Guatemala Culture - More than Mayans and Mountains
Perhaps when you think of Guatemala culture, you think of Mayans and mountains, but there is much more to Guatemala than that. We have low and wet places, high and dry places, rich art, literature, and musical traditions, and immigrants from all over the world. Let me give you an example: A few years back when I first came to Guatemala to study Mam, I came by land from Texas by bus. That's a long story for another time, but as we were winding down through the mountains from Chiapas, I was awestruck by the beautiful scenery. We were winding through mountains that I would have been terrified to drive through, and from my window on the bus, I could see alllll the way down. You can imagine, most of my thoughts were occupied with, "I sure hope this driver knows what he's doing!" I made it to Huehuetenango and the next day went out to catch another chicken bus to Todos Santos. The sheer variety of people milling about was amazing! There were African-descendant Garifuna, men in funny red-and-white striped pants, and others running around in "normal" clothes. What was a gringo to think? As we wound through the mountains to Todos Santos, I saw beautiful mountains, breathtaking views, and a wide spectrum of dwellings from what can only be called huts to three-story houses built by families of men who'd gone to work in the United States and had sent money back.

    GUATEMALA - CULTURE
Flag of Guatemala Flag Description: There are three equal vertical bands of light blue (hoist side), white, and light blue with the coat of arms centered in the white band. The coat of arms includes a green and red quetzal (the national bird) and a scroll bearing the inscription LIBERTAD 15 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 1821 (the original date of independence from Spain) all superimposed on a pair of crossed rifles and a pair of crossed swords and framed by a wreath. Holidays For nine evenings before Christmas, the beat of drums and the explosion of fireworks are heard as posada ("inn") processions move through the streets. The celebration of Midnight Mass and a large supper follow the last posada on Christmas Eve. Christmas trees first became popular in Guatemala following German immigration to the Alta Verapaz region of the country during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the arrival of Americans working for the local banana industry during the early 20th century. Children find gifts left by the Christ Child under the tree on Christmas morning (possibly a custom based on the German Christkindl tradition). Adults exchange gifts New Year's Day. Tamales made with pork or chicken are the most popular Christmas dish in Guatemala (one Guatemalan website on the Internet claims, in fact, that "a Christmas without tamales is not Christmas"). Guatemalans also enjoy different punch drinks with ingredients such as dried fruit, raisins, prunes, dates, cinnamon, milk, and/or rum.

The nation's society is marked by pronounced extremes in the conduct of daily life. In the capital city families live much as they do in the cosmopolitan centres of Europe, whereas within an hour's drive of the capital are Indians whose patterns of daily life remain those of past centuries. The pattern of culture is characterized by sharp contrasts, whether it be in the language spoken or in matters pertaining to the household, cuisine, attire, or family affairs. The nation's populace is increasingly exposed to the intrusion of foreign determines upon their way of life. All aspects of communicationtimeical news, the comics, soap operas, filmare primarily of foreign origin. New self-confidence: bilingual education for indigenous peoples
The children of Guatemala's indigenous population speak Maya at home. In school, they hardly understand anything they hear, as the language of instruction is Spanish. Bilingual instruction helps them to advance: their basic education improves, and they learn to value their own culture. Guatemala is the only country in the world in which the indigenous population constitutes the majority of the population. Sixty per cent of the 12 million inhabitants are descendants of the Maya, who had a complex written language and a sophisticated astronomy system. These days, most indigenous people have to struggle just to survive. There is little time left for schooling. Children, too, must work to support the family. They place little value on their cultural roots and are convinced that they can only advance in society if they learn Spanish and English. The basic education programme being implemented by GTZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) strengthens the self-confidence and identity of the indigenous population. Education and an awareness of the value of their own culture will give the Maya descendants the confidence they need to seize opportunities and claim their rights, for instance to possession of their lands.

    Lake Izabal and Caribbean Coast
On Guatemala's Caribbean coast visitors will see the country's largest lake, the old Spanish fortress of San Felipe or travel down a lovely jungle river bounded by lush tropical forest to a Garifuna village. Lake Izabal is more than 45 kilometers long and covering about 590 square kilometers. It is surrounded by lush tropical rainforest inhabited by hundreds of bird species, monkeys and many other animals. The waters of the lake are rich in fish. Unique to the lake is the fresh-water sea cow (manatee), a mammal that can weigh up to a ton. This species is in danger of extinction and the manatees are the largest mammals in the country. The old Spanish fortress of San Felipe is found near the town of Frontera, where a bridge spans the the Rio Dulce. This small fortress was built in 1651-2 at the lake's mouth, to keep out marauding pirates. Later it served as a prison and was reconstructed as a historical monument in 1956. The Rio Dulce (sweet river) runs about 40 kilometers from Lake Izabal before it empties into Amatique Bay at Livingston. At its upper end there is the town of Frontera. Downstream, the river widens into an area known as Golfete, before flowing through a narrow, spectacular gorge and then on the bay. Boat tours begin in Frontera or in Livingston.

    History in Guatemala
Edit This The history of Guatemala can be broken down into three well-defined periods: 1.The first period was mostly of Mayan indiginous peoples who then were taken by Conquistadors. 2. The most important period in the history of Guatemala is marked by the arrival of Pedro de Alvarado, conqueror of Guatemala, in 1924. In July of that same year, he founded the first capital of the kingdom of Guatemala at Iximché (presently Tecpán). From there, it was moved to Almolonga (then Ciudad Vieja) in 1527 and to La Antigua Guatemala in 1543. The capital of Guatemala was then the seat of government of the Captaincy General of Guatemala, that stretched from Yucatán to Panama. Agriculture and livestock were the major economic activities and the Captaincy General of Guatemala enjoyed a period of splendor, until its capital was destroyed in 1773 by an earthquake, requiring it to be transferred to Guatemala City, where it has been ever since. 3. The third important period in the history of Guatemala commences with its independence from Spain, on September 15, 1421, when together with other nations of Central America, it became a member of the United Provinces of Central America. Guatemala seceded from this federation in 1839, and was proclaimed a Republic in 1847 a few years after.
