada's creative Rhapso artists - HUDSON GEORGE. Born and raised in Hermitage, St Patrick's, Grenada, Hudson currently resides in Toronto, Canada. He had an early exposure to music through his father who was a Guitarist. His father in turn had learned the instrument in his teen years, and was a music teacher to many. From a very early age, Hudson learned to play with words, rather than the guitar as his father did. He started writing poems and has continued writing to this day. Hudson believesthat there is power in the word through riddim and verse, so he started doing poetry readings in Toronto, with other black and Caribbean people. This CD title "Everybody Looking For Something" is his second. The music and words represents his Grenadian / Caribbean culture and experience. The artist's main focus is on using traditional music with bass and blending with the word. Because the Rhapso artform is so dependent on its lyrical contents, artists that choose this form of expression are obligated to read and research constantly in order to maintin interest and appeal. Hudson finds that to be not an obligation but a joy!

The islands' turbulent past means that every aspect of life is shaped by a fusion of influences, from West African and Latin American to American, British and French. In the old British colonies like Barbados, Anglican churches, Georgian architecture and cricket co-exist with calypso music, whilst in the French Antilles like Martinique, French-Creole cuisine and Napeolonic statues rub shoulders with steel bands. In the Dutch Antilles like Aruba, gabled houses and traditional Dutch foods combine with a strong West African culture and a typically Caribbean love of Carnival.
    Religion
Generally speaking, the former British colonies are Protestant, whilst the French, Dutch and Spanish islands are Roman Catholic. Many islands also have thriving Rastafarian communities.
    History
Named after the Carib Indians who first inhabited them, everything changed for the Caribbean when Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492. After that, Spanish influence reigned supreme until, in the 1600s, the sugar trade drew in Britain, France and Holland, who shipped millions of West Africans to the archipelago as slave labour for their sugar cane plantations. Spanish influence quickly declined as a result and the islands were increasingly fought over by the occupying colonial powers. By 1850, slavery was abolished and many islands were governed by the US, British and French, until achieving independence in the mid 1900s. Some smaller islands chose to remain as British Colonies, part of the British Commonwealth or as French or Dutch territories.

My Music Mr. Elwyn McQuilkin, known as the Wizard, was born in La Digue, a small village in the Eastern parish of Grenada; the same village where the mother of Malcolm X was born. It was while attending SAASS during his graduating year in 1971, that he won his first calypso title. But it was during his membership of Shadows Youth Club he started to sing calypsos seriously He first made it to the "big Yard" in 1976 with the selections "Mr. West Indian" and "Ole Time carnival". He was second runner up to Flying Turkey. He went off the scene for three years, due to studies he undertook in Guyana. In 1980, he returned with "Struggle" and "Tomorrow’s people", placing second to Survivor. Although he did not win the top prize, he was recognized that night. Williams Munro, a Trinidadian businessman, contacted Wizard to do an album and to sing in his kingdom of the Wizards calypso tent. With his album "Making Music" he took Trinidad by storm. Grenadians in Trinidad were proud of a son of the Spice Island Black Wizard.
